Mamamoo is amazing, incredible to think they've been around 10 years and although they're more focused on their solo careers they're all still making incredible music. I should also add, those other big name groups you mentioned were part of a big company's. The promotion was not strong from RBW. Definitely should have done more.
I should also add, to the add, is that Mamamoo have potential for longevity. They work well together. Its their 10th year now... none of them have said that Mamamoo is over. There have been vague hints and promises of tours as a group. Their management did coordinate to post the same 10th your anniversary of mamamoo picture from each of their company's. There is a video on the 26th coming out which appears to include their managers in a competition at some point, so they do talk, and work together. Gives me hope of future mamamoo content. Right now, its all about individual album's and individual tours... Just keeping eyes open for any unexplained gaps in their calenders that coincide with the whole group, which could be a clue for a comeback :)
I definitely agree that Mamamoo is under appreciated and too often overlooked, but I don’t think the timing of when they debuted/released music is a major contributor. Mamamoo does have a fairly large fan base, especially in Korea, as they gained a lot of recognition through their live performances at festivals, on Queendom, and on the show Immortal Songs. The phrases “Mamamoo never disappoints” and “BeLisMamamoo” aka believe and listen to Mamamoo are known throughout the Korean public. But if you try to measure their success through recent music show wins or charts you don’t see this effect as much. There are several contributing factors to that discrepancy. 1. Moomoos try to support other groups too, particularly rookies and groups from small companies. A lot of MooMoos remember when Mamamoo were rookies and had only 3 people show up to support them at their debut stage. We don’t want others to have to experience that, and Mamamoo is really supportive of this outlook. 2. A lot of MooMoos are older. We’re not in middle or high school anymore and have full time jobs. That makes it hard to just repeat stream a song for days, which is now pretty much a requirement to have enough for a win on most music shows. 3. Mamamoo does what they want. They’re not releasing music to target a specific audience or follow trends. They just release what they want. Sometimes that does end up targeting a specific audience (fans of R&B, fans who like really wacky concepts, LGBT+ fans, fans who need to hear messages of self-empowerment) but they’re not releasing things or staging things with marketing in mind. They’re just doing whatever they (and sometimes their CEO) want to do (ie Sleep in the Car is a masterpiece that their CEO thought would be fun after watching Solar and Wheein joke around on MamamooTV). Where other girl groups like Twice, Gfriend, and Blackpink each cultivated an image and concept that reaches a specific target audience, Mamamoo doesn’t have an official concept. You can joke that their concept is doing whatever the heck they want, blast the consequences (once you learn more of the history of the group you’ll hear the long list of examples of that). Some of Mamamoo’s fanbase, myself included, love that about them. They’re just being themselves and releasing good music. What more could we want? But some fans are into Kpop for the dances, for the concepts, for the visuals, and while Mamamoo is great at all of those things, none of those things are their focus so those fans are less likely to find them in their initial dive into Kpop or choose them as their ult favorite group. I hope that helps give some context to the fanbase situation. I could list out their accomplishments for hours , but if you check out the various guide videos you’ll get a fuller picture. 😊
