I have so many files on my computer that I have named with the beginning being a date in the format YYYY-MM-DD. It makes so many things easier. That's why I was so glad to see Base can be set to use that format in a date field! Thanks for the video!
As an Air Force veteran, I quickly learned to use the "day, month, year" format when filling out forms. With a drill sergeant in your face, you don't forget your lessons. Nice informative video.
Great video and thanks for the information. Just a note, many teacher do this ime. They spend 2 seconds on an important point. Blink and a student will miss it. Changing field type 7:16
You know, you CAN speed up or slow down any TH-cam video. A lot of tutorials on TH-cam in general are a bit slow-paced, so I usually set it to 1.25x faster. And I only use 1.5x faster for the odd video clip where the narrator is super super sloooow. To vary the speed of the video, just click on the "wheel".
Great intro! I just subscribed to your channel. Thanks too for the editing! Your efforts to be concise by snipping out unnecessary video makes your submission much more watchable.
Thanks this was a REAL HELP. I was using this on Ubuntu 16.04, so there were some Very Slight Differences, but no problems. My only suggestion is that when you do an operation, slow down a bit so I can follow the keystrokes. I had to go back a few seconds and review it a few times
BRAVO! Well done -- I just opened, tried to use the Wizard, shut Base down, and deleted the saved d.b. EEK! Came here and BINGO! I know where and how to start! THANKS!!
Remind me again please about the licensening fee...Oh that's right Null! Thank you Libre Office developers , programer folk for this eccellent office suite.
cool video mate ! I always wanted to get started on base but all tutos I've found so far assume that you already know few basic (or using templates with is not very interesting..)
Thanks for that. I have never used Libre Office Base, so this was interesting, though I have used dBase in years gone by and I've programmed PHP to do Mysql. So, is Base compatible with Access databases? I think the European date system is better also because it is more logical. It starts with the smallest entity (day) and goes up to the largest (year) - as does the postal address system.
+technoboi0 I looked into Base/Access compatibility for another viewer, and unfortunately, while there's limited support for converting between certain versions of the two, I would not call them anything close to compatible.
+1 never understood why americans do it that way.. I actually think the best format would be YYYY/MM/DD remains logical but can be sorted out as it always increase.
+Guillaume Ouvrard --- I'm an American and I hate the way we order date components. I use YYYY/MM/DD in every case where it's possible to do so. ... I'm thirsty, I'm going to get myself a half pint of something to drink.
Isn't the European date standard an ISO standard? YYYY-MM-DD ? To my brain that is more logical than MM-DD-YYYY where the day or the month may get mixed. So is 10/01/2017 October 1, 2017 OR Jan. 10, 2017?
When I try to execute a SQL statement in the [Execute SQL Statement] Dialog box I keep getting the following error; 1; File input/output errorerror java.io.IOException: ..... // Any clues where I might get some help? thanks
Check your plug-ins. I had problems with TH-cam after I installed Privacy Badger'. After uninstalling PB, TH-cam on Firefox worked again...aside from the FIRST TH-cam video I watch in a session, but that is related to changes at TH-cam itself in the past few months.
Tx fella. BTW, wrt the date format... 12:12 the entire planet except the USA formats dates EITHER from big to small OR small to big, but not mixed up, like the usa... so, as you had it, day, month, year OR year, month, day, hour, second, frame (if video). No idea why the USA messes up the logical order!!
Hello from germany To the date: yes, we write it like that So first the day then the month and then the year Its confusing sometimes if someone is writing a date the american way and I read it the european way Like 5/8/2020 would be the 5th august but if its in the american way it would be the 8th may... Sorry if I made mistakes, i‘m not very good in english 😂😂
null is not nothing, it is a piece a data representing data that is missing or unknown, thus when you design the table you choose if fields are allowed to hold null data and if they should default to null.Null means data has been entered into a field and the field is not blank (contains no data) and is not waiting for data to be entered. Null data exists to prevent subtle ambiguities that would prevent queries working correctly e.g. if data in a number field is not there should a query treat it as zero? null markers clearly state the data is missing and the value is not zero, thus a query that averaged values in the field would return the correct result.
