I find it twistedly ironic that bondrewd essentially gave everyone what they wanted, including himself, just not how they wanted it. He gained the blessing of the abyss, successfully replicating Nanatchi, but died almost immediately. Reg learned more about himself through him, but lost an arm. Nanatchi freed her mind from Bondrewds trauma, but couldn’t ultimately stop his plans and he will still always be with her. Riko finally got her own white whistle, but had to lose Prushka to get it. And poor Prushka gets to go on her adventure with her papa and friends, as she is now Riko’s white whistle, and Bondrewd can see everything that Nanatchi sees, so he is there too. Such a uniquely monstrous person...

I think just about all the major characters(And some of the minor ones, like Ozen) are really well written as well, it's just that Bondrewd is an antagonist who is given the same amount of authorial attention and characterization that the main three characters are. I think that's part of why the writer decided to include that insane panel of Prushka's dream of him joining them on their adventure, what, at least in her mind, could have been, and maybe the writer's love of the character as well.

Bondrewd is such a good villain. He's not even malicious, he just has a very twisted view in the sense that EVERYTHING can be sacrificed to further his aims up to and VERY much including himself. He didn't show fake warmth to those children, he really cared for them and even when he used them he remembered what personality each one had.
Even when the body he worked so hard to attain was destroyed he was still courteous to Nanachi, giving her his best wishes. No hard feelings whatsoever.

The thing i like about Bondrewd is that, he is the crystallization of curiosity. He is Riko's curiosity taken to its most extreme. Its a thing i didn't see included, but is interesting is how Bondrewd is seen as a hero to the people on the surface. Hunting powerful monsters and preventing stuff like the creatures that was burned from spreading. And making a base in the 5th layer that lets people go explore the layer, or move on to the then inviolable 6th layer. It's a thing of the White Whistles holders being heroes to the people as well as monsters of the Abyss.

  • @deliii395
    @deliii395 3 ปีที่แล้ว +185

Okay the thing about bondrewd that the movie doesn't mention but manga does is that, after multiple divisions of his consciousness, bondrewd's real actual personality has disappeared, what is standing as bondrewd now is something entirely new, and the only aspect this new personality has retained is that of bondrewd's scientific intellect and curiosity. So now bondrewd after using the blessing of the abyss multiple times has become just one of the monsters of the abyss. And if you think about it, he is at the forefront of the exploration of the abyss, literally lives in the deepest part of the abyss. If it wasn't for everything he did, his experiments noone would've been able to explore the abyss as well as some have. He, unlike every other white whistle, didn't sacrifice someone else but gave up his own self to move forward. So you can't even call him a hypocrite for using others for scientific progress, he used himself too till the point that he was no longer himself.
    Also
I cry everytime at that part where bondrewd picks up a wailing prushka and holds her close to his chest....just seeing bondrewd be such a loving parent and then do such horrific things to prushka just kinda reminds me a lot of toxic parenting where parents make the kids incredibly dependent on them, give them love in the hopes for tieing them down...it just hit home. I bawled my eyes out because how could he!? How could bondrewd raise prushka up so well, give her all the love only to use her, limit her future and do something so horrible to her. And the worst part was prushka loved bondrewd from the bottom of her heart, to her bondrewd was everything. That whole segment with the music just makes my soul cry.

