That image came alive under your brush. So helpful to watch you doing this. I had some Gouache paints for Christmas and haven't dared to try using them yet.
Sue I'm sure that you'll find gouache quite helpful , at least for backgrounds. These paints require some time to get used to, but I really appreciate that I can use them even on very thin paper. Mostly we have in our stores sets with 6 or 12 basic primary colors, so only after I realized that it's not good to use them directly from jars, but I that need to mix and to add small amount of colors into white gouache, I started to understand what an interesting medium it is. If other manufacturers have gouache sets with bigger variety of colors,, it's even easier to start using these paints for beginners, when you don't need to mix them by yourself
Coloring with Alena I’ve just watched an artist trying them for the first time, having first given himself a crash course in Gouache from TH-cam. I love how it can be used thickly for a flat storybook look, or very much watered down like watercolour. I have the Arteza set of 24. I’m hoping to get some time tomorrow to open them up and have a go with them. I have to have a small procedure in hospital on Monday and I’m not allowed to drive for 2 days after because of the anaesthetic. So I might have some gentle art time this week.
I was just looking back at this page of yours. You have such a nice, soft and painterly result. Why do you not continued to use gouache much in Teresa Goodrich books for backgrounds and base layer?
You are so smart and kind. ...and your voice is comforting. I'm enjoying following you here and on your Patreon page.thanj you for the guache info.im looking for poster paints info too and wondering if anyone here knows whether it's ok to put some colored guache or watercolor paint of high quality in some white poster paint to use for coloring backgrounds and making clouds which look very good when done with poster paint alone. Btw..your picture here is looking really good!

Wow! Very beautiful! Thanks for the tips. I only have white gouche so far. I was very intimated by the bright colors. I will have to try a few colors and mix with white. It looks like fun.
Hi Debbie! When I was a child I also was intimidated and puzzled with bright gouache colors. I used paint directly from jars, I had set of 6 bright primary colors and I didn't mix them at all...so everything looked very childish and untidy. As adult, only after I discovered how artists mix gouache to get interesting color shades, how to add a little bit of color into basic white, I really started to appreciate them. I love their matte finish and that I can use them on thin paper.
Thanks Alena, I've just bought myself a big set of gouache in the Christmas sale and have finished my first colouring with them. I was already becoming acquainted with the benefits of using them, but the tip of using Neocolor II on top is excellent, I will certainly give it a go. I also found that pencils blend quite easily over the gouache underpainting.
I remember myself in childhood when I hated to use gouache, because I used it directly from jars, I had set of 6 bright primary colors and I didn't mix them at all...so everything looked very childish and untidy. In France as well when I was young they gave us gouache paint too. It would come in all kinds of ranges and prices and I think for schools it’s the cheapest. Watercolour is more expensive comparing and more transparent, for children it’s more complicated to get used to it or get the feel of it.
I remember how we used gouache in school but I don't understand why the teacher never explained to us how to mix primary colors with white to get beautiful pastel colors. I remember that we mostly painted with 'clear' colors from jars... without mixing. If a child was fortunate to have 12 colors set, pictures looked better, but if child owned only 6-colors set... you can imagine those horrible works. I thought that gouache is a terrible medium... until as an adult I watch youtube videos with it
No Frederique, I would choose for masking lines on Hanna girls not gouache but acrylic paint. My gouache has more rough texture comparing to acrylic paint so when I want to work on top of it with pencils, pencil strokes are more visible and on faces it doesn't look good. Acrylic paint is more delicate and for me it's easier to work with pencils on top of it... but it's only my humble opinion, I saw several pictures where other colorists used gouache in Hanna's books.
I'm confused 🤪 did you say prismacolors work over the paint or they don't work? Also what is that crayon like thing you're using is it pastels this work is beautiful
7:24 "Bc of the thick creamy texture of the paint, they lay down on the paper with a not so even layer, so using very soft pencils like Prismacolors will provide you with an uneven and scratchy color. And I prefer to use Prismacolors (Edit: she meant to say Polychromos) if I need to work on top of gouache paints since slightly harder pencils will be more helpful." Polychromos are a harder oil-based lead, whereas Prismacolors are a softer wax-based lead. She just goofed by saying the wrong brand since they both are a 4 syllable word that start with P, have a middle C, end with S (and also have an L). TL;DR: Soft waxy pencils are too soft to go on top of gouache, try to go with a harder pencil.
Hi Frederique! Unfortunately I have no idea... Try Amazon UK, they had some sets www.amazon.co.uk/Professional-Gouache-Paint-Set-Painting/dp/B075XQM2YR In my country it's very popular and cheap, so I was shocked to see that price on Amazon USA is 10 times bigger! So be careful... Maybe you can look at other brands

Thank you so much! It was quite interesting coloring experience
Thank you so much for this video! I was afraid of Gouache, but you make it understandable. I can't wait to get this book and follow along.

I’m glad that you explained how to use gouache. I have a set from Arteza that I’ve had for over a year that I have yet to use. I think I’ll try them.

Hi Alena penses tu que cette gouache peut masquer les motifs qui sont sur les visages des albums de Hanna Karlzon ?
