I think the drybar vid suffered the same fate as some of the cnbcmakeit videos: if the person starting their business had inaccessible help (in her case, a big investment from her brother), people immediately drop relatability from anything she said or was going to say in her story. Everyone loves an underdog or rags to riches story because that feels more relatable to majority of yt audiences and thus more inspirational.

  • @stevew6647
    @stevew6647 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +35

Hi Shelby - Personally, I think the difference with the drybar vs other videos is simply about the topic and how wide an audience is interested in clicking on it. The drybar video was lower traffic and so was the electric speedboat, but both of those have a limited demographic interest. Meanwhile, house hunting, travel hacks, AirBnB business, etc., all did well, probably because they apply to everybody (most people want to make more $$, most people want to own a home, and most people travel in some way). You've had lots of high quality videos do well, and only a few less well, and I think it's simply about how much of your audience is interested, as opposed to it being high-effort video vs less-effort podcast-style.

Hi. Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner here… just here to say that the medical provider has absolutely nothing to do with the way your are billed and outside of our hands. It actually pisses me off to see how high those bills are because I assure you I get paid crumbs and am pushed to see an outrageous amount of patients. I am surely making the company thousands more than they are compensating.

      That’s Not true at all!
Y’all code things according to what you do and those codes are given from the insurance (patient has private insurance). So maybe you should check with you MD or office manager what they code things are and how much things costs.
I realize it’s not your lane to know coding/prices but don’t come on here and tell us it’s out of y’all’s hands!

I truly think no one cares about the high value content anymore bc there is soooo much of it. It doesn’t feel authentic there is no connection with a highly produced video anymore. I think it goes back to we are lonely and looking for relatable people now

    • @DonTinsley
      @DonTinsley 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

To add to this: I think it has to do with whether the video is relatable , maybe not so much to do with production value.
Just a thought: maybe experiment with creating a highly produced commentary video to see the response.
When I watch the commentary video it feels and sounds like the highly produced video without the visuals so I find myself listening to the video instead of watching the video.
The highly produced videos are much more engaging than the commentary video and I find myself drowning out the commentary and then find myself rewatching, whereas the highly produced video, I take time out of my day to watch the video, instead of playing as background noise.
      Hopefully helpful.

Hey Shelby- one thing I think to consider if you’re going to hit on how wedding vendors like photogs charge so much more for weddings is that it’s necessary because the pressure is immensely higher, it’s not a shoot where you can redo things, it’s all one and done moments that you have to be skilled enough to get right the first time every time and the value people put on having these moments captured is so much higher than a brand or someone who can easily schedule a reshoot for another day or a different photog if they outcome isn’t great.

Also, a large portion of wedding photography is the editing afterwards. My daughter is a photographer and spends a TON of time with editing. Some situations can be low lighting which can suck up huge chunks of time (days and days) trying to get them to look decent. The time spent at the wedding itself is just a drop in the bucket. Also I think weddings are much higher maintenance in terms of expectations than any other type of photography.

@@Snippets-of-Mendi I was going to say the same thing. People think it’s $5,000 for one day, but it’s actually more like weeks of work, plus the expertise of that photographer. And usually if you are paying $5,000 or more it’s because they have two or three photographers, not just one.

I got married in 2022. I am the eldest daughter of 3 sisters and first granddaughter to get married from both my mom’s and dad’s families. My husband is the first of his family to ever host a wedding for his gigantic immediate family. So, the pressure was on to put on THE wedding of the century. Total cost was $56k without a day-of coordinator and a mediocre photographer and DJ to host just shy of 200 people. We still managed to come out debt-free. A part of me wishes I had done a court marriage and dropped the $ on a house but 🤷🏾‍♀️ The single thing that keeps me from regretting all of it is that both of my sisters thanked me for dealing with the hassle of hosting a big wedding so that they won’t have to when they get married.

I got a bill months later from some other facility for the xrays? Also earlier in the year I spoke with a therapist. They billed the insurance company wrong. I kept telling them to fix it and almost a year later both are still there. Finally the insurance website has a "I already paid for this" button. Insurance is such a scam. My mom had a stroke in 2019. The insurance went from saying she owes 50k to paying like $600 screw all of those companies and how they take advantage of people.

