In the 1970's, the Amtrak Coast Starlight still used this same line between Davis and reconnecting to the mainline somewhere near Red Bluff. That long stretch was pretty slow going, as the track was not rated for much over 40 mph. Today, Amtrak bypasses this western track and goes through Roseville/Chico on much faster all welded track. If you miss the clickety clack of the old days, this is your railroad. It is unlikely this line will be upgraded for high speed because the local freight volume is pretty low. You have one freight run north and one run south by the same train on week days.
