Premier League strong? Yes, because of foreign players and managers and lots of money.

English football clubs in the former European Cup had a golden era winning six cups on the bounce from 1977 to 1982,, something no other country had ever achieved. And all before the foreign influx we see today. There were 9, 8, 8, 6, 8 and 8 English players in the winning final teams from 1977 to 1982 with English Managers; Bob Paisley, Brian Clough and Tony Barton. In fact to biasedly ignore the English greats in the Liverpool teams of Ray Clemence, Tommy Smith, Phil Neal. Phil Thompson, Emlyn Hughes, Kevin Keegan, Jimmy Case, Alan Kennedy, Ray Kennedy, Terry McDermott, Sammy Lee, David Johnson, and super sub David Fairclough etc, who were at one stage or another in these successful teams of Liverpool.

Then Billy Wright and Duncan Edwards 2nd and 3rd respectively in the next one in 57, Johnny Hayes 3rd in 61, and our great Jimmy Greaves 3rd in 63, Bobby Charlton 1st in 66, 2nd in 67 and 68 respectively, Bobby Moore 2nd in 1970, Kevin Keegan 2nd in 77, but 1st in both 78 and 79. Gary Lineker 2nd in 1986, Alan Shearer 3rd in 1996, David Beckham 2nd in 1999, Michael Owen 1st in 2001, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard were 2nd and 3rd in 2005.

@@stephenrichardson9540 Yes and a very good past ;) If you want - what some call 'proper' sport - and 'muscle', then it was fantastic our English rugby kids won the U-20 today - their 4th title (to the Kwi's on 6) in history of the event since it started in 2008. We won against France in the final on the 'Springboxs' turf in Cape Town, South Africa;. This means Emgland have now been in 10 finals - winning 4 - and runners-up 6 times, out of a possible 14 championships! (Kiwi's have been in 9 finals winning 6 ...We are the most finalists of all the nations ;)

Neville hits the nail on the head: it is so bloody hard to play without the ball. This has been the main factor of every England team I have watched since 1986. Southgate will get the blame, but every England manager since sir Alf had had the problem of getting his players to retain the ball so they have the legs to last. We will forever be hamstrung until our players are comfortable in possession with and also without the ball and end up losing against superior technical teams.

It’s a shame that Ian Wright cannot construct a sentence.

That speaks volumes "we have been coming from behind all competition" and wanting to win it for him when its his fault you lost it is irony at its highest.

    Two questions one answer:
1996: the shortest way out of Wembley?
2024: the shortest way out of the Olympiastadion?
    The Southgate.