Regarding the medical bill, the time the provider charges is based on the total time the provider spent on your medical case including time to review your chart, documentation, and the time they consulted with you. 20 years ago, I got engaged on Monday evening and had the wedding on Thursday of the same week. It was only 8 people besides the officiant, groom and myself, and it was a catered affair. It was the wedding of my dreams: so beautiful that people blew up photos for their walls. I would do it again in a heartbeat. It was a whirlwind of planning and I was on vacation and it was so much fun running around the city buying my dress, flowers, cakes, etc.i had a wine collection that I used. And a friend and the officiant wrote the vows. A friend had calla lilies delivered for the centerpiece. Everyone got caught up in the spontaneous nature of the thing. Cost: $1000, including my diamond infinity band (bought in a pawn shop). The only downside was that everyone was convinced I was pregnant (I wasn’t.)

(putting on my cranky old lady hat) It seems that weddings today are more about putting on a show, rather than a ceremony pledging your lives to each other. In reality, a wedding is a ceremonious signing of a legal contract. The parties, the music, the photographers/videographers, catering, drinks, etc, etc, etc. are nice, but they are not necessary. Wear a pretty dress (that does not cost thousands), dress up a bit, use your local church, or a park...or just go to a justice of the peace. Have an after party (reception) at your parents' home...or your own home. Scale it down and use the money for other things.
When I got married (almost 50 years ago), we did the ceremony at the church (free), our minister did it ($125 for his time), my brother-in-law did the church photos and a few at the reception (he was starting his photography business and used us as advertising), the reception was at my parents' home, the cake was inexpensive, same for the flowers (local florist), I got my dress on sale at the mall (and I loved it!! lacey hoop skirt and all!), my mother sewed the bridesmaid dresses. My new husband and I did a motorcycle ride to Laguna Beach for our honeymoon. If we spent more than a thousand dollars, it wasn't by much. I still have very fond memories of our wedding (even after the divorce).
People need to tone down on the expensive nonsense. Seriously. Keep it simple...and inexpensive. Why add to your student debt burden just to try to impress people who may not matter to you in a few years? (and don't get me started on obscene student debt!! You kids deserve better than that!)

Wedding photographer here! Personally, my packages are $4.5k - $5.5k (not living in a major city) depending on what you want, but this is after years of experience. Like others have said, it’s not like a normal session where you can re-do something (like the ceremony, etc.), but I will say weddings have gotten way out of control. It’s less about enjoying the day with friends and family and more about getting the “pics for instagram”. I will say also, there is sooooo much prep work before AND after the wedding. I’m on calls with the bride, planning out timelines, family shot lists, etc all before the wedding to make sure things run smoothly. Not to mention the hours of editing afterwards. So you’re not just paying $4.5k for “one day of work.” Then there is the aspect of photography as art and how you can charge more for your specific style of shooting and/or editing because it is unique to your brand. There are so many factors that go into pricing and all photographers are different!

The thing about videos is that putting a lot of effort into one doesn’t make it inherently good, and putting less effort into one doesn’t make it inherently bad. Think about all the Marvel movies lately that they spend absurd amounts of money on. Spending a lot of money and time on something does not mean that it will create an overall good experience that people are interested in watching. The drybar video probably did bad because, frankly, it sounds boring as hell. No offense, I just don’t care to watch a video about the founder of any company, much less the founder of a company I don’t care about. But I do like to hear people talk about interesting topics for like 30 mins to an hour, kinda like a podcast. I like hearing peoples opinions on things, and I like having something to listen to while I work or cook dinner. Maybe it’s just what’s popular rn, but if I were you I would just lean into what’s working and what people like.

