    Sweet potatoes Leaves is healthy what are you talking about? Some countries from west African depends on sweet potatoes Leaves as meal. Though l am from a country that doesn’t know the value of sweet potatoes Leaves, but l have friends who introduced it to me and it’s my favorite sauce, especially when eating with my Rice.

      Sweet potato is from the Convolvulaceae or Morning glory family, i'm talking about the true potato from the Solanaceae or Nightshade family, the potato is not native to Africa but to South America

    He has read western literature on the subject and the solanine myth. Millions eat these leaves in India. It is healthy as a vegetable.
    Similar to a peanut allergy, if it doesn't suit you, don't eat it. Just don't perpetuate a myth.

      I agree. As a Bengali, me and my family have been eating potato leaves with no issues, but if a western person comes to our house and asks what the dish is, they start screaming their head off. Mustard oil too, it’s banned in the US for supposedly being harmful, but everyone eats it just fine, so I don’t know what these people are on about. I think westerners are ignorant of foreign cuisine, and are therefore more apt to make assumptions about it, and all the “scientists” are western centric and will more readily bash on things they are not used to.

    Heavy downpours wiped out veggie garden's this past spring and was called a state of emergency for farms where I live.
    Now it's mid summer/fall planting season our farms got flooded again. Absolutely disgusting.

    Brother, you are publicly denouncing one of our national foods. Look at the negativity brewing in the comments here. I eat the leaves all the time as have my ancestors and their ancestor. I have looked into the studies and there is no concrete correlation between eating them cooked and death/illness. Yes it is the night shade family and contains solanine but I dont think it is as dangerous as you make out. I think eating the leaves raw or improper storage of potato is more dangerous. Please confirm your sources..ie which Bangladeshi person has died or become ill as a direct result of eating potato leaves in the curry. I like all your videos apart from this one. Sorry and thanks

    • @MyFamilyGarden
      @MyFamilyGarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Unfortunately not everyone will like everything i say, this video is an important reminder for people if it helps keep one person safe then it's worth it. Alhamdulillah.
      It's not a national food nor has it been eaten by our ancesstors, it's something very recent, potatoes were only introduced into india in the 17th century and in to bengal moe specifically in the 18th century. They're not a native plant. Solanine is not removed through boiling or stir frying which is the way most people eat them, there is some evidence that deep frying can break down solanine so fried chips would be safer to eat than cooked leaves.
      I put the information out there, if you want to take it on board or not that's totally up to you.

    Oh, Man! I harvested my potatoes today (small to tiny ones... I don't know why they're not bigger), and I rinsed off the greens. I was going to cook some for dinner, but first I tested a couple of leaves. I washed them and ate two small potato leaves which left an irritation in my throat. I said, "This is not for me," and threw the rest of the greens out. Then I searched startpage.com to see if they're poisonous, and sure enough they are! Uh oh. Now what do I do?
    I ate some ginger root to try to digest what I ate. Then I called the poison control center. Since I only ate a tiny bit, there was nothing else I needed to do other that have a meal. The pharmacist said the irritation in my throat is probably all that's going to happen to me.
