    Small correction: Giles didn't remix Real Love and Free as a Bird for 1+. It was Jeff Lynne himself. Giles did remix the rest of the songs on those Blu-rays

    EBU is a time code sync signal. Probably used to sync the tape with the other machine :)

    • @FranksterArchives
      @FranksterArchives 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yep. EBU (European Broadcasting Union) ran at 25 fps, while SMPTE was 29.97 fps.

    • @Nick_Catania
      @Nick_Catania 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes EBU is timecode. It may not have been to sync up the two 24 track machines, rather to sync the 24 track machines to a VTR. My guess, since it was the mid 90s, it may have been 1 inch, type C video tape. They probably used this when syncing the audio to the music video. Since in Europe, they use PAL, it’s 25fps. Non drop.

    Getting rid of the speeches in anthology 1 was a step in the right direction as you mentioned. For anthology 2 they should have ditched the live recordings and included more of the studio outtakes that were planned for this release but dropped. The live concert material should have been used as a separate release but unfortunately, I don't that will ever happen.

      Agree 100%. The live songs are the only tracks I tend to skip on this one and they really do seem out of place. Even more disappointing knowing there were so many others they could have put on instead.

      @Christian Cárdenas : I think the same. It's a kind of aural history, giving context ànd space and time to let the AT's sink in a bit. I like it so much that I continued this collage myself, using all kinds of input: the Anthology dvd's, interviews on lp's and YT, etc... I started this in 2006, when my daughter Rani was born and got a dangerous meningitis when she was a week old. It was the only thing which could take my mind of that subject during the 6 weeks that it took her to survive this. In all, it came down to about 400', and I called it: 'Four Guys - The Beatles In Their Own Words': 5 cd-r's, copies of which I gave to a few friends. This year I made a new SDL-version for my radio program I have on the city radio station, with new material: 8 hours, in total. Today, Episode 7: The White Album went out on air. I have enjoyed doing this greatly, thanks to Paul, John, George, Ringo and George Martin !

    “Baby’s In Black” on both Real Love and Live At The Hollywood Bowl are from the 8/30/1965 show, but Real Love uses John’s spoken intro from the 8/29/1965 show instead, which still makes it somewhat unique and worth having.
    Also, I’ve always felt that Rubber Soul is woefully underrepresented here, with only three tracks from the period, and only two of them from the album itself… an album itself that was a major transition into spending more time in the studio. I hope a Super Deluxe Edition can finally right this wrong…

    • @seid3366
      @seid3366 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed. Rubber Soul was recorded quickly, but only 3 tracks? I'd be curious on what they'd include, because of bootleggers doing their best to archive some of these sessions. But for songs like Michelle and Girl, I'm curious if rehearsals will be included since both were recorded very quick.

    Great to hear how 'Real Love' was built up on the multitrack, and the story behind the presentation of some of the other tracks. I've never gone out of my way for bootlegs, on the whole, but I do have Sessions, and I can't help feeling that something closer to the concept of that might have been rewarded with more plays over the yesrs. Not that I'm complaining about Anthology - I lapped it up at the time.

The May 4th jam sessions and things like Hey Liley, Liley Lo are things I really want to hear! Plus, where else are you supposed to put Carnival of Light? It's probably a bad bit of noise, but I think as long as they just stick it on there as a bonus track and don't make a big deal out of it, it should be fine.

    A fascinating video, Andrew, especially your description on how Real Love was recorded! Interesting to hear how some some tracks were slated to be included on Anthology 2 but didn't make the final cut for various reasons. I think you're right about Carnival of Light although I haven't heard it myself, only read about the content and way-out randomness of the track - the myth surrounding it might not have lived up to the reality! I always learn so much from your videos and this one was no exception - keep them coming!

Hopefully, maybe, the other material will come out and some proceeds go to a favorite charity of the surviving Beatles …? Until then the fans are still being treated well as far as I’m concerned. I just may not be around to hear anything new if they do.
    Great job as always! Til next time…cheers!

    When I first watched your video, I wasn't so sure of 'The Day in the Life' piano chord ending. But rethinking it I could really see the TV show ending with all 3 members merging on the chord (maybe a B&W of John at his piano fading in over the scene) and then the final photo from 69 of all members together for the last time. I think it would've been far more effective than the ending we had of Paul winking to camera and then 'Free As A Bird' . The documentary would've ended as a recollective time capsule of their life in the 60s particularly from where John and George are now...sadly. Brilliantly researched alongside your Part 1 and agree that 'Carnival of Light' cannot live up to the myth. Always thought of it as another 'What's the New Mary Jane' - still dying to hear it though :) Would really love to see an episode on the aborted 'Sessions' album from 1985:)

    In the mid 1980's I heard 2 cheap, bootleg looking, obscure albums call ,Silver Beatles part 1 and 2 with very raw, lo fi recordings from 1962. Three Cool Cats, Take Good Care of my Baby, and dozens of other songs from John, Paul, George and Pete, However the Silver albums along with other Beatle bootlegs were officially banned from record stores at the end of the 80's due to their apparent unsavory origins. I heard those same songs on both Anthology albums. I was very impressed at the improved sound quality and added period authentic echo effects giving it much more fuller sounding songs compared to the 80's bootleg albums.