Shelby Thank you so much for sharing your experience with medical and health insurance!
It is so ridiculous we are charged so much. We pay all these taxes every year and cannot afford health insurance ort we pay for health insurance and still have to worry about going. The system is so messed up! Where as lower income tiers get free everything pays absolutely nothing. I have not visited a doctor since I was 21. This was the age I started working. I would have to pay one week's paycheck to get insurance and still have $6000 deductible. unacceptable!

It always scares us when we see from Europe what horrendous bills people in the USA have to pay for their health.
We here in Europe, I come from Germany, it doesn't matter if I have to go to the doctor or the hospital, I don't get a bill.
What we have is 10 € per day limited to 28 days = 280 €. That's all we have. And I can declare these costs on my taxes and get something back.
Hospitalization in the USA should be a horror in terms of costs and unaffordable.

While I enjoyed the dry bar video, that has a really niche audience and the topic doesn’t really lend itself to broader discussions. It was really well shot and I get that it is frustrating you didn't get as much of a return that you were hoping for. In my opinion, don’t over generalize the relative lack of traction that video got to that kind of video as a whole. There’s a ton of artistry to it and you have had other videos like it that have done very well. My issue with it was that I would never get that service and I don’t think most people (even inside LA) would really care about it. Yes it was a huge financial success but it is sort of a luxury product that isn’t within reach for most people. If I’m going to treat myself I’m way more likely to spend extra money on food. I love the idea of the tipping culture video. Something like UberEats might be just as expensive per usage but might resonate with more people. You could interview drivers, restaurant owners, and even your own experience as a customer over time. When I lived in LA I would go into restaurants and they seemed empty but it would take forever to get my food because of all the mobile orders and it really killed the vibe of a lot of places. You could really get into the impact it has had on people’s lives in the restaurant industry or people who are doing gig work or even people working at Uber on those algorithms. Arguably the smart sweets video did so well because who isn't interested in trying to make healthier choices and it is cool that something we wouldn't think of like candy could be a part of that--and it makes me feel good that someone found a gap and was entrepreneurial to solve it.
I don't think the dry bar service has quite the same level of resonance because it wasn't as deep. It was cool to hear the story of how the founder made it work... but it isn't really a product that would make me feel good about using it or make me think more about what I'm doing.
My only general critique as well is that when you talk about trends or “what people are doing” or “what people think” it could be more useful to ground it in your experience or what you personally have found. As an individual you resonate way more talking through how things strike you rather than how society thinks, mostly because it is really hard to talk for everyone. When you say things from your perspective, or provide a platform for others you interview from their perspective, it is also likely to land with more people too because it is easier to identify with an individual. Love your videos and I've learned a ton from you, thanks Shelby!! :)

Respectfully I was in Walgreens a few weeks ago and a COVID test is still going like $20-40, not $2, but while I don’t think some of those prices are fair you do have to take in the time and hours of the people who ran the actual test, separate from the people who saw you.
My Hot take, weddings may seem outrageously expensive when you live in LA/NY. I would get some average costs of weddings in different parts of the country (Midwest) and/or maybe compare the average costs of weddings in other countries (not people who held a wedding just out of the country). I feel like weddings are the new way of keeping up with the joneses when you know owning a home is way too far off, but personally I’m so turned off from ever having a big wedding or spending a lot of money and would rather have a backyard wedding and spend money on a home or nice vacation. 😂
Regarding the wedding stuff I’m not sure if they have these in and around LA but a handful of my people I know who got married in the last few years got married at event centers where they included tables, plates, linens, dj, place to get ready for bride and groom. They helped with all of the vendor lists that they worked with for bartending and security and then you just chose who did your catering and the cost was 10k-15k and take payment plans.

Healthcare here in the US is horrible. No cap price on visits or procedures etc. I’m up in my 50’s and worried and stressed anytime I need to go to the doctor or Er etc. My husband has worked for a company for over 20 years and our healthcare premiums have skyrocketed and we still are stuck paying percentages of everything, even medication. The high costs is medical even makes percentages of the bill unaffordable to us. Our deductible seems to double every year ever since 2020. Ridiculous. The little amount of time allotted for a medical appointment isn’t even enough time to get to the problems when every visit they spend 10 minutes just looking over their notes from last visit and everything the medical assistant asks when first going into the exam room, the doctor then asks everything the medical assistant just asked. It’s crazy. Then the bill is huge, because they bill it as a complex visit. I have a lot of medical issues that unfortunately I have put off for so long, and recently trying to get them addressed but then they only hone in on one thing at a time(a visit). Then send you to a specialist who cannot even get me in for 4-6 months. All while what I have going on, needs addressing now.

