I'm self taught all through you tube, constant practising and constantly watching nail tutorials for the past 4 yrs im from the UK so I don't need a licence to be a nail tech , I'm now running my own nail salon from home and doing amazing 😀
This one was really needed. I just got all of my certifications and building clientele is so difficult. Everyone who says they’ll support you won’t. Few will! And some will return and those ones make me feel like one day everyone else will see how dope I am just as my regulars do! How can we attract more clientele not in our “circle” help! 😂💙
We recommend watching this video we did where we took a call and talked about building new clientele really hope it helps!: th-cam.com/video/TERNI8kW6-4/w-d-xo.html
I’m in the same boat as you girl!!! I never realized how hard it would be to get clients in, & just like you said everyone who says they’d support me are no where. and thats okay :)
Keep on working and practicing because you will get there!! I’m still building my clientele as well. But as you get better you’ll start attracting all of the people! If you post on social media just keep posting. People will see your progress even if you’re not proud of it just share it. Someone will love it. And just know word of mouth is the BEST way to get clients. The internet is not. You will get some but majority will come from word of mouth and you putting yourself out there. Wear your work. If people compliment you talk about your business. Comment on other people’s nails if you see they get them done. It works. (Not 100% of the time but that’s the way life is)
I remember when I asked for a special gel design and my tech shyly told me it cost more. Of course it costs more, it's a premium service. I expect it to cost more. But I know not all customers react well, but I think most reasonable people understand. The people who don't understand, you'll already know because you already have other issues with them.
I’m in school now and I feel like I’ve been wasting my time. I’ve learned nothing but I’m going to continue attending and thank you guys for the daily videos. They have taught me a lot
I was so excited when I enrolled in school, then I realized I was not @ school to learn to do nails. I was taught how to do a basic mani and pedi! Moreover I was taught how to pass my state exam in which I did! Im constantly learning how to do nails, I know I will be an amazing Nail Tech! YN is helping me get there❣️
Failing should be called Learning. It's kinda essential to fail because otherwise we don't move forward. We think we know everything and no-one does, well except maybe Habib lol.
That is a very good point “to look at is as a business and not a hobby” everyone tells me “ a nail tech is good, but don’t you think it’s better as a hobby and you could do a REAL JOB, I’m like “this is a real job!”. Very good video! ❤️😍😍
I'm so surprised to hear so many people say they didn't learn nails at school. I attended cosmetology school and was taught hair, nails, piercings, extentions and we had to do so many services before we could graduate. When I walked out of school I felt 100% ready to take clients on my own because I had my instructors to critique my work for months. They took the time to teach me what I would need to be successful. Sadly both schools I attended have since closed down. I had to go to two schools because I stopped during the final days of my pregnancy and when I was ready to go back my original school had closed down.
Listening to both of u reminded me of my struggling days. I am so glad to have had those days too, made me stronger, taught me loads of patience and fortunately it's behind me bt still part of me.
After learning sanitation and disinfecting in school we began learning acrylic, Dip, and polish application. Now a lot of learning was done by trial and error and TH-cam but we got to actually accept clients to practice on. I feel lucky!
Thank you so much for your videos. Your education helped me stay off drugs, rebuild my life with the goal of opening my own salon. It's just Nails at the moment. But in 2 years after I finish my hairdresser qualification, it's going to be hair & nails. I didn't know where or how to start, & then I found you guys on you tube. Literally changed my life. I fell into drug after my daughter died. I have 3 boys, 18, 16 & 11. My 16 to is gay, & he will be helping me. It's a small country town, so the salon also helps with him being accepted by the community. Thank you & keep them coming, I've still got so much to learn.
I wish I had known that after school I had to go out and learn to do proper nails on my own. It is sad how little you are taught in school and it is much worse now than it was when I went. I learnt more from your videos than I ever did at school. Thanks for all you guys are doing.❤
You guys are so freaking amazing. I did my gel and acrylic courses about 8 months back and got no info such as this. But then lockdown happened and all went to %#$@. Have not recovered since. I really wish I could have afforded to get a YN course and products to start me off 😪. Maybe in the future hey. Love you guys to bits.
Graduated Robert Fiance in Florida last Month. We had to so 95 services, pedicures, full sets, acrylic, hard gel…we had outside clients and we worked on students and ourselves. First hour of every class was lecture. The rest was all practical.
I am SO lucky I found a great school who actually teaches nails. I just started and am already learning. Gel, wraps, 3D art and of course acrylic, she teaches it all and I’m so lucky 😊
I am a broken record but it is true. You are the best people who help everyone in the same business. You want everyone to be the best they can. I wish more people were like you guys. What a great place this world would be. I love you all.
