Something that really comes to the fore in this arc is the use of the word "nakama" in the story. This sub of the anime translates it as "friend," and some other versions have translated it as "crewmate." The more mundane, everyday translation is closer to "acquaintance with whom you share circumstances / consequences / a destiny". So the word "nakama" in everyday Japanese can refer to a coworker, or a teammate, or indeed a crewmate: someone who you are connected to and who shares the future successes or failures of that group that connects you. In this context you don't even have to be friends with or like the other person, you just have to have your futures tied together based on hiw you are connected. Among the One Piece fandom, and indeed within the story itself, the word "Nakama" has taken on a very different meaning ... largely due to how Luffy thinks of and treats his friends/crewmates. In the context of One Piece, one's "nakama," in addition to being one's friends and crewmates, are "those who are closer than family," because that is how Luffy views his crewmates: they are his found family and the closest and most dear people to him in the world. So when you see the word "friend" in the subs, listen to if they are saying "nakama" in the Japanese dub, and understand that when Luffy says it (and pretty much everyone else in the series going forward), it has a much deeper meaning than one might think. Also, the One Piece fandom has also taken to calling fellow fans and travelers on the voyage that is this story "nakama" as well. Which, if you think about it, is super wholesome and is, in many ways, indicative of the wider One Piece fandom. Because, while OP fans are indeed rabid about spreading the good word of Goda, they're also one of the least toxic anime fandoms I've experienced.
The adoption of "Nakama" might be my favorite part of the fandom. Like Luffy, simple in definition, but deeper in meaning. Like, I see someone else randomly rocking the One Piece gear on the street? We're Nakama.
A more accurate translation would actually probably be "comrade". It would also make more sense when Arlong calls her his 'nakama' to have had it translate that way because he certainly don't see her as a friend..
I think that, like 'kaizoku' (pirate), the different meaning Luffy invests into 'nakama' comes from growing up around Shanks' crew, seeing what it meant in that context, and thinking that's what it means in general.
He has said "one day i'm gonna unalive him" so many times, that the pirate hunter hunting the pirate king theory almost make sense. Except for it being so dumb.
Aside from his stretchy powers and insane tenacity and loyalty to his friends (whoch is pretty much a staple for all shonen MCs), I think there are 3 main features of Luffy that helps make him an enjoyable and interesting character despite the fact that he only has 2 braincells and both are competing for 3rd place. 1. Sincerity/genuineness: Oda has specifically avoided using any thought bubbles for Luffy, despite using them for several other characters. That is because Luffy doesn't really have a filter between what he thinks and what he says and does. He is 100% exactly what is advertised on the tin. However, even with that he is still a bit hard to read because of #2. 2. Luffy is an avatar of chaos. To be fair, he's probably Chaotic Good most of the time in the D&D alignment chart, but he is in many ways closer to a force of nature wearing a rubber person suit. This adds a sense of unpredictability to what he's going to say or do, or what his perspective is going to be about something. Now, because he is a being of pure Id and pretext is not even a concept he recognizes most of the time, we don't usually have to wait for long to find out what his take on something is. And, because he is incredibly simple and straightforward, we the audience can relatively easily predict around abouts what he's going to do. But his chaotic nature does catch us off-guard and surprises us enough times to keep him interesting while also having us believe that all of that is still within character for him. 3. Luffy's emotional intelligence is off the charts. Yes, Luffy is INCREDIBLY gullible (often played for laughs), but his ability to know when someone is hurting and know exactly what they need is uncanny. His ability to judge people's character, while not perfect and still prone to intentional deception, is scarily accurate. And, further, that emotional intelligence translates into him being an incredibly good leader. And, for a main character who is designed to be the heart of the show and the emotional glue that holds his crew together, that emotional intelligence is FAR more important than book smarts or an astoundingly analytical mind. I mean ... that's why the crew has Nami: she's the holder of the braincells and the one that does the important thinky bits (at least for now).
Heads up, the live action spoils a reveal that you would normally find out when you get to the episodes around 300-ish. Fish men really are much stronger than humans, it's just that the Strawhats really are abnormally strong, especially Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji. I also really love the way Arlong reacted to Zoro's injuries. It really tells you how unusual Zoro is. But my favourite bit in these two episodes definitely is when Luffy tells Arlong that he can beat him, after recounting all the things he CAN'T do (he really is a lousy liar). As for the word "friend". What they really are saying is the word "nakama", which literally means "one of us" or "part of out group". I would say that "part of our crew" is the best translation here. For Luffy, being on the crew is really special, and means more than being a friend, or even family. This will come up a lot, and I think that translating it as "friend" is just not a good choice, especially as Luffy does call other characters "friends" in a normal way (it's a different word, "tomodachi").

