This and "Lamb's Wool" will always have a special place in my heart. I have never fallen in non-platonic, love but these songs make me feel that way. Such sweet melodies and lyrics.
I haven't really seen anyone discuss this, but I really get vibes from The Beach Boys in this song, especially parts like 1:00 and 2:42. That was also one of his favorite artists as a kid so I find it cool that he probably incorporated that kind of sound.
It's no coincidence. Mark Foster loves the Beach Boys, and this is far from the first tribute he's done (see "The Angelic Welcome of Mr. Jones" from Supermodel).

For some reason when he extends the “lovers” at 3:30 sounds so great to me
I think static space lovers is actually a really sad song if you listen to the lyrics. Especially in the chorus.
I think talks about how they’re unsure of their relationship; they’re more distant than they used to be. They don’t want to face the reality that their relationship is falling apart, so they dance around the topic, hence the phrase “circling each other”.
They don’t want to face the stagnant, almost declining nature of their relationship so they decide to remain *static* space lovers, as a way to cope. Although deep down they know their relationship isn’t going anywhere they still decide to try to save it, despite the fact that they’re slowly growing apart, just as how the moon moves further and further from the earth while orbiting it. Which is another way to interpret the phrase “circling each other”.
I feel it too. Reminds me of the end of my old relationship. We tried a lot, we spent months going around in circles. But it's amazing how music still makes me feel so good.
