He use to have a different watch in the past (not sure what brand) and the hands of the watch fell off after a few usage with the chainsaw.
The bracelet of seiko5 may be cheap in the eyes of watch enthusiasts, but I find it wears comfortably on my wrist, and I think it looks not bad at this price point, really. Of course, if one can spend $ to get a decent bracelet, then it will no doubt be a nice upgrade to the watch.
I have a blue dial SNXSS77 from Japan, so I was really interested to hear more about Seiko 5 watches. It would have been awesome to have a little more factual background and history around the series. Still, thanks for reviewing it.

Which is OEM version of Seiko 4R36 movement ) I have a hacking, hand-winding and 45-hour power reserve. The local watchmaker who's done movements swap is a skilled person. That said though, these are great value for money - my original 7009 was about £95 in 1983 so these priced about the same 37 years later makes them a good buy. They do have the look, the quality and reliability. I might certainly buy one.

I am wearing the very same Seiko 5 watch right now. Great value entry level automatic. The bracelet is good as one should expect at the price point. The white dial Seiko 5 looks even better. Many dial colors to chose from. I am very pleased with the look, feel and quality of the Seiko 5..
Had a couple of these, really good automatic piece for the price. The accuracy for me had been decent, gotta keep the watch almost fully wound for it to keep the best time. The absence of hand winding didn't help, but for the price I'm pretty happy with them
In most ways, the simple Seiko 5's are the mechanical analogue equivalents of Casio F-91W. The only features of the F-91W totally absent from the Seiko 5's are the alarm, the stopwatch and hourly beep.
Seiko 5's are ice cold. While the bracelets leave much to be desired the watches are usually really great in my opinion. I have an SNKK29. I got this one because I had been avoiding seiko for a while because I always saw my grandfather wearing a seiko (not that that's bad or anything, but I am usually one who really would like to avoid copying a style that fits someone I know). I still had to try seiko out, I had 14 watches in my collection and none were seikos. I also kept hearing all the praise from reviewers. I decided to buy the SNKK29 because I had never seen anyone wear it before and it was so odd in its color that I thought it would be a good piece for the collection. I ended up enjoying it a lot with more luck on a nato strap than the original bracelet. Overall it was very impressive for the price and something I didn't have to sell.
I have the black dial version and love it! I have it on a black leather strap from colareb. I also took it to a local watch shop and had him check the timing and its running at +3, not bad all considering! I think its absolutely ice cold
I love your honest and fair review of this watch. I have considered this for months but a few things do concern me that you brought out. First thing is the blue dial being a bit dark. I've purchased other watches from other brands where the blue looks brighter online but when you get it it's almost closer to black. Keep up the great work!
Mike Hynes I have the same watch and If you live in sunny climes the blue dial will be amazing. It shines a really rich, vibrant shade of blue in direct sunshine or under good lighting. It’s my favourite coloured dial out of all my watches.
I own this same exact watch. After every watch I've ever owned ended up breaking, I decided to buy this one. I just wanted a watch that didn't break and didn't look like shit. I also own a somewhat vintage quartz movement Seiko that needs a new battery. After owning two now I can say they don't quit. They're fashionable workhorses so to speak.
I bought my seiko 5 before seeing your vidéo. I know nothing about watch but apparently I can spot the best quality/price ratio when i see it! My grandparents have had their seiko (quartz) for 50 years so I really trust this brand
I really consider buying one of those because they are not super big, so perfect for a women wrist! It is such a struggle to find good affordable watches for women that are not trash
I have the Seiko SNXS79 and it’s awesome ! Swap out the strap to a leather or the bond nato and even better! I’ve even have Rolex owners comment on it! Try to get hold of one yourself!
I have the S77 blue dial version, and it’s great. Even better with a brown leather strap! I prefer it over the S79, I have seen it in person but I feel the grey is a bit dull.
As someone said, "the Seiko 5 is kind of a 'gateway drug' to the world of automatic watches." My first was the Explorer-esque black dial SNKE63 with white 6,9,12. My next was the black dial SNKL23 purchased right after Hodinkee proclaimed it, "A Seventy-Five Dollar Watch That Looks Like A Million Bucks." Both are great pieces that were less than $75 shipped each. (More $$ now.) So I say 'Ice cold' assuming that means the best.
