Some people also use the kingpin and nut to actually hook and lock into smiths and such easier, makes you able to tell where and how you're locked in, feels "safer"
Aye mad that's good to hear that your set hasn't been loosening themselves. I'll skate my set out and buy a freshie, cheers for another banger vid Waxton!
They eventually unscrew themselves…I was just on a 2 year inverted kingpin journey… once you find out how to finally get them to stop unscrewing then the metal stretches and you get a harsh click sound while turning…so I’ve resulted to filing down my actual standard kingpin and sanding down my top bushing so the geometry of the bottom bushing 😊
Aw man... I wish I'd known this before I bought them! Have been using them for 3 weeks on my Stage 4's and have just started noticing a clicking sound!! :/
I was riding the Indy Mids (inverted kingpin) for a while and had the loose ing issue. I was taking Teflon tape for piping and wrapping it around the thread to make sure they didn’t loosen. A couple months ago I bought the newer Thunder with the IKP. These have been my favorite truck since the moment I put them on. I’m not positive, but I believe they may have more kingpin clearance than the Slappy trucks. Even if they don’t, it’s nearly impossible to hit the kingpin while grinding. Great video by the way. Love all of them.
Back in the 90's you could just put the kingpin in upside-down as the base plate was the same hex shape and size as the kingpin nut. Also you can make your bushings smaller for more clearance. Then grind king came out with an Allen key dome shaped king pin, it was probably $6.. none of them came loose because your using the same nyloc nut
I have forged titaniums in my 2 skating boards, so loosing those “base plates/weight perks” had kept me from switching to/investing in inverted kingpin baseplates.
I have read that inverted kingpins are a hassle to tighten / adjust. You have to adjust, ride, adjust ride. And they come loose easily apparently. I still think they look sweet.
Only inverted kingpin trucks i had were krux. The bolt that makes it inverted ended up grinding the bottom of the baseplate. Thus making the trucks unusable. I guess dont adjust your trucks that much if they are inverted kingpin. Havent skated any other brand of inverted kingpin, but i do want to try the new slappy lows. They come with the hollow inverted kingpin.
also I dunno about anyone else, but inverteds make a weird "creaking" noise when they turn, i almost feel snaps, and it's not the bushings making squeaks, it's a very different sound.
@@jbro311 not the pivot cup either, it's a very distinct creak that's coming from the kingpin, i know this because i move it with my hands and can hear it.
I’ll say I agree it does make a different sound, I hear it also. I have to sets of Indy mids with the inverted kingpins and they are noisy and I did wax my pivot cups.
update; recently switched back to my thunder inverted baseplate, and no longer have the creaking, not sure why, I didn't do anything different lol, bizarre, maybe it was just the way the threads were locked in last time? who knows
I bought a set of forged hollow mids just to put the forged inverted kingpin baseplates on my Titanium 169s. I put Titanium inverted kingpins on them as well.
It was actually the Indy mids with the inverted kingpin that everyone complained about trucks loosening, I've ridden ikps from everyone that makes them and have never noticed anything loosening to such a degree that people make it out to be. It's almost like their trucks are falling off after one session or something...
The Indy inverted kingpin provided good clearance and stays put initially. Once the hangar is ground down to where the kingpin touches the grinding surface, they will loosen. That was my experience putting the IKP on new standard 159s. It was a complete nuisance. Again, prior to that, I liked them
@@LeonPaxton additionally, I applied a generous amount of Loctite in hopes to alleviate the issue. It didn’t really help. Understandably, on a well-locked feeble there is a lot of pressure on the kingpin nut!
@@jamesryan4325 yes, it very well might be….I’m glad I tried the inverted kingpins. I wish the issue could be solved, because initially the performance was great!
I haven’t had that problem riding Indy Mids. I have them pretty tight and have not needed to re tighten them at all 🤷♂️ Indy updated their shaft nut to fix the loosening problem
Inverted kingpin is ok for loose trucks. If you like your trucks being tight then forget kingpin as you have less lenght on it to tight. I see you also have fresh bushings. With already used ones it will feel even more loose.
It's hard to find hollow inverted kingpins, which means that only forged base plates and hollow/titanium hangers can make the trucks lighter. I generally like the kingpin clearance and the look of inverted kingpins but it makes Indys too heavy for my taste.
Personally I have skated Tensor Mag Lights for almost 2yrs now, they get a lot of hate about axles breaking, bending etc-I have had no problems at all & have grinded them down to almost both axles. The only way they could be better is if they had inverted hollow kingpins :P
i prefer cast plates all around, i have some indy mids and quite like them. but i've been using grindkings and gk inverted kingpins in other trucks for almost 30 years
I tried the new thunder ones but they're a tad too tall for me, I know I could probably get used to them, but my muscle memory doesn't like it lol. I ride thunder's forged baseplates, so until they make a thunder inverted with a forged baseplate, I can't do it :P
I took some thunder hollow kingpins, with a grinder made grooves for an screwdriver in the "base", then glued with some epoxy a nut to the base plate. That's how I got my forged baseplate and hollow inverted kingpin trucks.😊
i switched from the 159s to 169 titaniums back in may and now it seems like everyone is using 169s.the loosening is exactly the problem i had with my grind king disruptors.have you skated any bowls on the 169s? they helped me move up a level.
As someone who’s been skating since 1988, inverted kingpins have never worked. Numerous truck companies have tried. They didn’t work back in the grind king days, and the same issues present themselves in the current range of trucks. It’s just re marketing a a failed gimmick to another generation. It’s the same thing board brands have done with all this impact or breakage “technology” it’s the same old nonsense, chuck some fibreglass somewhere and give it a fancy new name like flight deck or pop secret or whatever. We’ve seen it all before under different name. Funny thing is, we’ve all managed perfectly well for decades with regular trucks and boards, and almost all this so called tech has been tried many times and it never sticks around. Yeah a board will break from time to time, but you may learn to land better, and yes you might stick on a grind occasionally, mainly due to the kingpin being made of steel not aluminium. But when you see the likes of yuto or Nick Matthew’s in particular, sticking dipped smith grinds on venture lows that have very little kingpin clearance, you realise again that it comes down to technique and skill. I’ve been skating a long time, and worked in the industry for years. Inverted kingpin trucks continue to come and go but they never seem to work and I’ve tried almost ALL of them.
Haha so true man, sometimes I wonder what is just a marketing ploy for more sales and what is actually updated technology that will change the game and actually help!
@@LeonPaxton Thanks, would you recommend an 8.25? I think it’d still be comfortable, but also offer enough maneuverability so that turns aren’t too hard to make.