I always enjoy every bizztalk👏 you guys are very inspirational. I've been in the nail industry for about a year but i have learned sooo much just by watching your videos and i really want to thank you guys for that. Like seriously you guys are my fav in the nail industry 😍 Greetings from Boston
Thanks Tracey and Habib, for helping. Tracey what do you mean by charging extra for long or extra long nails? Is for length or time constraint? Thank you. Also you can't possibly fail if you never try.
You are so right about school. When I attended, I assumed that I would come out knowing how to do fantastic nails. NO. The info was at absolute best, basic and gave me a little bit of a feel of working on others and passing the state board tests. My learning has been through videos and tons of trial and error and successes on myself and a few friends. In my area? The market is heavily over saturated and is very much family type run businesses and I do not speak their language nor would I work for such little money (they charge like $20.00 for a full extension set!) . It has been impossible to find a position as no one wants to hire someone just out of school. The rules here in my state are extremely strict about licensed nail technicians and where and how they are allowed to work. Sometimes? I feel like my hands are being tied. Its something I so much love to do and yet its impossible to get started. That is what I wish I had known - that a license and hard work does not guarantee a job. Yes, I work on my friends and myself, but I want to be able to earn money doing this. Failure does not faze me; everyone is going to mess up. For me, it’s just a chance to improve my skills. I just wish I could find a salon that would give me a chance to prove my abilities. I am good at art and have become very proficient in acrylic and proficient in gel (I like acrylics so much better!). I just wish I had known that there is no guarantee of employment and how impossible my state makes self-employment for nail technicians.
Well.....i guess I got lucky for schooling. I live in a small town in Canada with the nearest beauty school 2 hours away. I started looking on line and found the ONLY on line Fully Qualified Nail Technician course. They used Milady Standard Textbook and i had so send my practical assignments in for grading via mail. I feel that I got a superb training and understanding of Nail enhancements, manicures and pedicures. Mirage Spa Education is where i learned and I currently have my own home studio😁. Yes, practice makes perfect, but I'm slowly getting better and faster.
You are right!!!! They only teach you how to pass the test! I wish more people knew that, and the same is true of hair school. It’s true, there are no overnight booming businesses after your certification. Every job, in whatever field, takes honing and effort to grow and prosper. To add to your comment on charging adequately, I feel like it’s important to charge based on your level of expertise. If you feel like you can’t raise your prices over time, remember that people who work for corporations of any size get annual raises. Why are we any different? Know your worth! The manager of your store makes more than the checker because of his level of experience and effort.
I was a nail tech for 17 years. I left the business in 2004... will be heading back to school for my licensing. Thank you so so much for the reminders😖. My memory of what it was like starting out was not like the reality I endured 🤔Your advice is much appreciated.
Thank you for having done this video. I went the cheapest route. The fancy school I wanted to go to didn't teach anything and was 10x higher in price. Keep putting out information. Never know who it'll help
How did I miss this video?!? I am feeling so validated right now, I cannot tell you how many arguments I’ve gotten into just by saying schools don’t teach nails!!! Some people have gotten downright nasty, to the point where I am sometimes afraid to post ANYTHING. Eh, I usually get over that pretty quickly but still-Tracy, THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS!!! Does anyone else thinks it’s silly to HAVE to pay $20,000 for the ability to do nails, while NOT being taught how and having to learn on your own anyway??? And those people who think they should get extra without paying extra, they are few and far between, but don’t let them run your show. If they don’t want to pay they don’t get the service. I never understood people who think EVERYTHING is open to haggling. Your 3rd is the most important-thinking you can’t make any mistakes and have to be absolutely perfect, this only drives you insane. Once I swallowed that down, I got better. And better and better and better. Every mistake gave me a lesson, every lesson is learning, learning allows me to someday become a pro. I’ve only applied this logic for the past year maybe, and the progress I’ve made? Huge! I cannot stress this enough!
These schools don't teach you anything about nails. I wish I had a practice hand and they worked with the students more on nail shapes and product ratio
Yeah they should cover more about nails and specifics, that is why we really enjoyed doing our One Week Courses, we can see the improvement/help in just that time.
Yes very true. They dont sit down with you, and teach you how to build nails. Very disappointing. Thanks to people like you all, this is how most of us are learning how to sculpt nails. Thank you all very much.
Thank you very much for your words of wisdom. 💕Very informative. I've been learning to do my own nails since quarantine (for fun) & am continuing to learn from you guys & other nail techs. 🥰 Thanks again for sharing your skills, your support, & advice.
My saying is this.... if at first you don’t succeed, redefine success! Success is different for everyone at every level so just remember that ANY success, no matter how small, deserves to and should be celebrated!!! Great content as usual and.... you just know I’m commenting on the reappearance of that guy on the table...lmao 🤣😂🤣 and the vacation did him well cuz he looks GREAT!!!! Love y’all ❤️❤️❤️
I can relate to all this!! Failure is not a negative bc so much more positivity and success comes from failure in many many aspects in life! ❤️ Love you guys and appreciate all you do for us!!
