Thank you for a useful series of tutorials; I have worked through several of them. However, Base (Version: 6.4.7.2) will not open my new database due to absence of Java. The LibreOffice help files describe the problem but there is nothing of any use to help resolve it. Any advice?

Try Downloading java from here: java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
You may need to make sure LibreOffice can see it by choosing the version you just downloaded in:
Tools - Options - LibreOffice - Advanced - select Java runtime environment

Did you realize that this video series is now 11 ELEVEN years old?
It is nearly impossible to find current videos that actually work with current software whenever I look for it. But, in spite of ten years worth of advancements, and I watched LibreOffice go through some great changes, especially with their Writer,
YOUR BASE VIDEOS ARE STILL UP TO DATE!!!!!!!!
I want to let you know that I love that your videos are short, sweet and to the point. I don't think I have even given MS Access the time of day for over 25-30 years. Yet, yesterday, I was able to pick up Base, and using your videos, completely from scratch, design and build an application I wanted in just a few hours.
Your videos are short, sweet and to the point so I was able to go directly to the episode I needed to get every answer I needed when I needed it. I only had to Google one question and the answer was at the top of the first page in the summary.
I don't know if I'm praising you, which you deserve for your wonderful video series, or LibreOffice for being so consistent and keeping their Base software so backward compatible.
Have a great day and keep up the good work.
    I appreciate you
    Shabbat Shalom

If you want to build a Libre Office Base project, this is the spot. There are 94 videos that cover almost every thing you need to know. I taught myself to use Microsoft Access and spent many months developing a project 20 years ago. As I watch these videos they bring back the concepts and provide the steps I need to create a new project in Base an excellent program at a Frugal price. Thank you FRUGAL Computer Guy. Wish I had this info 20 years ago but You Tube didn't exist then (did it).

I really needed this series. I tried to learn databases a long time ago and got messed up with the multi table part and foreign keys. Just watched the short video on the primary and foreign keys and I knew I needed to watch the whole playlist on LubreOffice Base. I finally feel I will end up understanding it finally. Thank you! I see you have a lot of other great topics and I will be watching them as well. I feel a sense of relief already.

Wow! Such a useful series. It has just passed its fifth birthday but almost everything is still relevant, because of the way LO adds features but does not remove them.
As a Linux user by choice, but formerly trained on Ms Access I found the rest of LO intuitive but Base obscure in so many places.
I find it especially useful that you show exactly where to find each control on the page, as that is what I (personally) am having most trouble with.
    Warmly

Good eye to catch that! In the video, you will see that I try to save my table after typing in the last name of the second record, but before I typed in the first name (both required fields). LibreOffice incremented the auto value and tried to save the record (It couldn’t enter it at that time) after I typed in all required fields, I clicked save, it incremented (again) and added the autovalue to the record.

Fantastic!! I struggled a lot to make a data base (I'm not a computer guy, at all) untill I found your channel.
I love your pedagogy. In the past I tried some books but all of them or taught data base design from a rather teoretical view without specific software connection or explained how to use a software assuming one is already profiency in data base design.
With your material I've been introducing me in both subjects simultaneously.
I'm currently using LibreOffice 6; any chance you update the material to cover the new LO capabilities. Please.

This video clearly goes around the most obvious problem with Libre and OpenOffice base. Not being able to search fields on the form is so basic that Base is by no means a serious competitor to Microsoft Access - a developer simply can not make a user friendly GUI.

I spent several years using MS Access. Now I'm 74 and want to use Base as much for sentimental reasons as anything. I'm 74 and using LO 4.3 on a win7 box. Two questions: (1) you say Base is only the front end of a db, but I see relationships, queries, wizards, report builders etc. (2) due to prior warnings, I've 'turned off' java. IN YOUR OPINION, should I 'reinstall' java? if so, what ver?

why don't you use LibreOffice Calc? Set up columns with a name/title in the top row and fill in the information you have.
Suggested column name/titles; phone, last name, first name, street, city, zip, birthday, etc You can easily add information any time and sort by any column (last name) to put all in alpha order any time

Hi I was wondering if you could help me set up my data. I have two instructional works I want to compare. They have written similar steps in the instruction but there are differences. In addition, there are multiple components within each step. I was looking at your multiple tables video but am not sure if I could eventually make the correct relationships. For Table 1: I was thinking of creating 2 rows of Instructional Work #1 and then #2 and then giving each instruction work an ID; in the columns I was going to write out all the steps. But instead of writing the different components of each step as separate columns (like your work phone number, cell, home, etc) I was thinking I should create another table for each instructional step (Table 2). Then in Table 2 I would assign each row the instructional work ID so I could create a relationship between each table.
My question is: How do I create a unique ID? I don't have 2 variables like your phone number situation that together creates another unique situation that could become a new unique ID. I only have 2 instructional works like 2 employees.
    Help!
    -Kay

Hello Mr. Frugal. I need to create a customer searchable database for issues they may face and possible solutions (which will come in the form of recommended books and/or activities). Does that make sense? Would LibreOffice Base be a good place to create that database? I get the sense that it can receive information (currently in Excel) but my main reason in switching to a database would be because the Excel list we have is clunky for our customers. Thank you for your advise.

When I clicked save, and did not have all the required fields filled in, it tried to use the number 1 and could not. It moves on to number 2 - That is what happened to the number 1 in the video. Anytime you try and save a record without all the required fields filled in, you will loose an auto-populate number.

Just a note that you probably know but isn't varchar (considering giant databases) less efficient speed wise than a fixed char (assuming that you can determine a decent fixed length) due to random access?
Probably no noticeable difference for even medium sized databases but it just bugged me a bit to hear you say "efficient" rather than highly convient and with a non-noticeable speed difference (though this is a tutorial on Libre's Base not on how computers work internally so...forgiven of course :))

Hey, I really enjoy your work, you make it look so nice and easy.
I've come across 1 problem: in my data base i wanted to change the field type which appeared on the field name 'Criteria" from Number to Integer and it said "the column could not be changed, should the column be deleted and the new format appended?" I clicked on Yes and the criteria column dissapeared (the name is the same, but the content is from the next column).
I cannot add any fields, not even at the end. Is there any way to add the column at the beginning (where it used to be) or, at least, at the end? Hope you can help me! Thank you for all of your tutorials.

      Hi Andreea,
Did you make a backup of this database before you made your changes? Can you send me a copy of the database? If so, please send it in an e-mail to thefrugalcomputerguy@yahoo.com - Thanks.

Thank you for the videos, very helpful indeed, however I was looking for a video that would show me how to Auto-Open and then display in Full Screen a form within a database. I did not find it, is that possible in OpenOffice? Thanks!

Does anyone have experience getting leading 0s to stay on an address database. I have gotten so far using the videos but I am now stuck on entering zips

if you set the zip field to text instead of numeric, the 0's will be treated as characters and stay where you want them.

I have no idea if you are still monitoring responses here. I am getting a message straight away that no Java installation could be detected. I don't know what Java is, but there are so many Java products in the App Store I have no idea what I need to install. Please advise! Thank you.

Hi there. Please try using this link: www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
because that's where I downloaded the Java needed. Download the 64 bit "offline' version and run the database program again. I hope that helps.

Hello, I can not edit the field properties of the table after I created the table, and save it. Do you know how I can get access to modify the fields?
