As an HBCU student in the mid 80's I never understood the purpose of black frats other than for the popularity aspect of it. Anything these groups do in the community could easily be done without them. We are already segregated enough without doing it to ourselves.
Anthony, you possessed a strand of common sense that many of us did not have. God bless you with the courage to not be drawn to that lifestyle. Me...not so much. I played football, was in ROTC, and was a member of a frat so my mindset was extraordinarily elitist and segregated...but God! I'm amazed that people place so much in fraternities. To be honest we place some of the same importance on denominations, jobs, relationships. There are a lot of things that we place before the Father. I'm glad they found peace in their decisions.

What the ex alpha stated is totally correct. I. A black man that became a mason as a young man in college. It ran all through my family. But for some reason. I didn’t stay active in it. It was just something that kept me from it. I then pledged a white fraternity. Kappa sig. and during the ritual. I remember things being said from the Masonic ritual. It all stems from masonry.

So true, You cannot enter into these organizations without being checked by the holy spirit, if you're of God. Crazy, because there are religious people, like ministers and religious leaders that pledge. I remember my initiation, i felt in my spirit that i should run out of there because it appeared like a cult (let your no be your no) but I stayed because i allowed my flesh to win.(rebellious) I always felt weird with that delta ritual stuff we did during process. It never felt right. Evictous was wrong. I never felt right to say Delta was captive. I always filled in the words "God is captive of my soul". When I was in college God would not let me pledge a Greek letter organization no matter how much I wanted to. What the former member of Alpha Phi Alpha stated is totally on point at 7:30. I used to think that I was missing out but when I found out who I truly was as an individual and a man of the most high I was able to understand that my bond with him is the ultimate bond needed more than anything else in life. When I learned about the power of oaths and covenants as a man I was able to really thank God for shielding me as an undergrad at a PWU that looked at BGLA as something to aspire to
If you are joining a fraternity to just to belong or get some identity then you have bigger issues and should not seek a fraternity or any organization for that matter to fill the void. This is the problem with all those on this panel. They were looking to be made whole. That's not the purpose of a fraternity and because they did not get that they are giving false narratives of what it means to be a part of these great organizations that do great work in the community. He was later fired, sued them and became an instructor teaching about media at Howard. They are not speaking on truth but rather their own individual experiences, which is interesting. I am member of a Black letter Greek organization (represented in this clip) and never experienced anything he mentioned. My chapter was/is Christ centered with nothing mentioned to the contrary (deities). There were actual bible verses used to encourages us during our process. I say all of this to say, that none of the negative experiences discussed in this clip are condoned, publicly or privately, by any of the divine 9 organizations...but chapters have some autonomy and may have inserted their own ritualistic slant (which is unfortunate). Lastly, I want to address the use of the word 'divine' when used to describe the 9 Black Greek letter org. It is lazy exegetical work to somehow insinuate that the use of the word divine, in this context, has anything to do with God. Sure, one can easily make that leap but I still would call it lazy. Divine was used to describe these Black Greek letter orgs., not in a godly manner, but rather to hold them up as excellent/delightful. For example, we've all had a meal that we thought to be divine or met someone that had a divine smile.
Well everyone must have their own understanding. Much Love to the brothers for making a decision that they were personally convicted on. My Fraternity puts it in this order.... 1. "Faith" 2. Family & 3rd Fraternity. It's up to you as a man to put that into perspective. Much Love...

