How you can switch characters with allies

When you play with allies and you want to switch them you have to do the button "Tab"

How do you begin the assault? My soldiers just get stuck behind some sort of repelling barrier.

Wait for the cue to appear and then press E.

It is supposed to repeat itself again. Something to do with the theme of the futility of war and all that.
