LS Swapped Datsun 620 Review! My new Race Truck is pretty insane with the V8 swap ..until I broke it

- Today we do a short car review of my new LS Swapped 1973 Datsun 620 pick up truck. The review was pretty fun until I broke something, but this truck is crazy fast. The motor is an aluminum 5.3 L33 out of a late model chevy or GMC truck, and has a pretty choppy cam, some head work and a Holley Carb on it. The TH350 is nice, .....until it broke, but we'll figure that out some other time. I wanted a JDM style mini truck, but got a drag race monster instead. I'll have to do another vid at some other point talking about all the mods, since we broke and cut the review a little short. There's a ton of mods on this thing, and I didn't want the vid to be too long either.

my dad put a v8 in one of these in the 70's lol it was the talk of the town and still is. Back then they said it couldnt be done. He used to street race his occasionally it was a weapon.

#1 cause of upshift failure on a THM350 is loss of vacuum on the governor solenoid. The kickdown cable only causes downshift, upshift requires vacuum on that diaphragm. 700R4s, 4LE80's etc. use the cable for line pressure control. ThM350's do not. It's an easy fix.
I, too, have a Datsun 620 with a ls swap. Aluminum 6.0, ported 799 heads, milled Texas speed 228 cam, fast intake. 4l60e. Ford 9” 3.70 locker. Triangulated 4 link.just trying to figure out a mUstang ii front suspension with the 5 lug disc brakes. I originally set it up with the L33.
That’s awesome! Sounds fast! A mustang II front would be really nice and help with handling.

The builder actually reached out and said it might be the governor, which is kinda what I was thinking too. Shouldn’t be too hard to fix but the dang skyline is taking up my garage space currently while I prep for paint.

Thanks! It’s still on torsion bars up front. It’s a pretty tight fit with the exhaust but the builder got it all to fit pretty nicely.

I checked the cable over the weekend (finally) and it looked fine. I think it’s the governor that sometimes goes out on these transmissions. I ordered one that should be here by the weekend.
And I have been considering a cage. Just in case. I plan on keeping this one for a long time, so I’d like it to be safe….and maybe a little bit faster at some point.
I have a datsun 620 with the Blue Flame engine in it. My other 620 only has a 747 twa engine.

Our boy probably lost his shifter cable connection or the bracket that holds the cable slid so it's not sliding far enough to click the next gear. Or he needs a TH400 which is the ACTUAL bulletproof gm 3spd auto transmission for musclecars

And it’s a tight fit and looks like there was a bit of cutting to get it to squeeze in. Pretty sure the stock truck intake would hit the hood too, so that might need to be cut as well. I still haven’t looked to see how much of the trans tunnel was cut, but the fire was was cut and pushed back a little bit in a few spots. I imagine it’s a bit of work but it’s so much fun with the v8.

I’m not 100% sure as I did not do the swap, but most of the chassis parts are from a 720, and I think it’s mostly stock 720 stuff up front.

Yea. Reverse and first and neutral and park. I’m pretty sure it’s the governor but I haven’t had a chance to take a look at it yet. Been busy trying to paint the skyline so I have space in the garage again.
@@RobRabonPhotog call jimmy. He'll tell you. I believe he went through that transmission before he put it in the truck
Might be the solenoid on the back driver side. Vacume hose could have come loose
@@bensteward2288 he already texted me with some good info and even offered to send me a new one. Definitely a good dude. The part is pretty cheap though, so I wasn’t all that worried about it. It made for some good TH-cam content. Lol.

Yea. I fixed it shortly after this vid but I’ve just been busy with the day job and flying out of town. I made a couple shorts with it, but I still want to do another nice long vid with it before the weather gets too cold.
