EDIT, READ ME! This is NOT the greatest way of doing this, this shows that you can get an AK built in your garage with minimal tools but these many years later I cringe at myself. Want it done professionally? Chromevandiumarms.com
Ok, gonna add a couple things here because people are going to be using this video as a guide 1. Don't press directly on the crown of your barrel like this. Barrels are only about 20-26 Rockwell hardness. They can deform VERY easily you need to put brass or aluminum in between the ram of the press and your crown 2. The front trunnion needs a minimum of two firm solid spots to push off of when pressing the barrel in, that chisel used was sitting on the "mag shelf" portion of the trunnion. Its a very shallow portion and can snap off or possibly bend. It can happen easier than you can imagine. DO NOT DO THIS 3. That barrel bending like it did is going to cause some permanent point of impact issues 3.
i totally agree and you're 100% right, but it's an ak, as a 200 yard and under gun i guess you can just kinda hammer some shit together in your garage and call it a day. i would never treat an AR like this, luckily even building one from absolute scratch there's no point in an AR build where you'd have to do anything like that that would screw your accuracy up like that. i cringed watching that barrel bend like that though, that and the crown being crushed like that i can't imagine you'd get better than 4-5 moa accuracy with good ammo and a benchrest. like i said, if you're using this as a 200 yard and under gun, to each his own i guess, but a rifle should be accurate.
@attributetovienna would you mind explaining your method of setting up your barrel and receiver and your process of pressing? I've been researching quite a bit and would really like your take. I immediately thought of the same issues you brought up so I figured you could provide some guidance. Any info is very much appreciated.
It is preferable to use an end mill to cut into the barrel. Using a drill bit, the point on the drill bit can force it off of the barrel leading into an elongated hole for the retaining pin. After using the proper sized end mill, one can then use a reamer to bring it to the proper size.
I seriously thought about building an AK before I saw this series’s, don’t get me wrong, I think you have done a great job here, but unless you’re building 2 or 3 a month, buying all the extra stuff you need for the build, you’re cheaper of just finding a decent prebuilt weapon
It is very wrong to use a dummy round as a "GO" gauge and even more wrong to use it with tape as a "NO GO" gauge. I have an AK which closes bolt on most of the live rounds (Wolf, Tiger, Barnaul), but sometimes the bolt stuck during the cycle, and I need to use a rubber mallet to open it again. I used the actual GO gauge and the bolt DOESN'T close on it, i.e. the headspace is wrong! And this is the reason why the bolt sometimes stuck: all rounds are different (plus / minus), plus the GO gauge takes the heat expansion factor into account. Using the actual round as a Go Gauge won't give you that info and you will headspace your AK incorrectly. Be aware!
I use a sledge hammer to press a barrel. Hardest part is finding someone to hold the barrel when I take a good whack. I tend to miss the target is why I have a hard time finding a volunteer.
it really does make AR building child's play ,I'm on my first build AK build and there a lot buy and learn but well worth the pain it feels more like your on gun
Guys please don't support your trunnion through the middle like this, this puts all the force on the bullet guide and could damage that or the barrel from a non even contact. The trunnion support tool only costs 45 dollars online and will save you a bent barrel/ bullet guide.
I build a few AKs BITD when kits came with fitted barrels, I stopped when they had to switch to new barrels because of having to drill the gas port hole, head spacing and cutting the pin grooves. You're making it look easy but that was back before TH-cam and so you just had to figure it out as you went based on trial and error along with message board write-ups. I am curious about the decision to use a 1/4" drill rather than plunging a center cutting 7 mm carbide end mill or maybe like a 17/64 finishing up with a 7mm ream. Serious question, no criticism intended, this has been a great series so far.
Very helpful . Thanks when the parts kits fist came into the Country everything was a close guarded big secret . No One wanted to give out any Info .so I researched best I could in books and talking to others and trial and error .To complete my builds . making my own tools and improving on them. The kits were complete missing only the recever. $99 doll very affordable 60 doll for a receiver those were the Days .Also built 2Fals.Very enjoyable.
Try using 6" rulers or something similar to get the barrel clocked correctly. One on the trunion, one on a barrel flat spot. From an angle in line with the bore you should be able to see if they are parallel to each other.
Well I used the same size chisel (Pittsburgh pro) and it snapped and was a couple inches from flying at me and killing me. I've used this series for the majority of my build and I am a fan, but I am going to look for a different method of pressing the barrel
This has been really good so far although even I cringed when the barrel was being pressed in. Felt like watching Tool Time 😆 It's still very educational
Hey man, I watched all your videos, great stuff, should be way more subscribers! Anyway, can't seem to find anywhere, on a complete gf3 psa, if wanna remove the barrel , it's it possible to remove barrel while it's still in the receiver, and is the front trunion riveted to receiver or just pinned, my barrel is rusted. I might try to re barrel it. thanks a million.
Now I know why people like AR's. I see a myriad of things that could contribute to inaccuracy unlike am AR that's designed to ensure alignment of its components. Was going to purchase an AK, but after viewing this have decided to get a piston actuated AR instead.
Looking good! Only thing I would suggest is slow the drilling speed down a little bit . Yes i know you sped up that part LOL but before you did It looked like it was moving pretty fast. Just going on my experience in machining .
Kurt Oberst I know of no AKM's that screw into the receiver. I do know that the Galil's barrel screws into the receiver, but every stamped AKM i know of presses into the front trunnion and gets pinned.
could you theoretically do all the pressing without a press? like with a brass hammer and a lot of time. or is it realistically impossible with out one.
I have a question about installing a headspaced barrel. When I press it in after the trunion is rivited in, will it be difficult to line up the pre drilled barrel pin hole? : also I dont know if this question is relevant, because this Is my first build and haven't got my kit yet. Just a wandering thought

