Excellent top 5! Love the channel name and stories behind how you got the books! Totally worth the drive for the X-men 1 lol Just made my top 5 comic vid 🤙🏽
By far one of the best top comic books. This is why I love the videos you put out. It is not the value of the book, but the back story and pure nostalgic. Keep the awesome videos coming
I can't find any cool comics in my neighborhood. I believe Alex keeps hoarding all the lunch money comics. You both have some of the top videos on TH-cam. Lol with ❤. Thanks for the time and Passion you put into your videos.
Great choice of top 5 list. Not sure how I'd fill out my own top 5 personal books, but #1 would be easy. The traditional 1st wedding anniversary gift is paper, so for our first anniversary back in 2000, my new wife, who had a friend who owned a comic book store, got me my copy of Hulk 181. That book will never leave my collection, and I will never leave my wife's side. 🙂
Those are 5 books that should never leave your collection. Such great stories that as fellow collectors you always wonder what inspired each of us to fall in love with comics in the first place. Great books!
Thanks Mike for the tag and the shoutout those are some great books and stories behind them. When everyone else comes up with I'm going to have to find some time to make my top 5 list can't wait
Three cheers for Classic X-Men! The Chris Claremont/John Bolton backups are so good and so under-appreciated. Giant-Size X-Men 1 to Uncanny X-Men 143 are my definitive X-Men run, the one I grew up with and the one that made the most impact on me. ASM 161 is a fun story, and when the Punisher and Jigsaw show up in 162 it adds a whole new level. Great video and I enjoyed hearing the background to each of your picks, especially everything you went through to get your G.S. X-Men 1 - it gives a new meaning to "The Agony And The Ecstasy".
Thanks for the shout out homie! We’ll make ours this week. And yes Series 2 is also my favorite set of cards. And we’ll share GSX 1 as part of both our lists.
I love your honesty around reaction buying and how the stars aligned for your grail! I have a similar story. Thanks for taking the time to share such great content my friend!
Nightcrawler is one of my favorites too, mostly because it's a better depiction of a real german then in 99% of all superhero comics. When i got the dutch translation of the amazing spider-man 161, i was so happy to see him and spider-man teaming up. My all time favorite is Daredevil, so that issue is one i like very much too. Very nice choices. You being a x-men fan, there had to be some x-men related comics :-) . Loved the 2099 line, very cyberpunk meets superheroes. The personal stories add so much to your appreciation of these gems.
It’s 4:42am, and I’m finally getting to watch this as I have a very sick kiddo and wife…hooray night owls. Well Mike, I’m kind of speechless. You were in fact the inspiration for my channel so you can speak to that all day, but just how you influenced it I’ll have to explain in my video which I’ll make today/tonight. After a long day of work and family care this video absolutely made my day! Can’t tell you how much I appreciate your kind words and support within this challenge. I’m really glad you chose to show that Giant Size x-men #1 as it’s been on my list for a very long time and I stare at it a lot when I watch your channel lol. Love the story behind it, you definitely earned earned that one! Let me think about my books and I’ll give it a go this evening. Thanks again Mike!
You are very welcome and the first person I thought to tag. You deserve the attention and all your future success. I look forward to seeing your video and I hope the family gets better soon!
@@lunchmoneycomics thanks so much Mike! Sick kids are the worst, as a parent you always wish you could have been the one to get sick but rest and Saturday morning cartoons should help her. I’ll get on the video and have it out tonight, hope you’re out finding books in strange and unusual places!
I also grew up poor and loved comics. I had a lawn service at 7 years old that I kept going into my 30s bought my first truck cutting grass could have bought a way better truck if I wouldn't have spent so much money on comics. However no regrets. One of my top.5 is my ASM 300 I bought off the circle rack at a drug store. Wanted A conan 1 since 1980 just got one last year Also a top 5 . I traded a snowjob Gi joe figure for a old tomb of Dracula and maybe a snake eyes for a conan book in the 6th grade still have both those books.
Man I love your videos a lot.. I really appreciate what you show us and the passion behind it. The main reason is because you collect like the average person would. You don't have a channel that showcases expensive holy grails which are out of reach and most likely will always be out of reach for the average collector. Most of the channels on TH-cam showcase comics that are way too expensive and you cant relate with the creator at all. You make collecting comics seem "do-able" and I appreciate it. I would really like to see more indie comics if your into that sort of thing.
Good Morning Michael Great show as always, got me thinking, I loved your story on the Spider-man 2099. Great commitment, it has made you the man you are. I have two memories that remain with me. the comic racks in the little beachside village were my grandmother lived and the big box of comic in a hole in wall book shop in Newcastle, Stacks of comics in a dump box really , around 10c a swap. Now all these comics I speak of would be mega grails now Thanks for the memories. The Goldkeyfourcolorkiddownunda
Loved the stories. Makes me want to read that x-men 138. I’ll have to see if I have it! Congrats on that GSX1. I think it looks incredible for a 2.5. It has nice colors no major detractors on the cover and the cool custom label sets it off! Excellent video my friend.
Thanks so much! Those struggles definitely build character, though 12 year old me would have been quite embarrassed to know I’d share a dumpster diving story with the world 30 years later lol
Best video you’ve put out so far Mike! I was truly captivated by your stories and reminiscing about my own at the same time. Thank you so much for the content you create!
@Lunch Money Comics I have to agree with Ryan. The fact you can see how your stories and the comics themselves light you up. It's what makes you relatable, stay true and you could be on the top. Others I watch lost that spark (or never had it), you can tell it's all about the money to them.
You're the first youtuber I started watching when I began my comic collection. I havent branched out to others though. But I will look Alex and each his videos. Keep the content coming. And thank you for the videos.
Wow, I’m very happy you found me, but definitely check those others out! Most of them are much more knowledgeable than me regarding comics and have really great collections
Loved the story of collecting cans to get enough money to buy the Spider-Man 2099. It reminded me of my childhood (which was way before yours) when we rode our bikes and collected soda and beer bottles to redeem at the grocery store. That money usually went for sodas, pinball , baseball cards and the occasional comic book. But I didn’t take very good care of my comics or cards. Quite a few baseball cards ended up in the spokes of our bikes unless they were St Louis Cardinals. Those I kept; later to be thrown out by my mother. Thanks for the stories.
What a crazy random happenstance…I won an auction for Uncanny X-Men 138 not 5 minutes before watching this video! I’m stoked to read it now! It’s cool to see you shout out Alex the Comic Hoarder! I discovered both of your channels around the same time. He shops in my area quite a bit and turned me on to my favorite comic shop. I had no idea you two were connected. That’s super cool!