I am surprised that nobody has madea video comparing SNKL43K1 and SNK793. Wich one is the best, the prettiest blue, sunburst, STRAP LUG EXACT MEASUREMENTS and so on. P.S.: Close shoots to the face of the watch and not again half of video waining about the strap, thank God! Well done!
I've got a Seiko 5 in gold ( 5 micron I belive - still good ) , it was given to me in 1968 ... yes , last century ..old millennium. ! Not worn much , 3 services in 52 years . Just got it back last week from a service , still looks fantastic and going like a dream , cost $ 30 AUD in '68 . ! Just purchased an SPB 053 , got rid of the strap and refitted with a Strapcode Super ' O ' . So now the Seamaster can go in the drawer for a while. Advice from an old guy , buy the best that you can , reward yourself sometimes . We are a LONG TIME DEAD .
I have Seiko 5 SNK809 as my first mechanical watch. It's simple, nice, and i personally think it looks good on my 7+ inch wrist. It is not a flashy watch by any means, but it's versatile af. If you need a dress watch, just change the strap 👌
Bit late for the party, but my wife and I each has a Seiko 5. Hers is the SNKL15 (white dial, originally my first Seiko) while I now sport the SNKL23 (black dial, her wedding gift to me). Both have the exact design except for the color, which makes great as a couple watch. :) and both are under 80USD 😁
I like the white day wheel, I look forward to when the black letters turns to a nice Azure blue on Saturdays. The recessed crown is probably the nicest design feature on any watch.
The Seiko 5 is kind of a "gateway drug" to the world of automatic watches. The movement is basic, the bracelet terrible and the crystal is only mineral glass, but the watches have a certain charm and paired with a good quality replacement strap, pretty versatile for smart or casual wear.
@@Ni3ls118 isn't hardlex just a Seiko trademarked version of mineral crystal? I'm not sure if it has any particularly special properties vs standard mineral glass.
@@Jon867 Good remark, I'm not sure either. It's supposedly a little more scratch resistant but I don't think there's much difference between hardlex and a standard mineral crystal.
Very honest review Ben . I put my Sieko 5 on a nice black leather strap . I moved up to better watches because I like to hand wind them ( still automatic ) I also prefer the crown at the 3 o'clock . Have a look at the Hamilton khaki field automatic . It is my new watch . I'm happy you have this new channel . Thanks .
I own the SNKL23, SNKD99, SNK803 and just ordered the SNXS79. To be honest the one picked in the video is one of the less appealing ones. Replacing the bracelets with nice straps or solid bracelets will transform them into much more expensive looking watches. Please checkout the SNKL23, SNXS79 and perhaps SNK393.
I had a 7009-4040 blue face in 1983 it was one of the best watches ever, I have recently managed to find some originals, I did buy a modern 7070 about 2010, it didn't seem as nice as my old one although it was a nice watch.
I have two Seiko 5's. One is vintage, marked made in Japan, the other i got last year. its made in China, i think... but its Seiko movement. it's excellent,!
My favorite Seiko 5 is the sarz005. I love that watch. The strap is junk but throw it on a leather strap with white stitching. It's a fantastic everyday t-shirt and jeans watch that's not a diver.
I have an SNXS77, after I sold my SNK793 :D It has much nicer case shape, lugs, markers and hands ;) Although at 19mm it is sort of hard to find straps for it, but once you do, it looks noticeably better than a skinny 18mm one.
Do you have intel that suggests that this and other Seiko 5s are being discontinued? If not, I think you may be confused by the fact that the SKX007 (and its siblings) were discontinued and soon thereafter "replaced' by a new line of Seiko 5 Sports watches. So the only thing that was discontinued was the SKX line; I've seen nothing to suggest that this SNK793 or any others in the Seiko 5 line have been discontinued.
I like the black/red second variant a lot. It is dressy/sporty and the matt/sunburst difference stands out very well. It is one of my favourites. The white silver one is a bit of a let down. My other favourite is the snk615 with a lovely bright blue yellow colour scheme and sporty appearance. The lume is delicately placed inside the hour indices, in stead of just on top of and it has a special marker for 12 o’clock, helping you at night to not rotate your watch while reading. You got to love the bracelet though and be lucky with it’s quality, or you will find yourself filling hair-pinch slits with nail polish or super glue.