As a christian member of one of these organizations, the activities of hazing as referenced in this video have been denounced by most if not every organization in the Divine Nine. Yes, it still occurs of course just like corruption still occurs in the church. However, because that was their experience and their perspective on their own journey doesn’t make it reflective of the organization as a whole or mean that you are less of a Christian for being a member. I will also add that some of these Bible verses are taken out of context, which is often a tactic used by cult leaders. I point that out bc he called the D9 a cult as if certain churches or christian organizations cannot be considered as such. In regards to the Alpha prayer, it states “Oh, Lord, may the spirit of fraternity… control our lives, etc”. For those having a hard time with its meaning, consider replacing the word fraternity with brotherhood. Is not the spirit of brotherhood a spirit of love and support? The second commandment states to love your neighbor (brother) as yourself. As a Christian, I take that to be a prayer for the second commandment. My overall point in sharing is, if you are here as a Christian and deciding to pursue membership in a greek organization consider both sides. What these gentleman stated in regards to their experience is valid. But again, that’s their experience. Base your decision on the purpose, mission and ideals of the organization first. If they align with your personal goals, seek out a chapter. If the chapter on your campus doesn’t align with your values or the values of the fraternity/sorority, you may want to wait to try for an alumni chapter. That is OK. As a Christian and a D9 Frater that is active in alumni chapter that regularly attends regional and National conventions and is active in church, take this video with a grain of salt. Evaluate your own motives and decide for yourself if joining a fraternity or sorority is right for you.

I've never liked any organization/group that resembled a cult. One of the main reasons people don't leave cults is because of ties with friends and family members who are also in the cult. Sororities and fraternities are no different because of this.
You're within your right to define or inappropriately define what a fraternity or sorority is to you. Likewise, those of us who are members of said organization clearly differentiate ourselves from cult members in that we don't worship any of our elected officials or the organization, itself. Friendly panel. I would like to see someone set up a debate between those who denounced their "former organization" and those still in their organizations. I grew up in a family where my father was in the home. A spiritual father. So, they shouldn't try to cubbyhole everyone.

Plus they had nothing on us as far as status really, my boys DJd all the parties on campus, one ran the campus radio station. We didn't need Fraternity juice to show out!! My entire immediate family are Nupes, uncle's who are Sigmas. I never needed to join, bonding with the fellas in my life was based on our own conditions. Not based on Greek or The Pike's Rituals in Free Masonry. I have to respectfully disagree with this. Everyone that is in my chapter are god fearing Christians, plus you were never forced to go through with any process. These men chose to do this for their own reasons. They don’t need to blame Greek life for what they didn’t get out of it. It’s pretty insulting to even try to compare something that was created for the advancement of colored people. Also created to give a support system to those who usually don’t have one. They joined for the wrong reasons. Even today as Kappas in my 40's we give scholarships to local schools and provide community service for families in the community. Nothing negative has come from being in a fraternity. They all got personal issues. Being cut from this cloth is not for everybody

I pray for my close friends. He's a pastor among other pastors I know who are proud active Greeks. And their wives are also. It has always puzzled me how they function in both worlds and are not wrestling with doing both. The spirit and the soul/body has to be wrestling. They miss services to attend Greek actives and me as a Christian and mbr of their church was really concerned and bothered. Also bringing Greek celebrations into the Holy sanctuary bothered me. I personally just didn’t like to have things define me. I saw so many people, my older bro included, become different versions of themselves, and most of it wasn’t for the better. Everyone i knew or kicked it with pledged, but I just couldn’t do it. I like the brotherhood they share and the community they have. But I don’t like “pledging” myself to anything. I’ve just always moved in my own lane. I get it, it’s college and everyone is on a journey to discover who they are. And there were years where I wasn’t walking with the Lord, but it just felt like a cult to me. A lot of the OGs took me under their wing when I started school, and I saw ALOT more than I was supposed to because of my bro, but I see them guys now and they spend a lot of time almost apologizing for who they were then. Imagine the basis of your friendship built on, what is likely, the most deplorable part of your life… while they pushed me to succeed, a big part of me lost respect for how these black men I looked up to, pledged allegiance to “GREEK” fraternities. I cannot agree with your comment. I was well known and popular well before I pledged Omega Psi Phi at the HBCU I attended. I always treated people with respect and got it back tenfold before I got any letters. I didn't pledge my frat for credibility. I pledged because I knew what my frat stood for and to help better my people. I shared this sentiment with other like minded brothers. I am also a proud Mason, Eastern Star, a Sublime Prince, and a Shriner. Not once did I take a pledge or oath to worship the devil. People are afraid of the unknown because they're on the outside looking in rather than seeking the knowledge to look in the right places for the answers they seek. The organizations aren't as secret as people think. Knowledge is power once one is educated.

