I've tried to leave a comment twice now. There is a NYT article from 2019 about a fire at Universal Studios in 2008 that destroyed many artists master tapes. Might apply to Steely Dan as well. As always, thorough review my friend.

Thanks for sharing your views. I just listened to the OG U.S. press and it sounds fantastic. But it’s an ABC label press. The blue label MCA is a later repress. I’ll wait the SACD on this one. “NICE”

Yeah I got them mixed up and showed the 1980 release while talking about the 1975 OG. Pretty stupid on my part. The 1975 & 1980 reissue both sound very good. the UHQR does best them in overall resolution and fine detail, but suprisingly not by huge margins but for sure enough you can quickly hear. Thank you so much!!

I'm glad you like your MCA pressing, but note, that's not a 1975 release. That's a 1980 reissue. The 1975 would have been with the yellow/orange concentric rings ABC label. MCA took over in the late '70s.

Hi Mike, the first tape mix was a DBX version and had an issue when doing the pre-press mix. I am not an engineer so don’t know specifics. I own both the UHQR (just got it) and MoFi of Katy Lied. Have not done the side by side yet but have done a first pass listen to UHQR. I like it,…. What’s not to like. As you say, it’s very detailed and presents a very realistic sound stage. Background vocals are etched against a black, black background. Your right, the sax is clean, tight and vivid, drums are forceful but not overdone. Now,… I HAD 38:49 a Kendun copy (with regret, I thinned the herd and traded it in) because I owned the MoFi. Katy Lied holds a special place in my heart as I worked at an audio/record store during
college and snapped up virtually every MoFi available. Loved Katy Lied. I think the Richter mix was just so good in the
midrange focus and dynamics (that was so different than the DBX mix mess) that it made a unique impression on me.
Can’t wait to listen thru the Sasha V (VPI/Lyra Kleos). I don’t think I am sad to own both.

I did the very same thing you did to many albums when MOFI did released them. I wish I would have held on to them but sadly I let them go. This album will sound amazing on the Sasha V's!!! Thank you.

Hey, Mike, I'm glad you're keen on SACDs because I've been a fan from the time they first appeared and I have top-notch SACD playback equipment. I have four Steely Dan SACDs so far ("Can't Buy A thrill", "Countdown To Ecstasy", "Aja" and "Gaucho") and they all sound stunning and I have ordered "Pretzel Logic", "Katy LIed", "The Royal Scam", and the more recent "Two Against Nature" and "Everything Must Go". I have to admit that I'm not familiar with all the albums, so I obviously hope I'm going to like them. The problem, as you well know, is that some of them have yet to be released on SACD by Analogue Productions and I have no idea when that is going to happen. Sadly, I suspect it might even be after April. The wait will probably be worth it, but .....

I sure wish AP could speed up the SACD process and release them when or at least a week or so after the vinyl. But I do agree the AP Steely Dan SACD's sound very good. I am going to purchase the 7 Bob Marley AP albums announced yesterday on SACD. I like Bob Marley but not interested in paying $150 each for them on vinyl. Thank you!

@@MikesVinylExperience When I ordered the first lot of Steely Dan SACDs from Acoustic Sounds, "Gaucho" wasn't available at the time and I waited almost a year for that to be released. I agree entirely with you that having the SACDs arriving a week after the vinyl seems like a good compromise to me. However, maybe it's not that easy. My understanding is that there are only two CD and SACD pressing plants outside Japan (and only one in that country) and perhaps they're flat out producing CDs and SACDs. I've mentioned elsewhere that I wonder if Chad has ever thought of setting up an SACD pressing plant of his own?

Thanks for the detailed comparison Mike. I am not one who is “all in” on these high priced “audiophile” releases as they are even more expensive in the UK. That said, with Steely Dan being one of my favourite bands, I am getting all their UHQRs. The only one I was initially disappointed with was PL where I initially thought overall my 1st UK Probe Pressing ran it close. However the more I played the UHQR the more subtleties I heard. The Probe UK pressings of the first 3 albums are all really good IMO, but are now starting to become more expensive & can be difficult to find in good condition. Hopefully my UHQR of Katy Lied will arrive this weekend & from the reviews I have seen so far, I am expecting that it will sound better than my black label ABC UK first pressing.
Looking forward to your review of the self titled Genesis Atlantic 75 release. I am currently in two minds whether to go for this as the first UK press is a fantastic sounding record.

The original 1975 release was on ABC, so the MCA Terre Haute pressing you have must be a later reissue. According to Discogs, the first MCA release of "Katy Lied" was in 1979, when MCA bought ABC -- but that was a Gloversville pressing (ABCD-846) on the tan/brown label, not the rainbow label. That one was reissued in 1980 with the rainbow label (MCA-37053) and others on the same colored label were pressed that year at Pickneyville and Terre Haute.

@@bacarandii yes it is the 1980 release that I am showing in the video I do have the original 1975 pressing and I think the reason I kind of confused it as I have them reversed in my Discogs catalog. But crazy for whatever reason the 1980 version that I am showing in the video sounds slightly better than my original 1975 that I am talking about in the video. Sorry about the confusion. Thats what I have heard, down in the comments here there is a suggestion that the tape was possibly a DBX version. Chad on his introduction video indicated that they are for the original master taps and remastered by Grundman. I thought they burned up as well. I will do more digging and see what I can come up with. Thank you!!