The move adaptation was faithful, but they did leave out a couple of things. Hobo is telling the kinds on the surface that he met Bpndrewd once and felt as if he were in the presence of something not human. He also said that Bondrewed was from another country and is said to have committed some crime. Bounty hunters sent to get him always dissapear. Then later when Bondrewed is talking to Riko and Nanachi he says that 2 other White whistles took their last dive; Lord of Mystery and Lord of Guidance. One went through the Ido Front elevator, but another somehow invaded the 6th layer through his own means. I can't remember which one did what, so someone else can clarify. I'm upset they left out the part of those two White Whistles, and I hope they interject that information later. I feel like they will be important later on. They are somewhere down there and will likely meet up with our characters. If anything from the first point or second point is inaccurate, someone let me know. That should be the gist of it. Its why he didnt grab Riko to experiment on and went after Reg (before he knew how important Reg was to Nanachi). This doesnt come up until riko and nanachi sneak into the processing center but bondrewd fully expected Nanachi to sacrifice Riko to obtain a Life reverberating stone/white whistle and use that to move on. Nanachi has done things like that before (luring orphans and then sacrificing them to turn them into cartridges) and thought that was their plan since he believes nanachi is just...like....him. Its why he showed up when they were both in the processing center (to offer his own expertise in how to obtain a life reverberating stone). Thats why he wanted to recruit nanachi and kept trying to convince them to rejoin his research. He tried using their respective desires (Rikos desire to become a white whistle is one) to guide them and help him (wittingly or unwittingly) accomplish his goal. Prushka becoming Rikos White whistle was not in bonedrewds plan (in fact he really didnt want them to get a life reverberating stone until he got what he wanted from them).
Side note: In the first Season there is a flashback where nanachi handed bonedrewd a Cartridge and he complimented her on the quality of the cartridge.

one small correction, besides that everything is correct.
In the manga, Riko was actually the one that was supposed to be the White Whistle. Bondrewd deduced that since Riko is the one with the most disadvantages in this journey he thought Nanachi wanted to turn Riko into Your Worth. He thought Ozen already explained to them about Your Worth so he didn't ask any questions and thought they had made a firm resolve to sacrifice Riko (he was silent about it probably an attempt to be sensitive about it lol). He was probably waiting for Nanachi to talk to him about Your Worth so that he can do the preparations. Dismantling Reg was just his curiosity taking over just like what Ozen and Riko when they first met Reg did but Bondrewd planned to do it more thoroughly.

@@megugu2155 I thought i said that in the post but yes. they skipped that direct convo in the movie (unfortunately). But bonedrewd believed that Nanachi was pretty much using the same tactics he did with gaining the trust of a orphan to sacrifice them to gain some end goal. he thought that nanachi would sacrifice Riko to turn her into a white whistle. there is a chance he also thought that Reg was a obstacle to that goal which is why nanachi didnt do it before so thats why he snuck in and took reg alone (and it allowed him to experiment on reg so win/win in his mind.). i believe that is why he was taken aback when she accepted his deal for both their safety (not realizing she valued reg).

@@lookw lol just noticed but its kinda funny how Bondrewd's actions throughout this arc implies that he's actively trying to silently understand other people and trying to understand subtle social cues when in reality he is so far off the trail. Like what you said, he thought Nanachi was on his side because he thought Nanachi has the same mindset as him and stuff. And him being silent about the White Whistle issue until it was brought up as an attempt to be sensitive about it.
Makes him seem like an awkward destructive (yet relatively safe) AI trying to understand human intentions. Its probably why pixiv has so many fan comics of him being goofy.

An interesting thought experiment to have with Bondrewed is to think about how he would be seen by our legal system. IN this case they would obviously understand the magical aspect of this. I actually think he would be considered legally insane and not responsible for his actions for everything that he did after using the Soul Slave machine. He was likely into some shady, unethical practices before, but I feel that splitting himself up made this worse. Just look at how he unnervingly never gets angry. I think that splitting ups his soul and sharing it with so many other beings has lead him to no longer have the full range of human emotions. He is obsessive. Only some of the most extreme worst and some of the most extreme best stayed with him. His drive for science now has no bounds, and his ethics are gone, however he still maintains a capacity for love. It makes you wonder what kind of person he was before his consciousness was divided like that. He clearly did have some good attributes. His feelings about children and families and powerful and ring true. He even clearly did a decent job of raising Prushka. However he shares those aspects of himself with the duality of his darkest nature; one where the ends justify any means and where loving someone does not mean you won't do something horrific to them.

