    For those of you new to the hobby, Seiko a few years ago was like, we are offering way too much for way too little, so they started offering way less for way more. Your best affordable options are now with a Japanese company under the same group, called Orient.

    • @jannisn454
      @jannisn454 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Perfectly phrased. Seikos reputation for selling watches easily worth double what they ask for it is definitely gone, you get way less for your money nowadays.

      @@jannisn454 True 100%, my SARB017 Alpinist cost $400 around 7 years ago and the SARB line was crazy in the value prop. The new Alpinist costs $725, is larger, thicker, and has a mismatched date with a cyclops that just doesnt look great. Same thing with these seiko 5s, you used to get them for under $100. Sure they didnt hack but they were 1/3rd the price.
      Sadly I wouldnt really recommend Seiko as the entryway to watches anymore. There are some really cool microbrands Id much rather go to for the sub $500 category

      I tend to agree with this comment. I've owned several Seiko's over time (still own two, one being an SKX007) and I like them, I just don't like them enough to buy them any more when other, better, options are available. And when you can buy an Orient Kamasu for sub $300, given what that watch offers, its hard to make an argument for a Seiko instead.

    Bought the SRPE 55 (black dial) from you and it’s fantastic! Runs about +15- +20 sec a day which I really don’t mind at all-keeps me fashionably late as opposed to horrifically late-and the watch is classically handsome, especially on a Bond style nato strap. Great costumer service from you guys too, if I pick up an Orient or Seiko 5 GMT I’m coming to you first!

The bracelet is actually very good and I have no intention of swapping it out for an Uncle Seiko or similar. The clasp micro adjustment could be better but hey. Uncle Seiko has a coupe of additional dial options if you want to mod it. I’m leaving mine stock as it scratches that “Explorer” itch quite well. My other Seiko’s don’t get much wrist time since buying this! Same for my Tag and Constant etc. great watch, great size, great looks, it just works!

      If you want accuracy get a quartz watch. Almost every mechanical watch , and certainly in this price range, will be off at least a few seconds a day, usually less than 20 seconds--but not always. Even very expensive COS certified mechanical watches may be off around 5 seconds a day. People get mechanical watches because they prefer them, (for no logical reason I can see), but we enjoy them. I think Teddy recently did a video in which he described accuracy as an overrated feature--but of course that is a matter of personal preference.

    Like some of the other commentariat, I am not sure what the point of this Seiko is, at least not for me. I bought a Seiko 5 Sport (7S36-03J0) back in 2013 for maybe $129 US and it has worked just fine ever since. I don't think I would pay around $300 for a Seiko of this type. For a nice dive watch at a budget price, I would go with a Vostok. I have 2 and they work just fine as a field watch. For a bit more you can get a Hamilton Khaki Field variant. Or as someone mentioned upthread, you can get a nice micro brand somewhere in this price range with a Sapphire Crystal. or something like a basic Laco Flieger with a Miyota movement. Or maybe a Seagull 1963 for something that is a bit dressier, less expensive and works just fine.

    This is one of those rare occasions I respectfully disagree with Teddy regarding the new Seiko 5 line. I own 3 Seiko watches: SNZG11K1, SRPE61K1, and 1 additional with a 6R movement. I also owned another watch with the 4R movement. I have found the 7S movement bulletproof while the 4R has been repaired often. My definition of often is every 1.5 years the movement breaks on me. I also find the fit & finish and the wrist strap on the older SNZG better than the SRPE. To me is seems Seiko decided to go cost cutting on the next generation (current) Seiko 5 based on the watch I own.

      I'll help. It's assumed that if you are attempting to read the time in low light or in the dark that you are not going to be concerned about pinpoint, to-the-second timing. The main hands will tell you the time and a lume pip is included on the second hand simply to show the movement and let you know the watch is running...your welcome.

    Also, if you're buying a mechanical automatic watch for accuracy at this price point, you're kidding yourself, sure you might get lucky and have one fantastically well regulated straight from the factory, but you probably won't 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Seiko coutura is a truly underrated watch here that rarely gets a mention....chronograph, perpetual calander, alarm, solar powered (you name it and the feature is there), sapphire crystal with a great balance of sportiness and dress styling at $500

    Do younger people even wear mechanical watches nowadays, maybe it’s just me but I rarely see it . Normally I see them wearing an Apple Watch ⌚️ or something or that’s quartz.

      Even old people are not really wearing mechanical watches.I seen most of them in their high tech smart watches.

    I’ve always held myself from pulling the trigger on the Sieko 5 line because of the hardlex I own 4 watches and besides my work watch ( g shock) they all have sapphire crystal I won’t buy anything mineral crystal and I kinda feel the same way with hardlex am i wrong putting them both in the same camp?