I did add some trendy things I saw on TikTok that I thought was cute but husband (weird) said ‘we aren’t doing anything crazy, we don’t want people to think we have money when we don’t’ 😂 I’m a teacher and he’s a manager at a gym so regardless of how much we tried to rein it in the industry is very expensive. My wedding is probably around $38,000-$40,000. I wanted to elope, but he didn’t, so we just tried to keep costs down. My best friends wedding was $65k, my cousins $45k, his sisters $150k…but I think it really depends more on the venue, the person, and I guess their style.

A lot of urgent care centers are owned by hospitals. In that case they charge the same as the hospital ER. If you complain about their charge, they will claim they are a branch office of the ER, but it is a scam because they do not inform you in advance of the service. Their fee will include a facility fee for just being there in case you need them. Find a convenient urgent care center that is open every day and call them to be sure they are not part of a hospital operation. Then always use the same one if possible. They will already have your information which saves you time.

I had this complaint about medical for a long time. The problem is them jacking up the price of everything. Here what I propose... We need to set usury standards in medical cost. When I say this people come back with, this is america and the government can't get involved with regulating cost! Oh really then why do they do it to us in Finance industry. We have laws that state we are not allowed to charge past a certain percentage, or fees or its considered abusive. The reason is finance is a crucial function of the U.S. economy... I say medical also falls in this realm. So I propose that there be limits on a covid test, a hospital room etc or being charge $80 for a single aspirin. For example at a ER visit, they charged me 5k an hour for a room( that was just the room rental there was 18k of other things just to tell me I had covid). The Hyatt in Maui presidential suite cost that much and I get it for 24 hours. This needs to be the next legislative bill we push for, this gauging has gone way to far!

Sweety I'm from country where gov regulate the prices and there is 1 national "free" medical system, yes it's free but you have to wait for appt sometimes 2 years and it doesnt matter if its cardiology or something else that needs fast intervention. So people ending up going for private visits and still have to pay. Plus free health it's not free you still have to pay for med, glasses and everything and food in hospital is like either threw up or a dry bread with hot dog.

@@joannathatcares Not asking for free at all. just a 10 cent aspirin shouldn't cost $80 per pill while in hospital. that literally the upcharge. Now because its emergency I get a hyped charge. but from 10 cents to $80 is not reasonable. These prices hurt the insurance companies which makes them put the hurt on us. I say start with the source of the problem the underlying cost.

I got married in late 2022 and I was never someone that "grew up dreaming of the perfect wedding", I actually went in thinking that weddings are way over-priced and that I didn't believe in spending so much on one day of your life, but it is SO EASY to get sucked into the new wedding culture via social media. if you look at only a couple wedding-themed posts on instagram or TikTok, suddenly your whole feed is wedding tips and wedding dresses and wedding trends, and it can easily become your whole life trying to plan all of this elaborate stuff just to make the wedding feel "normal" compared to what you are seeing online. this also extends to other events like the bridal shower, bachelorette, etc, it's all so over the top and expensive/time consuming for everyone involved.

My aunt and uncle got married about 25 years ago, and they spent $30k on the wedding. A few years later, they declared bankruptcy. While the wedding wasn't the only source of debt, I think if they had spent less on the wedding or just eloped and skipped a big, expensive celebration altogether, they might not have had to declare bankruptcy. The bankruptcy ruined their credit and they had to rent apartments instead of being able to buy a house for the subsequent ten years after the bankruptcy.