How they managed to mix 'Drive My Car', 'The Word' & 'What You're Doing' in to a seamless 3 minute track blows my mind to this day! Hi Andrew, great video with many helpful details on the back story of what was included. This is the only Anthology that I actually liked which I bought shortly after its release.
    I do wish they could have cleaned up the Real Love vocals a bit more. It sounds very tinny. Interestingly, in my opinion, this Anthology contains a few song version that I prefer over the studio releases. I like the Good Morning, Good Morning version more than Sgt. Pepper, absent the animal sounds and other differences.
    The standout track that is VERY different from the studio release is George's It's Only a Northern Song. Not a great track on Yellow Submarine that sounds very different and very good on the Anthology . The lyrics are also slightly different. If you take a listen, they are two totally different songs.

    • @seid3366
      @seid3366 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Idea: update the original triology (update notes, rebalance a few songs, repackage in digipacks), and a 4th anthology album would include other tracks that could've been on the original triology. Alongside that, there would be more "obscure" songs (ex. I Want To Tell You) and jams (ex. Hey Liley Liley Lo)

    • @kgeo753
      @kgeo753 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seid3366 So, obviously we’ve since found out that Anthology isn’t coming this year. I think it we’ll get it after the Giles Martin remixes are complete. The outtakes are too great of a selling point to give them to fans in a single package now. Get the remixes out and then update Anthology with the best of all of the outtakes from the remixes and the original Anthology. Either way. I think we can count on having Beatles releases to spend our money on every year for at least the next decade.

    EBU is European Broadcasting Union, equivalent to our Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers, they have a standard for sync-lock timecode that is recorded (printed) to one of the tracks on one of the tapes to be synced (to another machine or these days to a computer). Over here we'd say "stripe it with simptee", meaning, say, Track 24 or 1, outermost tracks and those most likely to suffer from edgewear and dropout and thus compromise audio, would have the tone recorded all the way thru the tape, and the other tape machine (or computer) would be set up to read the time code, keeping both machines in sync. So yes, you had it! Who else waited at Best Buy til midnight when they opened the boxes for the Anthology sets??!! Got em all on CD and vinyl.(and VHS and DVD...)

    Another great video, Andrew, with enough meticulous details to stop Mark Lewisohn in his tracks!
    You referred to The Beatles Sessions LP. Have you thought of doing a video to explain the story behind that and why it never appeared?
    Or maybe it did appear? I have a white-labelled UK pressing with the cover as you show in this video, which I bought at a record fair in the late 80s. The stallholder had a number of copies of that, but also some copies on "Odeon" which had proper labels, and looked like a commercial issue. Perhaps it sneaked out in Europe somehwere?

    • @moxievision
      @moxievision 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty sure any copy of The Beatles - Sessions is a pirate/bootleg copy. But some of them are very well produced, good enough that you might think they're legit. I have one with a different cover than the one shown here, and there's no confusing it with a legit EMI release, but it still sounds surprisingly good.

    • @MikeThomas78
      @MikeThomas78 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@moxievision Do you know, I never even considered it might be a pirate issue, but you must be right. Although the cover looks very realisticallly genuine, the record itself has hand-written matrix numbers of ST-221-A and -B which look very dodgy! Presumably someone "leaked" the tape out of EMI when they realised it wasn't going to be released.

    The greater question regarding Anthology 3 is how they managed to get the stuff from Jan/69 from the Twickenham and Saville Row sessions since at that time the Nagra Tapes from the Get Back/Let It Be sessions were still missing from Apple Vaults (reportedly since 70's)?
    And also, why they canned the third Lennon song for the Anthology 3 instead of doing what they've accomplished with Free as a Bird and Real Love?
    And the last question: with the release of Super Deluxe Boxes of Pepper, White Album, Abbey Road and now Let it Be...do you see a time coming when they would do an extended or super deluxe anthology revisit?

    • @danpretty970
      @danpretty970 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Regarding your first question, the answer is they didn't use the Nagra tapes, they used their 8-track tapes which separately recorded the same moments. As for the bits which they synced up to film on the Anthology video, apparently they literally went around having to pick up bootlegs and then manually sync them up with silent video!

    There used to be a retail trade back then called Ice that our record shop subscribed to. They would preview upcoming releases and sometimes the tracks listed varied wildly from the finished product. The Who’s deluxe edition of My Generation is a great example (deals with whoever owned the rights fell apart so many promised tracks disappeared.) I remember reading about Anthology 2 &that there was going to be more audio commentary from the series interspersed between songs just like in the first collection. For example, Ringo complaining about the touring grind before the Live tracks. While I’m glad they chose to drop this idea (didn’t like it interrupting the flow on Anth 1 either) but would love to hear a promo version if it exists.

    One question that I can't understand about Anthology 2 is why the fantastic (and, for me, even better than the used in the oficial release) version of "And your bird can sing" had to appear with those laughs. It's something absolutely no sense. About the Beatles' recording of "Real love", I confess that in my opinion the "Imagine John Lennon" documentary's version, with its simple arrangement of guitar and vocal has a more special beauty. In other side, the version of "It's only love" is much better than that released in "Help!" album. Anyway, another great part of the Anthology CD series.