The world map isn't a spoiler, it was shown during Gaimon's episode (in the manga anyway) but looking at one may have spoilers for place names, so I'll try to explain it in a way you can picture it. Also a lot of fan maps have the layout wrong. Draw a circle. Now put a red line going diagonally across it, and a blue line going diagonally across it at right angles to that. These are an unseen continent (for where you are) which circles the globe and the Grand Line (very dangerous stretch of ocean which circles the globe). The rest of the world is divided into 4 sections - North Blue at the top, South Blue at the bottom, East Blue and West Blue on the sides. North Blue and West Blue are on the other side of the continent to East Blue and South Blue. Now, the actual layout and borders of the Grand Line is more complex, but the series will explain that in due time.

Heres something I will say about Arlong his got a very valid reason to hate humans. Doesn't make what he does justifyable but you understand the why he does it part.
Major flaw in Arlong's racism is the fact that he and his gang of Fishmen think they are superior from the Grand Line but is in the East Blue: the most peaceful and considered the most weakest oceans in the world (by Hawkeye Mihawk)

Not sure if there were just as an example. think netflix only has upto like 420 or something so i ran out of stuff there to catch up on aside from the movies which i guess arent canon anyway so not sure its worth the time
The comedically dumb protagonist trope is a thing, especially in shonen of that time: Goku(Dragonball), Naruto, Ichigo(Bleach), to name a few... They all come with heart, and grit. Endearing pureness of innocence, and as the villains put it, "too dumb to give up". I think one reason it works and is popular is because of the contrast with our complicated lives that we bog down with excuses. They inspire us to overcome challenges, and stop over worrying about things. They bring back our inner kid, full of dreams and ambition, and show the strength and willpower to pursue them. At least for me anyway.
This is entirely semantic and your point still stands, but, I don't think Ichigo was every presented as being dumb. I'm pretty sure there is a chapter pretty early on in Bleach where they make a joke about test scores and Ichigo was rated surprisingly high in his class, but Uryu was #1.
Fishmen are ten times stronger than humans, even the scrubs but Zoro, Sanji and Luffy are like 50 times stronger than normal humans so yeah they make the fishmen look like idiots. That being said, there's for sure a lot of bravado behind Arlong's claims of superiority. When he sees Zoro's scars his first instinct isn't to downplay him, it's to eliminate him because he immediately knows that Zoro will be stronger than him if he lets him live. That's not the action of someone who fully buys into Fishman's individual superiority.
Arong is more Malcom X than Hitler. Both racist (know virtually nothing of Malcom X besides him being a Black Panther I am pretty sure; feel free to correct me IF I am wrong); but Malcom X was not on the same level as Hitler when it came to the strength of his beliefs of superiority. If someone knows a better figure than Malcom X in this comparison feel free to correct me. Mind Blanked so not able to think of a better comparison right now.
Please tell me your reacting to filler also. It truly bothers me that reactors do not. Its like saying you read a book but not the intro; prologue; epilogue; Authors thoughts. You miss out on the finer details that can be snuck into the extras. The fillers of One Piece especially the ones that show up prior to Sabaody do a lot of foreshadow that most people seem to not recognize as foreshadow. It might be filler but One Piece is Oda's child so you really think it was not ran by him first? Battleship Island arc with Anis in it is a prime example. If you have to ask why and you skipped it then watch it; if you watched it and do not know despite being current on Manga chapters then rewatch it but with a critical eye looking for connections... trust me they are there. I am not about to spoil some one by explaining it for blind people.
I mean to be honest the German dub is for me always a valid option to enjoy anime and especially the songs are just well done and translated around that time also for other anime
I love how Luffy's emotional intelligence is as high as his normal intelligence is low.
This is so true, there could be a poem about it 😂

Not sure if there were just as an example. think netflix only has upto like 420 or something so i ran out of stuff there to catch up on aside from the movies which i guess arent canon anyway so not sure its worth the time
@@magus104 lol it was a pretty big news for me back then 😂
We should defo be calling it a moonatie 😂
I love your one piece reactions ❤
Yoooo that hat 👀☠️
Atsuko just dropped their One Piece line!!!
in the English he says i can kick you ass. i prefer that
Looking at the map isn't really a spoiler.
His "i can defeat u!" face still haunts me btw. Why is it so bad
the heavens, destiny, the concept is kinda similar to a god i guess. mostly an asian thing
Mind Blanked so not able to think of a better comparison right now.
oh brother. if you rating Arlong a 9.7/10... you're gonna be dishin out 11s in no time 😂 12s and 13s by the time you're caught up.
For April Fools u should just watch a whole german episode lmao
Moo-natee
One day, youre gonna cry

Sorry but nakama does not mean friend
❤
I mean to be honest the German dub is for me always a valid option to enjoy anime and especially the songs are just well done and translated around that time also for other anime
Zoro is also pretty dumb 😆