The best thing about the comic book BUST in the late 90s was I managed to get the first appearances of PHOENIX (XM 101) and DARK PHOENIX (XM 134) for less than 10 BUCKS EACH! Why? Because they brought Jean back or maybe the vendor was closing his store, I don't know but it was a coup for me because Phoenix was one of my favorite hero/villains!

Amazing Spider-Man 161 is my favourite sleeper key by far. Early Top 10 first appearances of Wolverine, Colossus, Night Crawler and The Punisher. Cameo appearance of Jigsaw and then Spider-man on top of it. I think it's a fantastic example of the Silver age merging with the Bronze Age. So many reasons to own this book. This is the first crossover of Wolverine after he joins the X-men. Love it and your videos.
Subbed Alex CH & Comichaulics 👍 I used to scrounge for aluminum cans also, was poor growing up as well, McDonalds was considered a special meal once a month if I was lucky

My Top 5 personal are Tales of the Green Lantern Corps #2 (my very first comic that started my comic book journey), Hulk 181 (worst condition ever, but loved it because it was mine -- and paid for it with lunch money!), TMNT #1 (3rd print also paid for with hard earned lunch money!), Batman 227 (love the cover), and Transformers #1 (signed by both cartoon voice actors).
Did you know that Nightcrawler was originally going to be in the Legion of Superheroes but DC thought he looked to demonic. So Dave Cockrum used him in Xmen
First story is awesome, best comic buy story ever!! Understandable #1. My all time grail is FF #1. I doubt I will ever get it or even see in person ever.
@Lunch Money Comics Sorry a bit more context might be needed. It's a great story to me because I was in the same boat as a kid. My collection mainly grew through trades though. My situation didn't allow for much in the means of getting money. Other then praying my dad had a little extra to spare for me and my sister. I have a similar story about NES games she borrowed....she and her husband ruined my super mario 2, Zelda and a few others. Plus ruining the system itself. Sisters got to love them lol.
Great stories, especially the one for Spiderman 2099 as I have sort of similar story on how I got my first NES console as a kid. Not to get into the whole thing here in the comments, but basically I was able to make a trade with another kid and when he called me to tell me his parents said it was fine it was during a snow storm and he said he bring it to school Monday. I remember that it was a Friday when he called and I didn't want him to have a change of mind over the weekend and I said nope I will be right there, and I walked to his house in a snowstorm made the trade shoved it in my backpack and trudge back home. There are more details about the story, but that was the jist of the stroy. I still have the NES system today.
1700, bought it when comics were still pretty high from the boom, but I forgot to mention it was EXACTLY how much cash we had at the house so it seemed even more meant to be. Still happy with it!
@@lunchmoneycomics It's a great book. I've always wanted one but never been willing to go too high on it. Congrats on the book and for making these great videos.
