These 90s vintage Yamaha amps are pretty great values now. You can buy them with 5 or 6 channel input and just use them for their amps...and they work great.
The Yamaha RX-V490 was my first receiver and I still use it today. These are great and your video just made me feel a whole lot better about holding on to it!
I have 3 Yamaha receivers and one of them happens to be the RX-V 870. The model higher than this. It was my first receiver. Still works fantastic to this day. My dad gave it to me after he upgraded. I love 80s/90s Yamaha.
Man I remember running car audio off of my home receivers when I was younger then finding out tower pc power supplies had 12v dc output to run car amps “game changer” far before google to look this stuff up…..love the channel ❤
Currently have the Yamaha rx-v850. It's a beast! Built like a tank. Made in Japan rated at 80wpc but sounds like it has double that. Well worth grabbing these older Yamahas when they are available for sale.
Bought my Yamaha HTR-5280 in July 2000. I have been using it daily for 22 years and absolutely love it. The only problem with it? The digital volume knob does not work, can only adjust volume with remote (still using original remote too!). Yep, loving my old school receiver, God bless.
that's nice! I got HTR-5360 2 years ago for 100€/US$105 and still works like a charm, everything works mint. came with original speakers except the subwoofer, still happy that I jumped on that deal
Nice review. As time goes by these 90s receivers look better and better. I'm actually surprised that the receiver made the rated power. A lot of receivers from that era made bold claims for power output. I really enjoy your videos and I really enjoy vintage receiver reviews.
I just fixed a non-working Pioneer VSX-D1S. Man that amp is a monster, puts modern home theater amps to shame. It's rated 130 a channel but seen ppl test it to output around 180 a channel. I need to recap mine as there's a bit of a hum but 90s home theater amps are crazy.
I have a pioneer 505s paired to Cerwin Vega VS12s (from i believe 1992) and bose 301s (from 2000s) that I use everyday still. I heavily used them them in college (95-2001) and they are still kicking. At one point bought a yahama receiver to replace the pioneer but it was very under powered. So I went back to the 505s (rated 135 watts x4). I have since added 2 klipsche 12in powered subwoofers (300rms/600 max). Have an onkyo EQ as well. Old school for the win
Great job! I really wanted to send you my Yamaha M80 after the restore but it was nearly destroyed in shipping to the re-builder so I wasn't going to risk it.
Man I must of bought 7 or 8 different RX-V models back in the day. Good A/V receivers but they are so old now. I sold them all off and bought a modern A/V receiver to watch movies. When I want to listen to music I prefer a good stereo integrated amp, a power amp, or a vintage stereo receiver from the '70's.
I inherited a harmon kardon reciever about 18 years ago, it's always sounded incredible, I bought 3 kicker xpl 10's in a box about 14 years ago, pawn shop deal, 8 ohms apiece, hooked them to the harmon, not much happened, so I thought hmmm, ill try parallel "just temporary" one channel, 2.5 ohms, sounded good, other channels to mids/highs, sounded really good, I litterly left it that way until just the other night when I finally handed my subwoofer duties over to an old carver pt-1250, but it ran like that all this time, movies, music, moderate volumes, totally impressed with this old harmon..
Nice ol receiver there. I have the matching yst subwoofer for it!! I still love the old analog stuff. And have a nice little collection of receivers and amps. I like how fast that one changes audio fields. My denon takes seconds to change anything!!! Yea booiii.
Ever since AV receivers got TV inputs and monitor output, many set up the features are only adjustable from TV screen. I have Denon from mid 2000s, 9ch beast which had fried rear channels, but I use it only as stereo amp for my digital sources. It has some interesting features, plenty of juice for AV receiver but runs very warm. No sub out in stereo mode, and crossover only set for 80Hz, which kind of sucks.
I always buy Onkyo home receivers, but man do they run hot. Back in the day JVC receivers were really great bang for the buck and I even ran their 5-volt pre out car receivers. This is back in the 12 disc changer days lol.
I have a couple of these old home systems. They sound so "warm" compared to the newer ones. Even comparing my new Yamaha to the old ones. Not sure how to explain it just filled and warm.
I’ve always been to partial to Yamaha power amp (MX1000) ant crewing Vega subs…. It always bumped… I’ve never been disappointed with Yamaha home stereo equipment from the early 90s.
I actually have this receiver amp driving Audio Centron 8 ohm 150 watt A speakers 15 inch and horns are cast allot not plastic with Yamaha sub woofer and Yamaha 5 disc player all the other quality goodies but it is truly beautiful driving my main speakers , I wont get rid of it but wish I could get a respectfully priced remote controller as mine is worn out yes I have thrashed this system for years and years probably 6 days a week a couple of hours a day. super reliable and sounds AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!
I still have its' non-receiver big-brother from the same year - the DSP-A2070 which from memory cost me around £1200 here in the UK - a good friend (unfortunately no longer with us) had one of their first Dolby Digital amp models, the DSP-A3090 (think this was the first Yamaha one with the amp and decoder as a single unit)
You did good there! You made a great purchase back then. Very well featured unit. I agree on the new stuff lacking some manual control of levels and such. You did take good care of it. I still have my ole Kenwood KR-V8070. I think mine is one year newer than yours, since it has S-Video jacks. LOL.
