    Thanks for the video! Being in the US, you have the benefit of not having to pay customs and import taxes. In Finland, we’d have to add roughly one third of the sum of price and shipping to the grand total to cover customs and taxes. Even then, it’s pretty lucrative.

    I did the same thing through Buyee and Yahoo auctions near the beginning of the pandemic not knowing what I was in for. I won an auction that came with a boxed N64, loose N64, PSX-DVR, PS2, PS3, GameBoy, boxed Super Famicom, loose Super Famicom, loose GameCube. I think that was it, plus cables and some controllers. I think it came to around $150..... Until shipping came into play. I went with the cheapest option, it arrived at the warehouse. Then they denied me the shipping option I went with that was around $400 that they initially had agreed to. On top of that, they demanded I get it within 30 days or it would be discarded. I was soo pissed. I ended up spending around $800 in the end and rather than flown in, they shipped it. On a boat. It arrived about a month later all beat up, the side was dented and knocked off of the PSX-DVR (the main item I actually wanted), the cables were filthy and the GameBoy was missing. I know there are some success stories but I don't think I'll ever do it again.

      @retrobitstv  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man, that is rough. Sorry to hear your experience was the opposite of mine. Shipping is the killer for sure. I found that when I consolidated all my small items into a bigger box, the cheaper shipping options (by boat) disappeared.

    I've bought items on eBay for years, and I've never received a shipment as well-packaged as that Saturn. Japanese shipping is no joke - they know how to do it right.

      Hah yea, half the things I buy on eBay don't have any padding at all and many arrive broken. Shipping from Japan may be pricey, but at least you know your item will arrive in one piece!

    I don't know man. I have tried to use those Japanese auctions on multiple occasions now failing to ever win. I bought my Saturn for $17 plus $9 in shipping off of evil Bay as a junk console. I just had to make a slight adjustment for the laser but other than that it works like a charm. Granted that's not in the box but it did come with one controller that works all right. This is a great video however, and great to see this type of information shared!

    • @retrobitstv
      @retrobitstv  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good deal on the Saturn! Yea, one thing I didn't mentioned is that a lot of Japanese sellers sell the same exact items on eBay. Some good deals can be found but other items are marked up a bunch for the export market (e.g. X68000 computers). Definitely worth comparing both sites before buying.

    I went this route back in 2009 or so to get my AV Famicom and Super Famicom. At the time I don't think domestic prices on the systems were too bad but a lot of the more "recognizable" games were more expensive, but I was able to get a lot of the ones I was interested in (Rockman series, etc) pretty cheap. The SFC itself wasn't working at first, but it just needed a replacement fuse.

  • @sunderark

    Yeah the shipping thing with Buyee is a bummer. Sometimes it's cheaper, I bought a 14" monitor and had it shipped for 150 bucks. Now after buying another 15" monitor I was quoted ...get this... 370 BUCKS. It's always a surprise but not necessarily a great one.

  • @skins4thewin

    Yeah you should be perfectly fine running Japanese game systems on American power. It works perfectly fine. I use tons of various Japanese systems & have never once had a problem, nor have the vast majority of ppl who do so. & yeah lol naturally the Composite cable is only going to have 3 pins as it's only using 3 signals. One for Composite video & two for the stereo audio channels. That's pretty standard for most Composite cables for any system. & yes the system does indeed output RGB so you'll definitely want to utilize that. Congrats on the awesome purchase! You'll definitely want to get one of those carts that allows you to play different region games as well as burns! They are cheap & worth every penny.

    Power supplies can take a 20% voltage change anyway, so something rated for 100v should handle 120v anyway. And the Saturn is even better, as their internal power supply is rated for 100-120 volts, meaning Sega likely reused the same part in the US and Japan, as it's cheaper to design one power supply and mass produce it.

    Truly rare stuff- like the commodore max, or the vic 1001, is very expensive on buyee (89,500 yen (US$712.42) for the vic). I think Japanese sellers are onto this!

    • @retrobitstv
      @retrobitstv  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've got an alert set up for the Commodore Max and they certainly do go for crazy prices, especially boxed and with software. That said, right after I posted this video, someone was able to scoop up a working machine for around $200 which I think is pretty reasonable. I'll keep waiting for that good deal to come my way :)

    I bought some items on Buyee earlier this year, and I didn’t like the multiplication of small fees (fees to add money to the kitty, fees to verify the item, fees to repackage, etc.). I also misread one of the auctions which included only the manual and no game :(
    But it was a learning experience. I still prefer buying small lots of broken stuff with hidden, interesting items on eBay, if only to save on shipping ;)

    I haven't used Buyee yet, but I can tell you going to game stores in Japan is a weird experience. Lots of games that are uncommon/expensive in the US, are in the 100 yen bin(~$1) in Japan. I love Intelligent Qube for the Playstation, but it's like $100 here, but a few years ago I was in japan and it, along with the sequels were $1 each
    Anyway, I blame you for my future Buyee purchases that I'm sure are happening soon!

    This is weird - I was just on ZenGarden yesterday wondering why a complete Sega Saturn, was the same price as the Saturn Pad I was looking at on a UK website. - now a Roland sound module - that would be nice. - What is the best option for a Saturn ODE? - I have not kept up with all the options these days.

    • @retrobitstv
      @retrobitstv  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not really looked into replacing the drive yet, but I see that the Fenrir ODE pops up a lot in discussion about the Saturn.

    • @TheRealGara
      @TheRealGara ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Terraonion MODE. lots of bells and whistles plus harddrive support so you can toss the entire library on a silent cool running SSD. It really handles saves nicely as well.
      If all you want is a simple menu and to play the games then Fenrir or Rhea/Phoebe are both fine. The Satiator also exists, but I'd only recommend it if you want to be able to play original disc's along with the ODE. The Satiator is expensive, but being able to just pop it into the video expansion slot on any stock Saturn is neat.

I used to order quite a lot of retro stuff from the UK (from TFW8B for example), but I'm hardly doing it anymore because taxes and customs as well as DHL's handling fee on top of it all make it too expensive in most cases.

    Jesus! Those shipping fees absolutely kill it for me. I much prefer to use the super slow super cheap Economy shipping option for international orders, but that doesn't look like it's an option here.