I had high hopes but also, realistic expectations for this movie's OST and I couldn't believe that he surpassed my hopes, expectations, everything. I almost cried from joy while listening to it the first time.

    reBirth
    Prayer and Immolation
The Return of Made in Abyss
Riko's Cooking (this one gets weird and crazy at the end)

    Stingerhead Nest

    Tozo Hanoline
Transcendence and Hanezeve (this one is so fucking good omg)
    Dark Reg, NIghtmare Fuel
    The Rumble of Scentific Triumph
Prushka Sequence (like Transcendence, this one is absolutely incredible)

One of my favorite bits of symbolism (that I've yet to see a reactor catch/comment on (I'm posting this before I've watched all of their commentary so I don't know if they did or not yet)) is how while Reg is fighting Bondrewd, we see (based on the eye that's exposed) that he's a monster under his mask. But then, after he gives up his ambitions and is just rooting for Nanachi and her friends' success, he's no longer a monster; he's just a human.
I love how it's such a simple metaphor but there's so much that can be read into it, too. Like, did he regain his humanity, or was his humanity always there and the just stripped away the monster that was covering/overshadowing it? Or is it more showing Mr. Hyde being suppressed and allowing Dr. Jekyll out? How much humanity _does_ he have left? etc. etc. Just that simple bit of symbolism leads you down a contemplative rabbit hole, and I love it!
    Interesting stuff to think about.

Err..............well remove Riko and Reg from the "advance further" and you pretty much got his goals in a nut shell. He wanted nanachi to sacrifice Riko to obtain a White whistle (which technically speaking means she would move on.............just after she became a white whistle) so they would be able to expand their research with 2 blessed people with white whistles. He only considered Riko a necessary sacrifice for Nanachi and Reg he wanted to take apart to understand how he operates (maybe to recreate it). When he learned that Nanachi considered Reg important to them bonedrewd he adjusted his goals accordingly (continue trying to recruit nanachi). He didnt plan for Prushka to become rikos White whistle though he accepted their drive to have a adventure beat his own ambition after they defeated him and he wishes to see them continue.

While I do think this movie is good, I really hope they don't do another movie for the series. I hope they continue this adaptation in the form of a TV show. There are a lot of things that I enjoyed in the TV format that was kind of missing in the movie partly due to its tightened runtime. I mean sure the animation quality was a welcome boost but it already looked good in the series anyway. A lot of the twists lost its impact because of how fast they covered it and moved on to the next plotline instead of taking its time with it and grasping the sheer implications of a lot of the twist involved. There was a lack of character interactions that I really missed because of the movie format. Also can I just say I am not a huge fan of the more adult jokes like the one involving Reg and his penis. I don't need this. Did anybody ask for this? I don't think so.
If I seem overtly negative towards the film, well I have to be considering I need to justify why I can't in good conscience call this a great film like everyone else deem it it be. It is a good movie that really would have benefited as a TV series. But hey, Ozin was not even in this movie for the majority of its runtime and she still managed to be my favourite part about it.

I do agree with you about the lack of character interactions and rapidly moving to the next plot point, but I don't see it as that big of an issue because Bondrewd's character still delivered amazing scene after amazing scene, for me he was definitely the best part about it. I don't really mind the jokes either. I still call this a great movie but do have to give it a few minus points here and there, overall it's like the best 8/10 anime movie I watched ^^

I also prefer series formats for anime adaptations. The amount of info pushed at us in this movie was overwhelming, even for someone like me who's read the manga. An anime only would need to watch it a few times to pick up on everything. They even left out a couple of plot relevant things like a out the Lord of Guidance and the Lord of Mystery taking their last dives, and they did not leave anything plot relevant out in the series. Plus movies take forever to become available. I'm hoping for a continuation as a series, but we're still fortunate to be getting more animated in general, though.
