      What got you into it if you don't mind my asking? I was first intrigued by the camcorder NVG (night vision goggles) footage here in CA of what appeared to be a space war with Mother Ships, drones/fighters, and it was filmed and witnessed by many. I can't find the video any longer.
      Oh yeah, my reason for the question is because I too am interested in phenomena outside of our visual spectrum which people don't realize is vast.

    I did the same to my Nex 5R and it also had the connection to the UV/IR cut glass filter in front of the sensor. I watched it under a microscope and I'm pretty sure the thing is a piezoelectric crystal which is used to shake dust off the sensor when you turn the camera on or off. It's pretty much the same kind of thing you'd find in playing postcards.

    TIP: Buy a bunch of reasonable sized (depending on your use) Neodymium magnets and just slap one or two on the rear most section of the driver shaft, near the handle. It'll give it stronger magnetizatation and you can stick your screws there for easy access.

    Hi, I just wanted to know what's the size of clear filter you use for A7r

  • @nickt6965
    @nickt6965 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I had my A7RIII converted to full spectrum by a company here in Melbourne (Camera Clinic) and they replace the cut filter with clear glass and now I can use (Astromik/STC) clip filters, for IR with fast shutter speeds and low ISO on any lens and can see everything through the EVF and they also make a IR/UV clip filter to return the camera back to "normal" in a few seconds
    * Astronomik OWB Type 3 clip filter returns the camera back to normal
    * Astronomik ProPlanet 742 filter allows you to flip the Red and Blue channels in PS and produce "colourised" IR photos (my favourite)
    * Astronomik ProPlanet 807 filter gives a more black and white feel but still quite eerie
    * STC Astro-Multispectra Filter removes (reduces) light pollution for your astrophotography and but captures Hα, Hβ, OIII and SII
    My biggest issue shooting IR is lens selection, finding lenses that have little or no hot spots or flaring has not been easy, but I found 2 in my collection that are pretty good
    I have found that the more glass elements and coatings the poorer the performance, in this case cheaper and older can actually be better

      I've had those for Canon but I didn't know they made them for Sony. I will check it out.

      Was the Camera clinic option expensive for your Sony camera ?

    • @nickt6965
      @nickt6965 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bioarach about aud$600 but I chose the full spectrum option so I could use 3 clip filters that allow me to IR at either 742nm or 802nm or normal mode
      I have since purchased another astro clip filter
      These filters are a few hundred dollars each, but make shooting much easier as you can use any lens you want even the wide angle ones with fixed hoods regardless of the thread size
      I haven't been able to take the 742nm filter out of the camera because I enjoy it so much
      The hardest thing is to find lenses that don't have a hot spot
      What camera are you thinking of modifying?

    • @bioarach
      @bioarach 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nickt6965 Thanks a lot for the detailed answer. I'm planning to modify a Sony a6000. I'm a biologist and I intend to use this camera to model different scenes to what animals with different visual systems can see. For example birds and bees can see in the UV spectrum so I need to be able to capture UV photographs to merge them with the visible light spectrum to convert them with software.

    • @nickt6965
      @nickt6965 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bioarach Sounds like a very interesting project
      but be aware that glass blocks some forms of UV(B) and the lens coatings might also play havoc to your plans
      You will need a specialised lens
      We used plastic disposable cuvettes and Uni for UV-Vis spectrophotometry - so cheap plastic lenses might work better for you than Gmaster lenses
      You can also try a "pinhole" lens - it doesn't have any elements to tamper with the light but they have very small apertures which means that will have to deal with higher ISO or slow shutter speeds
      good luck

Then another $$$$ on rear magnetic ir rear filters. All i have to do now is sell some prints to recover my investment… that wont take long- after using circular ir filters previously im hoping the rear mag filters will be game changer- especially for a couple voigtlanders i own that have no front threads- will no slit more about it in a few weeks…. I converted my Rx100V, quite a bit less involved than this but still extremely nervewracking. The hot mirror snapped while removing it(it's only wafer-thin) so that was a moment of panic. Also got shocked by the flash cap no less than 3 times. Not too bad overall, still wouldn't reccomend. If you're just getting started in infrared, perhaps modify a cheap old point and shoot, some you just remove the back cover/screen and the sensor is right there, having only removed like 5 screws.

      Dust free so far. I'm not sure if I mentioned it in the video but I vacuumed and dusted my entire studio then washed the floors and wet the floors down again before I pulled the sensor. Not really a clean room but more like a dust free paint booth.

    • @jkulczyn
      @jkulczyn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LavikkaPhotography That's more than enough :) I've "destroyed" a few cameras myself and it's not that hard to get dust-free filter.
      Some cameras are built a bit better - they contain regular protective glass (which BTW cuts most of the UV) with UV/IR filter underneath. The trick is just to quickly remove UV/IR and close the lid again. No need to buy any special glass. That's the beauty od mirrorless :)
      Looking forward to seing your pictures. Myself I drift to the 760 nm range. 950 requires a lot of light and isn't very practical in my geographic region. What's more interesting - false color seems great at first but gets boring very quickly. :)

    When you remove dust filter. The focus point ( distance flange) become shorter. And you loose infinity focus.

      Monochrome conversion involves removing the microlenses (Bayer matrix) on the sensor itself -- a very delicate operation indeed. It has the advantage of improved resolution but microlenses do in fact help with light gathering. So there is no exposure gain by removing the colour filters.

    23:20 , that's not a discharge stuff, it have anti-static coating, but the whole thing is the ultrasound sensor cleaner (it's like a simple glass with no optical effect, but it keep avoid the dust from the sensor). So if this "filter" get some dust, the camera can clean it with ultrasound vibrations. I recommend to put it back, useful little stuff. Soo, yeah, another thing.