Also use to like running my pc audio into the stereo receivers via a headphone jack from the pc to rca Into the receiver & my PlayStation 1 for the cd player then off to the car audio speakers & subs thru the receiver powered by car amps it was way cheaper then buying home audio style amps & subs plus it sounded really good when you built enclosures for everything
I have a JVC R-X330 receiver (built in 1985, made in Japan) rated at 55 wpc @ 8ohms, does anyone know what the actual wattage for those type of receivers/amps using these Dyno tests ?
Watch out on modern Yamahas. Had one crap out when a static charge jumped to the usb port on the front when disconnecting. Started screeching like something was frying. Turn it off and unplugged. So its not ESD protected there. Cool vid by the way. Very eye opening.
I only tested front 2ch’s in this amp and the other channels were unloaded. I didn’t see the point loading them as few people would use this receiver today with surround speakers.
Unless the power supply is under sized, you shouldn't see much of a measurable difference running less channels. Not a scenario you are going to encounter too often in quality equipment. In a real low end reciever you could see some increase, but it's really not much.
@@volvo09 oh it absolutely will be using an uderspec'd psu, almost all entry to mid level yamahas do. My rxv630 would drop to less than half the rated power with all channels driven, which is why they only ever rated them at 2 channel output.

@@wal2 It worked out well. I had a sound dynamics 15 inch sub and we watched the Star Wars trilogy on VHS in the summertime with the door open. picked up a v1000 with Dolby Digital 5.1 (circa 1998 model) from a thrift shop a few years ago but had that problem where it wouldn't come on, just hear the relays click. Never had a chance to fix it myself and ended up giving it to a random craigslist stranger that said he could fix it. Hopefully he brought new life to it. I'm sporting a 2018 Onkyo 686 now that has Dolby Atmos and DTS-X, as well as all the streaming services capability. Yamaha. We're more than just motorcycles. 👍 I still use my RX-V661 7.1 that I bought brand new which I believe is the first digital series after this one? It has a couple of HDMI inputs and one output, but the strangest thing . . . If I want to use the on-screen display I have to use the yellow analog video port. Good luck finding a new TV with that on it, these days. *Edit: I just realized I'm listening to you demo your Yamaha AVR on my Yamaha AVR! I'm over Yamaha-ed!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Cool show, I run a Yamaha 7.2, but using, it @5.1 via byamp, for my towers, I actually my prior amp was a denon , and In my opinion ,ill stay with my Yamaha, sounds 👍, thanks for a good review!!

Thanks for making this video. I've got a similar amp. I always wondered how accurate the power rating was. Any chance you could test a newer Hertz car amp? I've got a 5 channel. It performs quite well.

I sure don't 😂 never heard of it until one day I came across the GFA-545² I put the 2 like that because it's like In roman numerals on the amp. I used to have a woodgrain and metal pioneer that would hurt 2 15s and 2 12s at same time. Then would send that power through head phones. I put 2 Aiwa 4 inch mid bass drivers in big plastic oldschool headphones. Would literally make your eyes and head shake.
Most every modern receiver has individual channel volume control it's in the setting controlled by the remote with on screen guide or by app on phone or tablet.
@@wal2 i understand my prized possession what my Yamaha rx 2090 with a ddp-1. The ddp-1 was as big as a mid level receiver itself and the only thing it did was decode ac-3 5.1 and nothing else for the low low price of $600 . Then the future came along and turned it all into a paper weight with it's hdmi cables, hd tv, 7.1, 9.1, 11.1, wifi, Bluetooth, USB drives and 30 different formats of audio decoding. Awhile back I had a yamaha rx-v671 that I lost the remote to it and learned that you could not get to 95% of the settings without it. And to add to the frustration you have to have the exact remote that came with that and the model above it making it one of the rarest yamaha remotes
I wish I could see you test a Sony DA777ES. When I compared my Yamaha rx3000 to my 777 Sony I noticed it uses almost the exact same massive Tkk transformer, the part numbers are one digit off!! The RXV3000 uses the same amp section as the RXV2095 that's documented to do over 400 watts dynamic power!! The Sony 777ES is also a beast it's got that same transformer with instead dual rectifiers and dual parallel transistors what definitely seems to outperform my RXV3000 on a listening test🎧 If only I had my own amp lab to definitively tell with numbers🤓
@@wal2 did a video of the repairs on my channel, also started a 2 15" subwoofer build using some unique parts from several different manufacturers, it has been a learning experience for sure.
@@wal2 that would probably be the hmdi board. the boards failed due to heat when you used the hdmi pass through to power other items. disabling that feature usually prevents that from happening. Onkyo underrated their amps at the time. i still have mine, it definitely puts out more than 135RWMS at 8ohms. i only ever saw two tests for the sr805, they measured ~175WRMS and 183WRMS @ 1%THD, 20hz-20khz, in to 2 channels. the latter test did a bench with all 7 channels driven and it STILL managed 150RWMS. i would love to see the 805 or 875 belting out 300wrms+ at 4 ohms, lol. the specs for the sr805 and 875 can be found on the onkyo website still. google "tx-sr805 7 channel" and it should be the 5th result.