it might depend on the no:of bits needed for eg i have a 64 bit lap so it wud require a64bit jre i tried using a 32bitbut it doesnt 32bit is the usual oneso u have to specifically select the 64 bit jre
LIBREOFFICE cannot recognize the installed JAVA in IOS.( i have IOS Big Sur ( Intel Chip) and a MacOS Monterey - they both have Java installed !!!I I wasted hours installing, uninstalling and making sure JAVA is available. LIBRE still shows [ ❌Error] [ ❌Error] It shows this Error twice. Why doesn’t anyone pay attention to this issue? After on millions of Mac users would be grateful… I am ready to give up libreoffice.
Nice but when doing tutorial, use dates like Jan 20, 2012, Not Jan1, 2012 or Mar 3, 2013. 3 3 is too confusing can't tell month from day. Otherwise, good start!
You went through many functions with no explanation, or simply to fast. My version is different, so I have to figure out where to and what to d. Can I suggest, spend less time on explaining things that are not directly related in this specific lesson and use a task analysis to numerate the steps in sequence that we should follow. What is simple to you, is new to us and we are not as familiar with the processes to accomplish the tasks.
Thanks for the feedback, but I will not be modifying my formula in response to it. (It's ironic that you complain I spent too much time "explaining things that are not directly related in this specific lesson" while at the same time complaining about a lack of explanations and being unfamiliar with the processes; what you're actually asking is for me to make a video just for *you* showing exactly what *you* need to do, or in other words, for me to do *your* work for you. You use the word "us" to try and make it sound like there are other people with the exact same needs as *you,* which is almost never the case.)
You should be telling me to exercise, not just to eat more. And are you really insulting my appearance in a video six years after it was posted, rather than on a current video?
Any date format but the ISO one is inherently wrong. ISO: yyyy-mm-dd example 2025-01-21. Orders/sorts automatically, dash compatible with every system, can name files and folders this way. American system where month is first followed by day then year is perhaps "intuitive" for people who grown in such region where this is considered "normal" but come on. Just creates mess anywhere you go. Some European countries use the dd.mm.yyyy format which is not nice for sorting but at least the order is one way, from smaller unit to larger.
I personally prefer YYYY-MM-DD when using all numbers (partially for sortability like you said), and DD Month YYYY when spelling the month out (partially because it eliminates the comma that we normally need with the standard American format).
I have so many files on my computer that I have named with the beginning being a date in the format YYYY-MM-DD. It makes so many things easier. That's why I was so glad to see Base can be set to use that format in a date field! Thanks for the video!

To be precise the format is: DD MMM YY as in 24 JUL 19
I prefer YYYY MM DD, and use that to name files when their date matters. Thinks that change faster are to the right.
Great video and thanks for the information. Just a note, many teacher do this ime. They spend 2 seconds on an important point. Blink and a student will miss it. Changing field type 7:16
Thank you. Base applications are intimidating at start.
I've learned this stuff with MS a while ago in a class, but personally use Libre. Thanks for this tutorial! I find it very helpful. :)
Hey Jacob! I really enjoyed watching this instructional video. Thank you for making this clear and easy to follow. Aloha!
Great stuff. I really like your easy delivery style : fast and informative without being 'New York chipmunk on amphetamines' OTT ;)

Well done! Hope you do more on this database!
good job, good efforts to help others understand
Should I use Calc or Data for a simple database of just my usernames & passwords? I do have Bitwarden but I want to have a secondary backup. Thanks.
Thanks. Clear audio
Great video. But I cannot get LibreOffice to accept a number of Java programs for my Mac Pro. What am I doing wrong.
Thanks for the quick start.
Great Video & Tutorial!
Great Video. Starting from scratch.
How about opening / using a database of about 900 members originally done in access?
Can i create an id field with this format : 0001 0002 etc...?
Thanks!!!
See Tools - > Options -> Language settings for date formats and other locale settings.
Namaste 🙏
What do you do if you wanted to start the ID with 000001?
Thanks. Just what I needed
Thank you for this tutorial !
i prefer the date in the Asian format (2012/06/12)because it sorts into chronological order.