thuggies drake hella loose. the amount of force on the lugs from each shot will be emence with headspace like that...if you take a properly headspaced ak and stick a live round on the bolt and check it in that manner the bolt should become tight right as it fully locks up with no wobble between the barrel and bolt...I mean his bulid would be safe for a little while but I wouldn’t wanna put it by my face for the long haul...
I wondered how you check headspace on an AK. I did what you did on on an old Romanian build I bought years ago. It was not as loose without the tape on mine. I was worried as I have shot several thousand rounds through it and it’s a a Lancaster.
What is the measurement supposed to be for headspace on an ak. 2 pieces of painters tape seems pretty loose. When I rebarreled a savage bolt action I used one layer of scotch tape (close to .003”) but I imagine the ak runs quite a bit bigger tolerance than a bolt rifle.
So whilst I'm pressing the barrel pin in is it normal for the right ear of the rear sight block to bend along with it? Will it unbend the further along the barrel pin gets pressed in?
Omg, how did not bend that barrel or crush your trunnion or bend the receiver. Please do not follow this advice. Easy way to break expensive parts. The right tools for the job go a long way.
This is bad mechanical practice in many aspects. Clamping the bare receiver, clamping the bare barrel, completely unstable and unsafe pressing techniques. Please take this video as a general guide only
This gun is gonna shoot all over the place.. The receiver is still soft and not heat treated, he bent the f**k out of the barrel while pressing it in, and the rivet holes of the front trunion were egged out.. It's still be something to be proud of, but accuracy wise it's gonna be total crap.
you give me anxiety, and im sure michael kalash would be twitching at the sight of a yank literally using a h press to force a barrel in the way you did. it may still function but definitely does not scream precision. nor careful craftsmanship, everyone starts somewhere i suppose

After watching 7 parts, AR platform seems a lot simpler from a 80% perspective.
Good Video. All the money you spent on tools to build a AK you cheaped out on the most important tool.
The HEAD SPACE GAUGE
Someone buy him a set of headspace gauges!!! Great series thought!
I know I know
@Rick P. It should fit.
And a reamer for the barrel fixing pins

An end mill would be the best option instead of a drill bit.
You'll bend the barrel doing that, and mess up the crown also. Barrel pin hole needs to be reamed after being drilled.
