      @TheRomanRuler 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Mannerheim, our commander in chief and de facto head of the state during the war, believed Finland could hold out 2 weeks. And he was experienced soldier, highly awarded in Imperial Russian army, and tsar`s close bodyguard, so he knew Russian army and since he lead Finnish forces in civil war he knew Finns too of course.
      So who exactly tough that Finland could last 2-3 months? Same optimists who think Sweden does not need army in 21st century?

    • @Leaffordes
      @Leaffordes 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheRomanRuler Some optimist? Finland held out 10 more days then expected from the Swedish defense command (who had close connection with the Finnish defense system). How is that an optimistic estimation? Just the fact that Finland held out around 100 days and not 14 days says something about who was more correct....
      Sweden was not THAT surprised as the rest of the world, since we pretty much knew everything about the Finnish defense and a lot about the Russian offensive troops, since we felt threatened by the Russians as well.
      Or do you really think of yourself as the 300 Spartans? LOL.

    Pah. Frustrating read many of those below comments. 'Nationalism-to-the level-of-idiocy' makes me sad. First, modern warfare is not like Talvisota 1939-40, nor it is like Continuation War 1941-1944. It's not like Lapland War 1944-1945. Finland's defensive capacity is now at far higher level absolutely, but much lower relatively. Geopolitical situation isn't same then it was either. If looking things from Russian perspective, there are actually nothing that would make Finnish territory worth of attacking, it's 1300+ km border with Russia is most stable stretch of The Federation's borders, thing that has itself enormous strategic value.
    For Finns it's wise to keep good relationship with Russia, idiotic warmongering and revenge mentality has never done anything good to Finland (not then when Finland was part of Kingdom of Sweden, not now), and same goes with Russians too. What's true, Finland has never been part of Russia. During era of Principality of Finland, Russian Tzars were nominal rulers of Finland in their person, but still Principality had it's own government, that was more or less functional even during most harshest periods of repression and Russification attempts.
    However you may think about the readiness and capabilities of Finnish Defense Forces, it's clear that a price of the mile on Finnish ground would be very high for attacker in modern conventional warfare, and by default Finnish Army won't ever attack to the east (or anywhere else if it's leadership follow the constitution of The Republic) as it would be - de facto - national suicide.
    Geopolitical location of Finland forces the nation to keep up relatively strong military and military potential, as there cannot exist military vacuum in these acres of Nordic lands. Not historically, not now. Polito-economically it is just stupid thing to ignore Russian Federation, particularly in recent times of turmoil in The world's economics.
    Finnish Airforce's next fighter type should be Russian, as they are generally far superior technically compared to their American counterparts (Oddly these things are not talked about in Finnish, American owned medias). Sadly various political reasons prevent mutually beneficial strategic level economic ties with Russia and Finland these days, and when it comes to development of Russian internal affairs, things in these matters won't likely go easier in the foreseeable future.
    Finnish political and war history is one big case study of everything else then 'black-and-white' type thinking. Some realistic conclusions can be drawn from it without over-pouring asshat patriotism and moronic level nationalism, and militarism.

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Finland's defensive capacity is now at far higher level absolutely, but much lower relatively."
      That's just plain wrong. I don't think you understand how ill prepared finnish army was at the start of the Winter war. We had 100 AT-guns against thousands of tanks. We had 32 obsolete tanks. Our artillery was of late 1800s and some first world war era guns and we had very little ordenance for it.
      The finnish army is relatively much more stronger compared to whole armed forces of Russia(without use of nuclear weapons) than it was against the part of Soviet Forces used to invade Finland during the Winter war. Had they used proper force from beginning, Finland would have been crushed during the Winter war.

    Finland on a map looks like a little dot, but don't let that deceive you. It's a remarkable country and I know that without even having been there yet although I hope to go soon! I love Scandinavia and my only complaint about Europe is that most of its countries (except Finland) help out the Americans and the Brit governments, and while I am American and have love of most Americans I hate Bush I don't like Obama at all and Britain has been a mess for ages too. Let's face it NATO isn't working anymore time to modernize and re-adapt. Britain was once a fantastic place and once the English were brilliant and very kind and I loved it. Now even though I have best friends there I have no interest. The entire country is crumbling and there is a disturbing trend towards violent nationalism as bad or worse than Russia! Avoid the UK. Go find your peace of mind in Europe especially Scandinavia or come here. We'll treat you good most of us except for some insane bastards here called REPUBLICANS, TEA PARTY, KKK, and I think you know what I'm getting at- the right wing.

      Not good to hear. No country is perfect and certainly I couldn't handle the weather in Finland. We are having Nordic Nightmare weather all winter and now still in the East Coast USA. Defense cuts are a worldwide plague except Russia and a few other inferiority/superiority complex countries.

    And also, why cant we buy some other attack helicopters? Russian attack helicopters like Mil Mi-28, and Mil Mi-24 are also effective, also italians has made very effective attack chopper.. Well, mainly the reason why we cant buy ANYKIND of attack choppers, is the money.

    Finland is the rare countries in the world to have obligatory national military service. While the overall tendency in west europe is to constantly reduce the army strenght, russians have renewed their military strike force back to its glory days. T-90 or SU T-50 could win any major engagement. Russia's military budget show overall rise to 53%. In year 2011 Russia spent 72 billion dollar on arms.THey have over 2 million men in arms. It's frightening if you think about it seriously but no1 cares

    Siis täyttä propagandaa tää. Korostetaan pientä prosenttia siitä, mitä Suomen armeija on ja jätetään se suurin osa(Kulunu roska) näyttämättä. Suomen armeijan mainosvideot ovat melkeen kaikki malliesimerkkejä propagandasta. Hyvin ollaan lainattu idän naapuria.

    NO disrespect intended. This seems to be a very disciplined, well organized and equiped army.
    but I don't really think they would stand any chance against the Russians...Specially considering the nuclear power the Russians have... Also the experience they have in war after WW 2 is decisive...
    These guys might destroy the Swedish army though...

    • @Hackedideal
      @Hackedideal 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      But war isn't only about nuclear weapons. It would be a bad deal for Russia if they would drop a nuclear bomb into finland or detonate it in sky in the area of Finland, because it would turn all of the Finland into nuclear waste. Who would want a piece of crap. But it is very unlikely to use a nuclear weapons in the most likely incoming third russian invasion of Finland.
      Luckily the Ukrainian crisis happened, it has brought us more acceptation against NATO. And it will lead us being in the NATO someday. Or a military alliance with Sweden. Or to our very own nuke. And or bigger army.

      First off all: nobody is going to start a nuclear war next to St. Petersburg, secondly Finland has no nuclear weapons. And Russian tourists make up 20 % of Finnish hospitality, nobody wishes war mate!