I used to have a woodgrain and metal pioneer that would hurt 2 15s and 2 12s at same time. Then would send that power through head phones. I put 2 Aiwa 4 inch mid bass drivers in big plastic oldschool headphones. Would literally make your eyes and head shake.
😬👍
Man I had an old Yamaha given to me at one point but I couldn't integrate it with my setup very well at the time. God that thing sounded good though.
😬👍
Most every modern receiver has individual channel volume control it's in the setting controlled by the remote with on screen guide or by app on phone or tablet.
Yeah but not as easily accessible as here on the remote
ELNA audio grade!!!! wow!!!!
I have some Sony ES gear I’ll be showing off, but I don’t have that model. I’m a huge Sony ES fanboy
anyone know if he has tested a modern Yamaha receiver for comparison?
Please please dyno more Yamaha home receivers 👍👍
Thanks for the suggestion 👍
I listening to this video on a pair of Paradigm speakers powered by a Yamaha RX-V850. Looks the same
😬👍
We dyno'ing Soundbars next!
Oh man!
I got a 76 sansui 9090db id love to see what she can do
Home receivers and amps are just too heavy and fragile to ship back and forth
Way Kool keep em coming
👌😬👍
Just put fans in a 1991 1250 watt carver, it rocks!
Oh man Carver is NICE!
@@wal2 did a video of the repairs on my channel, also started a 2 15" subwoofer build using some unique parts from several different manufacturers, it has been a learning experience for sure.
need to start using pa speakers
What speakers did you pair up with it back in the day
Boston Acoustics towers. I still have them in my home theater. Saved up the whole Summer to get them.
would love to see an Onkyo TX-SR805. that thing was 60lbs of beast mode.
I have an 8XX model I think. Had video switching issues but amp still works. I’ll look for it, around here somewhere
Would it be wise to use a receiver like this to power car audio speakers
Sure would work fine
….perfect test for this amp.
Can you test a 4 channel amp (as you do, all channels loaded) then show the difference when only 2 of the 4 are driven.
The reasons is:
A) it shows why you do it and the difference in measurement if you don’t
B) it shows how current A/V amps will deliver less power/more power when all channels are loaded vs 2 channel.
Many AV amps lie and drive only one channel in the ratings. The rating is accurate but you rarely ever have a mono movie. Also it serves as an explanation as to why av amps sound thin with all channels loaded.
Lastly, I use a 4 channel amp and I only drive 2 channels. I’d love to know what kind of difference it makes when you only drive 2 of 4 channels.
Agreed
Could you plz do a dyno on a onkyo tx-nr901 home receiver?
Thanks for the suggestion
@@wal2 thank you for taking the time to reply back I really do appreciate it
Canned air works good too
Are you saying I’m full of hot air?
@@wal2 for blowing off dust
I have an audio technica and it powers a 800watt rms subwoofer pretty easily at low volume at 2 ohms
👌😬👍
I have one that blew up.
😲
Can you do denon amps
I don’t have any at this time but who knows what the future brings?
coming to 2022 we see yamaha writing "1000w rms" on powered speaker with rated maximum input of 70w.
Go down to dollar tree buy all your different type wipes etc. Way cheaper and many choices. Dollar tree has a lot of great stuff like that.
👌😬👍
wish you cold test my pioneer SX-1250
Receivers are big and heavy and shipping would be a nightmare
Nice
👌😬👍
I have the Yamaha R-V1103 reciever upstairs its from the 90s has alk the s video plugs on the back🤣 But its a monster anyway.
That one is a beast!
I picked up one for free and a bunch of vinyl and CD's. Someone left it at a thrift store parking lot, next to a strip club. If that's your stuff. Holler at your scorned lover. I enjoyed your California Raisins CD
😝👍
This receiver much better than today Chinese shit.
I have Yamaha AX 550 1990 YEARS also
Yamaha RX-V 2095. And I'M VERY HAPPY !!!.
👌😬👍
@@wal2
Today I bought:
Yamaha piano craft RX-E400 CD-X400 Speakers NX-E 400.
Yamaha RX-V 559
Yamaha RX-V 596
Yamaha RX-V 795
Yamaha RX-V 2600
My RX-V357 is still throwing out the tunes. Hasn't put a foot wrong.
😬👍
More home audio tests, some real amps
👌😬👍
Have this same amp definitely don’t run it low passed bridged to an 8 ohm subwoofer😬😬😬
Oh snap crackle pop!
the ax900 yamaha is a really poerfull vintage amplifier💪this is s... it
🤦♂️
If you drive all 5 channels you probably at max get around 55 watts per channel
And then older Yamahas we're good systems
Ratings of 70w/ch were given with front and rear channels loaded.
@@wal2 interesting. The power supply doesn't have the capacity to do so. Would be interesting to see it do it though. These older units were quite good though so I wouldn't be surprised if it was able to do it.