Vandalism falls under your comprehensive coverage on your car which is separate from collision. You can lower the deductible to $50, $100, even $0 and it’s usually not a lot more each month. It’s a no-fault category so your rate won’t go up for making a claim. It also covers other non-collision damage (falling or airborne objects, animals, theft recovery, etc) and glass. Sooo worth it to have low or no deductible and it’s a lot less frustrating when something happens.

I am a doctor and I agree your bill is ridiculous - I tell patients all the time that if they get some insane bill from the hospital or their insurance that they should try to get more info, make sure there aren't any mistakes. I have many patients who get refunds!
I do want to make one point though - the medical billing is a little more complicated than just time-based billing. it also takes into account any testing you reviewed or ordered, and how high risk the situation is. you only bill a 99202 (level 2) if the patient has basically no problems and you ordered no tests. even one test would be billed for a 99203 (level 3) because it is additional data you need look at and review (though I 100% hear that reviewing a flu swab does not take a lot of energy...). a 45min code definitely does sound incorrect in your situation. there are times when I may spend 30min reviewing a patient's chart (looking at notes from other doctors, reviewed past lab tests and treatments tried, etc) + 20min with the patient in the room, and it gets billed as a 50min encounter. I can see how a patient would be confused looking at that, when we were only in the room for 20min. but there can a lot of work behind the scenes that you don't see. also, if a medication is ordered, it is usually automatically billed as a level 4 because there is additional monitoring that needs to be done to make sure the patient tolerates the medication well, that the medication works, etc. it is honestly very confusing and takes us a while to learn (I am still learning, and sometimes the billers correct what I put in), and statistically (at least at my department) most doctors are actually more likely to accidentally under-charge than over-charge.
again, I don't think this applies in your situation specifically, but sometimes for others to keep in mind in case they are wondering how this all works!

I don't know how others feel about taking practice exams, but - like the actor I once was whose job was memorizing lines - I took them over and over again. The time was very VERY well spent. And it didn't really take that long. I'd estimate one or two mornings (after procrastinating for months), and a review of the practice exams on the day prior to taking the actual RE Exam.
I did attend a RE school, and had a binder full of real world RE practices along with the practice exams.
When I took the RE Exam, I finished first, and was out the door in twenty minutes. I swear to heaven that is true. I'm no great mind, just an average Joe, and I sure as hell I wasn't going for speed - I just wanted to pass. But I knew the stuff cold.
Good luck to you,. But with your disciplined approach to work, I'm sure you'll nail it!
Btw, the way you approach sports is enviable, too. For a novice, your backhand is stellar. I learned tennis during the time when the tennis world was transitioning from one-handed backhands, to the now universally-dominant two-handed method.
My coach was old school and never even mentioned the two-handed method. As a result, my backhand never developed, and was the weakest part of my game. It doomed me, along with my age, to be a less than mediocre player. Maybe I was a lousy athlete, too, which could never be said about you and, for that matter, Monica.
The most interesting thing about my tennis game may be that I took lessons from a coach who had access to a private court - which was on an estate high in the Hollywood Hills. The estate was owned by an old-timey singer and movie star you've probably never heard of. Standing on the court, the entire valley could be seen sprawling below.
    Maybe someday you'll sell it.

You can always reach out to your state insurance commissioner if you feel you are being billed incorrectly. I did that on a bill that my insurance said the provider was "out of network" even though i got the providers name from their website listing her as "in network". I tried multiple times on the phone with my insurance, which went no where. After contacting the insurance commissioners department they paid the bill in full. It also reminds the insurance companies that someone is overseeing what they are billing.

Hi Shelby I’m a nurse practitioner and can explain ICD and CPT codes if you like… US healthcare is crazy and way too expensive. As a mid level provider, we make less than even some nurses without graduate degrees. It’s crazy.

The medical provider does not choose how they bill you and what is coded. There are standards diagnosis and procedure codes based on CMS guidelines.

I’ve been paralyzed for ten years and still have to convince my insurance to cover my wheelchair.

Shelby, you make quality content regardless of the format. So quality isn't the issue with you. I hope you figure out the bill and I'm glad you are pushing them. It kooks like they are price gouging you. Loved this vlog and I always look forward in what you do!
