    If any of you are wondering why the judge is called "Worm, Your Honor", it's because worms throughout the entire album represent the part of the main character's mind that is decayed. The part that caused him to go insane. In another of the best songs of the album, Hey You, the lyrics say "But it was only fantasy. The wall was too high, as you can see. No matter how he struggled, he could not break free. And the worms ate into his brain."
    The wall is the part of his mind that shut him off from the outside world and caused him to lock himself in his hotel room in a Howard Hughes-like manner. This album is probably the deepest thing ever made.

      I read that they removed it because the film to go with the song was too repetitive, and featured in montages elsewhere in the film already.

    Easily one of the best things about this sequence is that, while it's all surreal and nonsensical, Pink still doesn't "fit in" at all - in the close-up scenes, he's presented with a rough, sketched art style. He almost looks skeletal, and possesses a barely human face with hollow, staring eyes.
    So in a way, the creepiest, most unsettling thing in the whole sequence - despite all that is going on - _is Pink himself._

    • @OreadNYC
      @OreadNYC 8 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Well, it's fairly obvious that this "trial" is taking place inside Pink's own mind and is either a dream or a hallucination (the result of drugs and/or his increasing mental instability). A common symptom of psychosis, whether drug-induced or not, is depersonalization in which a person loses his or her sense of identity as an individual and/or as a human being. This isn't the first time it's happened him, either -- this representation of himself looks a lot like the vaguely human-shaped blob he imagined turning into after the song "Comfortably Numb", the one which only had holes where the eyes and mouth would be.
      You want to go down the rabbit hole a bit more? Consider this. Since this is taking place entirely inside Pink's mind, this suggests that all the characters -- the lawyer, the judge, the teacher his wife, his mother -- are simply parts of his own fractured psyche (which implies that he's put himself on trial and is judging himself). Throughout the course of the film, it becomes very clear that Pink has been deeply affected and shaped by his relationships with three people in particular -- his mother, his teacher, his wife. His sense of identity appears to be very dependent on his interactions with them, so much so that it's almost as if he doesn't know who he really is without them. (As evidence of this, I notice that the thing which seems to set off Pink's emotional and psychological deterioration is the realization that his wife is having an affair -- this really seems to traumatize him.) So when Pink's psyche disintegrates and all the parts of his identity which are tied to his mother, his teacher, and his wife seem to split off and turn on him...what does he have left? Answer...not a lot, something only vaguely suggestive of a human (never mind a person named Pink with a sense of self).

    The judge is a mockery of the British legal system. He is thundering out his verdict, while quite literally talking out his ass.

    • @justinstark5732
      @justinstark5732 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      interesting interpretation. I always assumed it was because since this entire trial is a symbol of pink reevaluating his life that the judge was representing pink himself. How pink sees himself as an asshole and is punishing himself for all of his isolationism.

    • @ezride445
      @ezride445 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Could be both

    • @OreadNYC
      @OreadNYC 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +Justin Stark Especially since the other characters refer to the Judge as "Worm." Since worms in the film are used as a symbol for Pink's increasing insanity, this suggests the possibility that Pink is in his own mind both defendant and judge and (which is far from uncommon among people who suffer from mood disorders such as depression) far more harsh on himself than most other people would be on him. Actually, from a psychological perspective, it could even be argued that ALL of the characters in this song are potentially representations of Pink -- perhaps on some level, he accepts and agrees with the criticisms of the schoolteacher and his wife as well as having mixed feelings about his mother (loving her but also feeling suffocated by her).

    The Wall could be interpreted as a man becoming conscious of what life is, and not being able to handle it. He is learning what life "is" while he is young but the death of his father, and the idea of he himself dying are introduced at a young age. His school tries to make him a part of their "reality" which he rebels against and is subsequently shown what its like to be an outsider and ridiculed. He resorts to his mother for comfort, she is overbearing and puts all her own fears/problems on him, making the world seem even more fucked. Pink then tries to buy into the "public concept of what life is", he strives for the fancy cars, womern and a big house because "that's what life is about". But he finds out the hard way that material objects are merely a distraction. He keeps lingering on the truth/fact that nobody knows what life is, and he interprets this as meaning that life is pointless. This makes him depressed, and hard to relate to. After he is left behind and is mistreated by a number of people, he finds something in life that he knows for sure. And that is what makes him angry, he becomes a "bully". A bully in his mind he is in control of his life by controlling and ridiculing others. He becomes a walking hammer, waiting to bring himself down on others (nails) and in this way he feels better and stronger about his own existence. Though in the story he does show regret and puts himself on trial in his head.

    When somebody shows you what this society really is and we finally accept to see it...that's the time to feel this inexplicable, thin, disturbing sense of fear.
    Fear that if society wants suddenly turn against us, we are nothing, guinea-pigs, puppets victims of any kind of punishment and destruction.
    That's the hidden feeling that scares us about this video. A Kafka musical nightmare.

      the snake girl is his wife, and their relationship was so totally contingent on sex that you see her head coming out of her vagina several times, which is basically when she realized he sucked and left his ass, and the ass is himself trying to find a way to cope with his mistakes and tear down the wall to live his life, and the only way to do that is to manufacture somebody to oppress and punish him, the way he's seen himself his whole life, a victim.

    Since it's a given somebody will say something about how music was supposedly better then and it's now shit etc etc. may I remind you of Disco music, or any other mainstream number. Every decade has their "beibers" if you can't find good music now it's probably because you aren't looking. Plenty of places to listen to music other than fm radio right? Get on Spotify and type Texas blues or independent, you won't be disappointed

    Pink learned something through the schoolmaster's testimony (he became the very thing he opposed in his childhood) and through his wife's testimony (her affair happened because of his neglect).
    But what exactly does Pink realize through his mother's testimony? I'm not quite sure...should he have remained under his mother's wing without obtaining autonomy and independence? Is that what that sequence seems to tell?

    This is why this film should be considered one of the best musical movies ever made, 40 years after this movie came out. Thought provoking, disturbing, darkly funny, sad...all parts of the human experience explored in depth. And the issues that it talks about--mental illness, the effects of war on families, the hypocrisy of the school system and society at large--are still unfortunately relevant today as they were 40 years prior. You can tell that this was a very personal passion project for Waters and Scarfe, as there are autobiographical elements in there...Barrett's illness, Scarfe's sickly bedridden childhood, Roger's childhood with a dead dad and constant bullying and ostracizing at school...I remember watching this in full at the age of 13 and being blown away by it.

    Pretty sure the worms are a metaphor for things like Depression and Anxiety, those deep self destructive thoughts like "it's all my fault", "I'm not good enough", "I'm a horrible person".
    It's basically the worst things you think about yourself, in this case, Floyd blames himself for the suffering of others even if it's not entirely his fault.