As an HBCU student in the mid 80's I never understood the purpose of black frats other than for the popularity aspect of it. Anything these groups do in the community could easily be done without them. We are already segregated enough without doing it to ourselves.

So true, You cannot enter into these organizations without being checked by the holy spirit, if you're of God. Crazy, because there are religious people, like ministers and religious leaders that pledge. I remember my initiation, i felt in my spirit that i should run out of there because it appeared like a cult (let your no be your no) but I stayed because i allowed my flesh to win.(rebellious) I always felt weird with that delta ritual stuff we did during process. When I was in college God would not let me pledge a Greek letter organization no matter how much I wanted to. What the former member of Alpha Phi Alpha stated is totally on point at 7:30. I used to think that I was missing out but when I found out who I truly was as an individual and a man of the most high I was able to understand that my bond with him is the ultimate bond needed more than anything else in life. When I learned about the power of oaths and covenants as a man I was able to really thank God for shielding me as an undergrad at a PWU that looked at BGLA as something to aspire to

If you are joining a fraternity to just to belong or get some identity then you have bigger issues and should not seek a fraternity or any organization for that matter to fill the void. This is the problem with all those on this panel. They were looking to be made whole. They are not speaking on truth but rather their own individual experiences, which is interesting. I am member of a Black letter Greek organization (represented in this clip) and never experienced anything he mentioned. My chapter was/is Christ centered with nothing mentioned to the contrary (deities). There were actual bible verses used to encourages us during our process. I say all of this to say, that none of the negative experiences discussed in this clip are condoned, publicly or privately, by any of the divine 9 organizations...but chapters have some autonomy and may have inserted their own ritualistic slant (which is unfortunate). Lastly, I want to address the use of the word 'divine' when used to describe the 9 Black Greek letter org. It is lazy exegetical work to somehow insinuate that the use of the word divine, in this context, has anything to do with God. Sure, one can easily make that leap but I still would call it lazy. Divine was used to describe these Black Greek letter orgs., not in a godly manner, but rather to hold them up as excellent/delightful. For example, we've all had a meal that we thought to be divine or met someone that had a divine smile.

As a christian member of one of these organizations, the activities of hazing as referenced in this video have been denounced by most if not every organization in the Divine Nine. Yes, it still occurs of course just like corruption still occurs in the church. However, because that was their experience and their perspective on their own journey doesn’t make it reflective of the organization as a whole or mean that you are less of a Christian for being a member.
I will also add that some of these Bible verses are taken out of context, which is often a tactic used by cult leaders. I point that out bc he called the D9 a cult as if certain churches or christian organizations cannot be considered as such.
In regards to the Alpha prayer, it states “Oh, Lord, may the spirit of fraternity… control our lives, etc”. For those having a hard time with its meaning, consider replacing the word fraternity with brotherhood. Is not the spirit of brotherhood a spirit of love and support? The second commandment states to love your neighbor (brother) as yourself. As a Christian, I take that to be a prayer for the second commandment.
My overall point in sharing is, if you are here as a Christian and deciding to pursue membership in a greek organization consider both sides. What these gentleman stated in regards to their experience is valid. But again, that’s their experience. Base your decision on the purpose, mission and ideals of the organization first. If they align with your personal goals, seek out a chapter. If the chapter on your campus doesn’t align with your values or the values of the fraternity/sorority, you may want to wait to try for an alumni chapter. That is OK. As a Christian and a D9 Frater that is active in alumni chapter that regularly attends regional and National conventions and is active in church, take this video with a grain of salt. Evaluate your own motives and decide for yourself if joining a fraternity or sorority is right for you.