Hi Ben thanks for your reviews! Yours are always great and entertaining, never boring! I think Seiko 5 are cool (I would add a plus, so Cool+ if I can)! I own 2 and they are fantastic! I would find it icy cold if it was not that my favourite are Orient and Casio! 😁😁😁
Love those Archie clips. Also... £300 for the new Seiko 5 range. Wow. Anyway, back on point: like you I find this particular watch a little too conservative, but if you're talking about Seiko 5 as a range, I'd have to put it in cool because I think it's fair to say they have something to suit, perhaps not everyone, but certainly most people. My first mechanical watch (only back in 2016, mind) was a Seiko 5 - more of a field watch variant - and, although it doesn't get much wrist time from me these days, I still think it's a cool piece. It would certainly be really tough to find something better for the £80 I paid. Great value for money.
I bought this and the snkl45. Returned the snl45. Very similar but when you compare them side by side the snkl45 looked very cluttered with the extra long indices and hands and even more so considering the size of the case. On the 793 everything seems to be spaced out evenly balanced. The 45 is also a bit thicker (bulkier) than the snkl793/795. Also imo the dauphine hands on the 45 are a bit feminine on an already thin wrist.
I bought the "sea urchin" as my first mechanical watch, very good seiko watch, solid band with hollow end links. It is similar to the Invicta you pictured here.
The Seiko 5 watch is definitely ice cold. I own three of them. The SNK795K1 which I have has a black dial with black day date window and a red second hand. It’s very nice 👍🏻
I have an orange face Baby Monster that hacks and hand winds. 4R36A movement. Got it for a good price at $70 US. It's a big baby, though! Gotta have the wrist to pull it off. I think the Seiko 5 value is all about the movement. I love mine, but if it had the movement that the watch in this review has I'm sure I'd never wear it. I'll still give it a low cool, though.
Good review! In between cool and uncool imo. The size is absolutely perfect for you. I’ve got the same watch but hardly ever wear it. Like you, the design doesn’t quite work for me. The indices also look too big for the relatively small dial size imo. Not only that but the movement is very imprecise compared with the newer Seiko 4R36. I regulated mine but it soon went way out again in terms of accuracy. Ps the dark blue dial looks amazing in direct sunlight but you don’t get much chance of that in here in the UK!
I had one but flipped it. Based on my three years of collecting Seiko I would steer people away from Seiko not made in Japan. I've had issues with two of five watches that were not made in Japan. My SNK793 had a particle at the 10 o'clock and scratches on the dial. My SRPC91 Save the Ocean Turtle has a misaligned chapter ring and a minor defect on the dial. I am a Seikophile but steer clear of K models.
The Seiko 5 series has a lot of good watches. It's a great first watch for someone getting into automatics. The 7S26 isn't the best movement (although it's reliable), and the bracelets are crap, But put it on a nice strap and it's a fine first automatic. :)
It looks just like my 5€ Pulsar 2001 quartz from the flea market, which I love, the Pulsar has nicer, elegant hands. The band was way too short, so I put it on a NATO. And on the Pulsar the crown is on the right spot.
I have the same watch but with the grey dial , great watch , strap a bit tinny but comfy , love it , as featured on my channel also have a 7002 , the one before the skx also have the 5 sports ,, paid 95 quid for my seiko 5 cheers shane uk 🇬🇧
I bought a Vostok and Seiko 5 at the same time. The Vostoks loses to the Seiko 5 in several areas, its case is plated brass vs stainless steel, plastic crystal vs mineral crystal, has very weak lum (Seiko lum is fantastic) painted dial vs applied markers and logo, its metal bracelet was a hair puller and it stopped working after less than a year. Love the look, engineering and history of the Vostok but its materials & build quality is lacking when compared to a simalar priced Seiko. I am pleased to know the Vostok you received is a good one.
Mike Wysko actually i ruined my vostok by dropping it on the ground lol. sorry to hear about your bad experience though. 1. while the komandirskie line is chromed brass, and amphibia bezels i believe used to be chromed brass, amphibia cases are stainless steel, as are the cases of other vostok models 2. my scuba dude dial did have applied indices, though i replaced it with the painted sailboat dial you got me on the bracelet and lume though. fyi meranom does offer a better quality bracelet for about $25.