Oh. One other thing - while I haven't heard it, but UMe did something new with their $30 release of KL. UMe gave the flat digital files from the master tapes and gave them to the great mastering house, Sterling Sound, and they mastered and cut it there. It's supposed to be quite superior to the previous UMe releases

Personally, I don't like the 45 rpm repackaging of recordings that were originally conceived and presented in the two-sided, 33 1/3 rpm format, so I'm not interested in a UHQR product that requires changing sides every two or three songs. Kinda interrupts the intended flow. But it's there for people who want it and can afford it -- so that's swell (although I'm beginning to get the sense from record-buyers that overpriced reissues may be the death of the "vinyl resurgence" of the last ten years or so). I have an original 1975 ABC Pittman pressing of "Katy Lied" (that I bought new when the album came out), a Canadian "Dynaflex" disc from the same year, and the new 33 1/3 Geffen reissue. They all have their merits ("Katy Lied" is my favorite Steely Dan album, and I have CD and SACD reissues from the UK and Japan, too). The new vinyl version that just arrived last night does sound a bit livelier and more detailed than the original LP to my ears, but I'm working from memory and maybe I'm just noticing different things because the mixes/masterings/pressings are slightly different -- as they ought to be. I've only listened to it once and haven't done a direct A/B comparison with anything else.

    • @MikesVinylExperience

Good to hear about the Geffen reissue. I messed up the 1980 album in my video. The 1975 OG and the 1980 reissue. I had the 1980 reissue out and for whatever reason my mind said the 1975 OG. It in fact was the 1980 reissue I used for the comparison and it really sounds good. I agree with you on the 45rpm albums. I would so much prefer 33rpm. I see that AP is doing some of the just announced Bob Marley UHQR's will be on 33rpm but still $125 is alot to pay. I will be getting the SACD's of those. Glad the new Geffen release sounds nice, That is a much better value than the UHQR even though I do really like the sound of the UHQR. I would feel better about the cost of the UHQR if it was at 33rpm. Thank you so much letting me know what the Geffen sounds like. Thanks again.

Warning, critical critique on the video. Just one dudes opinion and nothing personal.
First, we don’t need a 45 minute video in which the history of the album and paper inserts are discussed. If someone is thinking about kickin’ out $150.00 for a record then they surely know this info.
Most are here for one reason:
Which do you consider the best version and why do you think this? Valid reasons. Cut to the chase, get to the meat.
What were the exact issues with this recording and did this UHQR remedy those? If not, then that is an issue. If so, tell me exactly in what ways? Again, the heart of the matter. Incremental changes are not justification.
    Should take like 15 minutes.
Also as far as the fire, that has been overblown. Another myth about alot of those tapes that has been debunked or simply blown out of porportion. This is how misinformation gets spread. This UHQR is from the mastertape.
Different engineer this time on the UME. Joe Nino-Hernes did the UMe pressing. Remastered and cut new. So different process this time around. Joe does very good work. Might consider getting that one because it is apparently not the disappointment the other UMe Dan’s seem to be. Be informed please.
Clarity vinyl may be a lower noise floor on the UHQR but noise floor does not affect eq. And that is what you are describing.
While I understand that this and other videos are simply kind of fun opinions I would still say if one is going to lead the public into which versions sound best then one needs to be thoroughly knowlegable at at least on what engineer has done what.
As far as the assessment, I would encourage you to go back and watch your video. You are basically repeating the same exact words for every song. Excellent, clarity, detail.
    Instead:
What exactly in comparison to each version are you hearing? What were the cons sound quality wise on the other versions specifically? What are the exact complaints with other versions (the splashy cymbals, the piano issues etc those drawbacks) and have they been addressed/remedied on this UHQR? Which has the better tonality? Is it just more treble eq tweeking that is impressing us with more detail or did the drawbacks actually get fixed?
I know, I sound jerk-ish in my critique. I just get tired of seeing all the influencer videos come up but really do not delve into much detail. IMO time would be better spent recording actual samples and say “Here you go, audio evidence. Decide for yourselves” then a follow up vid expressing exactly what you hear that is different. Do the toms and snare sound more real? Does Fagans voice have more midrange life to it? etc etc.
What is your orginal pressings deadwax? Is it a Kendun cut? Wonderful in what way exactly? What does “fantastic sounding” mean exactly?
I think so many of these VC channels have great potential and if I didnt think yours had great potential I wouldn’t lay this all down.
Again, just one guys opinion and hopefully helpful. If not, my apologies for being too forward.
Alright, I will shut up now. Take care🎸✌🏻

Everyone has different opinions A lot of reviews really liked the Geffen release of Katy Lied and the difference was not that great between the UHQR I don’t think the 150 dollar price is reflective of the sound quality You’re paying for the packaging also You also tend towards hyping anything that Acoustics Sounds releases I feel that people should take your opinions with a grain of salt as they tend to be a little biased

Thanks Dave, I only describe what I hear through my system and my ears, I admit I do like what AP has been doing as of late. For the most part everything I have purchased from them lately as been pretty darn good.
Everyone should take any review done by someone (including myself) with a grain of salt as it is going to be that persons opinion. What I might think sounds good, others my have a different opinon. I only try to give people my thoughts on what I think a recording sounds like so as to give them something to consider as they decide if it is something they might be considering purchasing. Like on this particular review I do believe the sound of the UHQR sounded better to me but not by a huge margin over the 1980 release and the 1978 MOFI. I hope that will help people know that while to me it does sound slightly better it is not by much so they can hopefully decide for themselves if it is something they want to spend the money on or not. Also, I do not recieve any free or discounts or kickbacks from anyone including Acoustic Sounds on the albums I reveiw. All are purchased by me with my funds. Thanks again Dave.