I would like to see someone set up a debate between those who denounced their "former organization" and those still in their organizations.
I grew up in a family where my father was in the home. A spiritual father. So, they shouldn't try to cubbyhole everyone.
I don’t think a debate is necessary because the word of God is right there is no other way around so when you know you have found your path to salvation do you have no need to argue with the devil or other spirits that don’t go along with what you were doing.

I believe that there's psychological abuse that goes along with joining these fraternities and I also feel that a lot of people that join don't make friends easily and this gives them a sense of belonging and brother and sisterhood and it's sad ☹️☹️⁉️

You are right!! I've always had buddies!! When I attended N C A & T in 89, I formed my own fellowship Dynamite Young Hustlers...Couldn't join those corny Kappas on campus. Plus they had nothing on us as far as status really, my boys DJd all the parties on campus, one ran the campus radio station. We didn't need Fraternity juice to show out!! My entire immediate family are Nupes, uncle's who are Sigmas. I never needed to join, bonding with the fellas in my life was based on our own conditions. Not based on Greek or The Pike's Rituals in Free Masonry. It's funny I was never disappointed but recently being engaged to AKA, I kinda felt a bit ashamed because she knew my family's Fraternity history. I almost joined a Grad chapter. I have to respectfully disagree with this. Everyone that is in my chapter are god fearing Christians, plus you were never forced to go through with any process. These men chose to do this for their own reasons. They don’t need to blame Greek life for what they didn’t get out of it. It’s pretty insulting to even try to compare something that was created for the advancement of colored people. Also created to give a support system to those who usually don’t have one. I pray for my close friends. He's a pastor among other pastors I know who are proud active Greeks. And their wives are also. It has always puzzled me how they function in both worlds and are not wrestling with doing both. The spirit and the soul/body has to be wrestling. They miss services to attend Greek actives and me as a Christian and mbr of their church was really concerned and bothered. Also bringing Greek celebrations into the Holy sanctuary bothered me. So I'm no longer a member of that church or demonination. I can't knowingly follow those serving 2 Masters!

I personally just didn’t like to have things define me. I saw so many people, my older bro included, become different versions of themselves, and most of it wasn’t for the better. Everyone i knew or kicked it with pledged, but I just couldn’t do it. I like the brotherhood they share and the community they have. But I don’t like “pledging” myself to anything. I’ve just always moved in my own lane. I get it, it’s college and everyone is on a journey to discover who they are. And there were years where I wasn’t walking with the Lord, but it just felt like a cult to me. A lot of the OGs took me under their wing when I started school, and I saw ALOT more than I was supposed to because of my bro, but I see them guys now and they spend a lot of time almost apologizing for who they were then. Imagine the basis of your friendship built on, what is likely, the most deplorable part of your life… while they pushed me to succeed, a big part of me lost respect for how these black men I looked up to, pledged allegiance to “GREEK” fraternities. Religion is a "fraternity." Masonry is rooted in religion. Christianity was a "cult" and still is. Fraternities are just organizations that build fellowship and networking. In addition, everything in this world is ideological; basically created from the human imagination. When people start bashing organizations for the sake of religion is problematic since secret societies originated from the practice of various religions. I cannot agree with your comment. I was well known and popular well before I pledged Omega Psi Phi at the HBCU I attended. I always treated people with respect and got it back tenfold before I got any letters. I didn't pledge my frat for credibility. I pledged because I knew what my frat stood for and to help better my people. I shared this sentiment with other like minded brothers. I am also a proud Mason, Eastern Star, a Sublime Prince, and a Shriner. Not once did I take a pledge or oath to worship the devil. People are afraid of the unknown because they're on the outside looking in rather than seeking the knowledge to look in the right places for the answers they seek. The organizations aren't as secret as people think. Knowledge is power once one is educated.