@@michaelnewman7248 Thanks for the info. Vostok watches look good and are comfortable on a NATO strap. I also have to give the Amphibia credit for its superior water resistance. I was disappointed when it stopped working. I considered buying a replacement movment for my failed Amphibia but am worried about getting another lemon.
Hey Ben! What are your opinions on this watch TimexChesapeake TW2P77200 does it look good? And what about the materials and the movement, are they reliable and solid for a couple of years?
Cool. Though, I have this exact watch and it is currently with Seiko to be repaired as it arrived with a broken hairspring/balance wheel, so can't recommend it without caveats.
Do you find the brushed sides ugly on the case or not really? I like this watch but i’m kinda bothered on the brushed sides of the case do you think it blends well with the polish top case? O really need your opinion about this
I have a Longines hidroconquest(40mm) and a seiko 5 gold texture black dial jubilee brasalet . I use my SEIKO 5 every day . Is smaller (37mm) thinner and MOST COMFORTABLE!!! I think my Longines is heavy, bulky, ETA is not IN-HOUSE . I feel my seiko 5 is a $1000 and my Longines a $120.
Would you happen to know when this was probably first released? My father gave me his snk794 version with a 7S26A movement. All it tells is it was released between 1996 to 2006. He doesn't quite remember when he got it. Maybe late 90s, is that possible?
No hacking just means that the wearer is living in the future ;) Just received this same model in black, and it’s looking quite smart on a 20 dollar engineer bracelet from Amazon.

I have the Seiko SNXS79 and it’s awesome ! Swap out the strap to a leather or the bond nato and even better! I’ve even have Rolex owners comment on it! Try to get hold of one yourself!
Steven Harper i agree that gray dial with those lumed indices just look amazing rivaling higher end watches.
I have the S77 blue dial version, and it’s great. Even better with a brown leather strap! I prefer it over the S79, I have seen it in person but I feel the grey is a bit dull.
ice cold, proud snkl23 owner!
Well done!
I have three Seiko Fives, one sports, one vintage and one dress. They all get equal care and attention as my solid gold Vacheron Constantin Patromony.
Is it mineral or Hardlex?
@@johnnyc0882 Hardlex usually
@@Ni3ls118 isn't hardlex just a Seiko trademarked version of mineral crystal? I'm not sure if it has any particularly special properties vs standard mineral glass.
@@Jon867 Good remark, I'm not sure either. It's supposedly a little more scratch resistant but I don't think there's much difference between hardlex and a standard mineral crystal.
Dark Blue Is gorgeous and far smarter than light blue. Fantastic review.
Aha! I have seen that you've gone for the Seagull 1963, great choice! Can't wait for the unboxing/review🙌🏼
Hi Hans, I haven't decided yet! That watch on my wrist is actually something slightly different, which I'll be also looking at soon!
@@BensWatchClub Oh, well now I feel dumb😅. Anyway, good luck on your decision, whatever it may be
Very honest review Ben .
The watch you're introducing is interesting, but can I have the information of the cream dial you're wearing?
They're both so pretty!
I had a 7009-4040 blue face in 1983 it was one of the best watches ever, I have recently managed to find some originals, I did buy a modern 7070 about 2010, it didn't seem as nice as my old one although it was a nice watch.
I had a Seiko Divers but on the oem jubilee bracelet. I sold it and I just ordered a Seiko SNKL41! Love Seikos automatics and quartz movements!
Ice cold! For the money it is in the top of that range for an Automatic.
I have two Seiko 5's. One is vintage, marked made in Japan, the other i got last year. its made in China, i think... but its Seiko movement. it's excellent,!
I agree on the need for darker date window on dark dial watches
Those white squares seem to cheapen the look, somewhat
My favorite Seiko 5 is the sarz005. I love that watch. The strap is junk but throw it on a leather strap with white stitching. It's a fantastic everyday t-shirt and jeans watch that's not a diver.
SNKS77 Same Watch harder to find , nicer blue with much better lume. I've been eyeballing them myself..... lol 😁
I have an SNXS77, after I sold my SNK793 :D It has much nicer case shape, lugs, markers and hands ;) Although at 19mm it is sort of hard to find straps for it, but once you do, it looks noticeably better than a skinny 18mm one.
