    Told my 70-year-old mother about this. She knew what it was right away & said she’d eaten it when she was young. She also thought it was surprisingly delicious.

      Ah I love that! Honestly take away the gelatin part and it makes more sense to me - cottage cheese and fruit is a good combo!

      Ooh let me know how you like it! I would honestly use the sauce for anything. Maybe with a little less sugar because I don’t like super sweet things!

    That was a proper use of gelatin in a dessert; to provide a firmer, smoother texture. Wouldn't mind trying that myself. Much better than the usual "salads" of cabbage and carrots suspended in lime jello--or the only marginally better fruit cocktail in cherry jello. Honestly, the mid-century cookbooks had an unhealthy obsession with jello.

    • @WithLoveKristina
      @WithLoveKristina  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha I’m pretty sure it’s passed down from Victorian and Edwardian times when making food look attractive was of the utmost importance. Victorians would put ANYTHING in a mold.

    • @RPD-zo5cj
      @RPD-zo5cj 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty sure that the obsession with gelatin was because of the crazy new home invention, the refrigerator. Most just had a standard icebox, which wasn't really cold enough for such a thing. Those who could afford a refrigerator would show off their new beautiful addition to the kitchen with the use of making everything in jello to make everyone in the social circle jealous/impressed with the ability to buy a refrigerator with the family's income.

    You plated it beautifully. I think it didn't set because you did not prepare the gelatine directly on the stove. Its been at least 30 years since I made that but if I remember correctly... Love your kitchen and Fridge and dress.

    • @WithLoveKristina
      @WithLoveKristina  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's probably true! The recipe said to sprinkle it over cold milk and then stir over hot water till it melted, but I'm thinking it needed to be hotter.

    We had cottage cheese in jello at most of our big family dinners when I was growing up. I think we kept doing it at least until I was in college, maybe after. Ours wasn't solid white, and there were several different recipes I can recall my mom's family making over the years, but the most iconic was orange with cottage cheese and canned mandarin orange wedges? We were particularly likely to have that at Easter. I think we also went through a phase where we made the trendy sparkling jello that was advertised in... the 90s? I think?
    Then there came a point where more of my relatives started avoiding sugar or took up a special diet, and jello salads with dinner fell out of favor. Honestly, I don't know the recipe for the Moffatt jello, but I would consider making it again for myself someday. It was good, and I kind of miss it now!

    I have the same mixer that my husband bought me for 40 dollars and it’s my favorite vintage cook items I own, it came with both bowls for it as well as the juicer that attaches to the top. I do all of my holiday baking with it and I have a huge family for cookie deliveries. Loved the video and I smiled when I seen the mixer, great job.

    My family has a holiday jello made with, lime and lemon jello, crushed walnuts, canned pineapple pieces, cream cheese and cottage cheese. It’s chunky and not blended. It grossed me out as a kid, but now I find it delicious. 🤷‍♀️

    • @WithLoveKristina
      @WithLoveKristina  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol this sounds like what my grandma used to make. I think it was cottage cheese, whipped cream, jello squares, pineapple, and... mandarin oranges maybe? I HATED it as a kid.

    Sorry, one more hint. When slicing up strawberries and macerating them in sugar so they form that delicious, sweet, slightly thick sauce do this.
    Microwave one quarter cup of strawberry jam for a few seconds to loosen it up. Stir it til cool...then stir in your berries to coat. If necessary drain a little liquid off the berries first.
    It will make your berries a beautiful deep red and heighten the flavor. People will wonder where and how you find such beautiful, flavorful strawberries. And you can add smile as you pass them more knowing it's a dead easy thing.

      It's from Lowe's! It's a Galanz 10 cubic foot refrigerator. So, it's apartment sized which we needed because this kitchen was built in 1920 and the refrigerator space is small. But we have an extra freezer in our pantry, so it's fine that the fridge is smaller than a modern one!

  • @tonyboloni64
    @tonyboloni64 ปีที่แล้ว

    It didn't set properly because the proteins in the gelatin need the boiling temp to uncoil. As they re-coil during cooling and after the boiling temp, they tighten back up and set.
    PS: this is why Jello became so popular. It is far more forgiving of temps, that are less than spot on, than gelatin.

      I KNOW. Honestly my brain stopped recognizing the years passing in like 2010 so anytime I realize something new about how long ago things were I’m like 🙀 Like, kids born in 2000 can LEGALLY DRINK IN THE US NOW