Bought the same.. can not wait . I love the UFO case, be got it in gold snxl72 perfect 70's disco/gangster watch😂🍻
Nice and affordable watch. Such a shame they are being discontinued and replaced for an overpriced and downgraded version of the SKX.
I do think that new line is too expensive, has nothing on the original SKX
Do you have intel that suggests that this and other Seiko 5s are being discontinued? If not, I think you may be confused by the fact that the SKX007 (and its siblings) were discontinued and soon thereafter "replaced' by a new line of Seiko 5 Sports watches. So the only thing that was discontinued was the SKX line; I've seen nothing to suggest that this SNK793 or any others in the Seiko 5 line have been discontinued.
I got a Seiko SNKK11K; Blue dial with gold details. Amazing line of watches, theres a design for everyone.
Great honest review
Not related to the video but love the watch you’re wearing while reviewing the seiko !
Picked up the SNKL23 not too long ago and I love it. Looks just like the SARB033. Swapped out the bracelet for a nice leather brown leather strap.
COOL
I wear SNKL79 blue as my daily driver and it's perfect for that inhave other options but for me it's nice to wear it.
This one was also my first Seiko and first automatic. It is amazing for this price, and the quality is good for this price point.
Just bought it. It's my first automatic watch. It's lovely ! Can't wait to see how it will hold after the months
It will hold for years !
mine is 3 years old and keeps +3 seconds a day. 7S26 is an insane movement for the price
I own the same watch but my personal opinion is that the Seiko SNXS79 and SNXS77 look better on the wrist.
I actually located a SNK809 for less than $70.00, and it has been great for three years!
I have an SKX009 with a jubilee strap. Love it.
Try the SNKL23 and the SNK393 that's the best looking seiko 5's
@Rex Erection go for it 😁 the snkl23 is beautiful it has a weird lug width tho 19mm
snxs77 UFO case😍 , snk357 incredibly comfortable case! and the gold snxs77 pure 70's disco watch😂
Thank you for a great video. You are very professional and easy to follow. I subscribed and set notifications on. I look forward to your new videos.
The Seiko 5 series has a lot of good watches. It's a great first watch for someone getting into automatics. The 7S26 isn't the best movement (although it's reliable), and the bracelets are crap, But put it on a nice strap and it's a fine first automatic. :)
My husband has had his Seiko 5 for 18 years and still ticking. Gains five minutes a week since purchase. :)
My vote on this Seiko-- middle-to-upper end of cool... a versatile, reliable & attractive entry-level piece that won't break the bank!
Hello! What is the difference between seiko snk 793 and seiko snk 793k1
Seiko’s sadly are underrated. Ironically, they’re a high quality, fairly accurate time piece.
seiko 5 is COOL, ben. if you want a good intro to mechanical watches you should get a Vostok
1. while the komandirskie line is chromed brass, and amphibia bezels i believe used to be chromed brass, amphibia cases are stainless steel, as are the cases of other vostok models
2. my scuba dude dial did have applied indices, though i replaced it with the painted sailboat dial
you got me on the bracelet and lume though. fyi meranom does offer a better quality bracelet for about $25.
That's unfortunate mate, where did you purchase from?
Do you find the brushed sides ugly on the case or not really? I like this watch but i’m kinda bothered on the brushed sides of the case do you think it blends well with the polish top case? O really need your opinion about this
Hello! What is the difference between Seiko snk 793 and Seiko snk 793 k1 models
What watch are you wearing Ben?
I still wear a Seiko 5 from 1978 which is still going strong. Not original bracelet though.
Makes me miss my SNK789....RIP My lil white prince
Maybe I can find one on sale this weekend?! 😊
I lost my seiko 5 exactly like that one :( miss that little bugger so much!
I think the most versatile on this snk line is the white dial one the 789 i think?,
what do you think?
This was, indeed, my first mechanical watch. On eBay, I see some of these listed as just SNK793. What does the K1 indicate?
That’s what I’m wondering
I’m sporting SNZF15J1 aka the sea urchin, and I mod the living daylight out of that watch. The only thing left untouched are the movement and dial.
No hacking just means that the wearer is living in the future ;) Just received this same model in black, and it’s looking quite smart on a 20 dollar engineer bracelet from Amazon.