My goal was to start school and become a nail tech (for a side job) in 2020. Do you think this is possible during a pandemic? I’m already a nurse, BUT I’ve always wanted to do nails and work out of my home! What is your suggestion on how I should pursue this during this time?
I so agree with Tracy. I was 58 when I went to school for nails and hair.. I came out I knew sanitation but not how to do anything, Paid all that money!
Thank you so much for this clip. I think it is ok to be scared as well. Like the wonderful Paul Newman said in a movie "You can't be brave unless you are scared"
Thank you for this. I am 1yr in the home business and I dont charge much for my art. I spend 2 hrs creating a masterpiece but charge $30 canadian for art and gel polish manicure. Only because I am a newbie and scared and not very confident.
I am currently enrolled in artificial nails class. Umm if I had not been watching you and a few others on you tube I would not have learnt anything MCCollage in Canada teaches nothing. I asked my teacher yesterday how to sculpt a coffin and she told me to check youtube😠what the heck am I paying for? Oh and she hates gel only acrylic and crappy product for us to learn on sooo disappointing. I have since bought young nails product and now I can actually do acrylic thanks to Greg and all of you so thank you.
In 1993, I drove 120 miles a day to become a cosmetologist cause that was the closet school to where I lived. In the middle of winter, in the snow and ice right at the base of the Rocky Mt. in Colorado. They went through 5 or 6 instructors while I was there. No!! They didn’t teach you anything but they took your money. Sad. I’m doing great now but it’s definitely from me teaching myself.
I wish i would have known i could start nail school at age 16 in my state. I would have started my career earlier! I wish i knew earlier about Slow Season. I would have saved myself some stress.😵😁💅
I went to Beauty College 30+ years ago. We definitely didn't know that we wouldn't be taught how to use nails. New techs will learn more watching TH-cam videos about how to do nails. I also thought I would get my license and be busy 8 hours a day... without Social Media, we had to advertise in mailers and newspapers. It's taking me 30 years and a pandemic to finally charge my worth! Tracy- what you talking about ....I never failed!!! Lol!! Yeah right!🤪
So if you don’t learn how to do nails in school, where do we learn? Where do we go from there? Besides TH-cam which is amazing and I thank you all for your videos! But hands on learning? Thanks!
Great question, aside from youtube there are places offering online courses, prior to COVID19 we offered a 1 week course for licensed techs. So there's definitely post school salon learning out there. Check out our upcoming online classes: www.youngnails.com/upcoming-classes/
The 3 things I wish I knew before becoming a nail tech are: 1) All the drama and backstabbing there is in the industry 2) The lack of salons that hire nail techs. It’s so hard to find a job and forces you to rent (in my area) 3) Always research the classes you take for continued education. Some who teach, shouldn’t. I was so excited to take a continued education class and the ones “teaching” showed one thing and then talked shit about other techs out there. $350 down the drained
I “fail” a lot let’s call it learning. Mostly in art but I never give up until I get it. I will not let it beat me !! I also practice say a design before my clients appointment so when it comes to the day bam it works. Great video....can I ask so in a business you have foot traffic much easier to get walk ins. If trying to get a business up and running at home how do you do this? I hand out business cards but nothing. Iv told about my f/book page nothing. I was going to do flyers but my neighbours told me that’s the old way you pay on insta these days, well A friend of mine did that and I only got two clients. I’m thinking about stalking people in the car park and just walking right up to them and say hey what do you guys suggest? I do know it’s a bit hard with Covid at the moment but I need clients
Do your own nails crazy designs and when people say "I love your nails" swoop in with the "I do them myself!" Helps let people know. They may not book right away, but they do remember!!! ❤️ good luck love!
That is so tru because I wanted to do Just nails my Self but but I had a horrible horrible teacher at my school I went to beauty School for a about a year and half than Covid-19 hit on Spring break, i did pick the cheapest school like a 2.00 day to go but any way i was so disappointed n that part of it I never cared about the hair care part
Salons where I live do not have good sanitation. They have pedi liners but they only clean their tools with soap and water and alcohol. I guess i will bring my own barbicide for my tools. It sucks but barely any of the salons where I live follow all the rules so you just have to kind of deal with it and do your own thing if you want to follow the rules i guess
Women always have money for the things they want. So if they come to u trying to lowball or get a discount they can go elsewhere ! Real friends and family want to support you and see you prosper they dont lowball you. BTW I love both of y'alls your honesty and transparency. I felt like giving up sometimes but you just have to educate yourself, keep learning, keep practicing, be patient with yourself and sometimes it is necessary to take a step back and take a break but don't give up get back to it. Watch more TH-cam tutorials and practice
For sure but I can see how it can feel overwhelming for nail techs there àre always new designs and techniques to learn and you gotta keep up with the trends and new products such as polygel though im not interested in polygel at all
Thank you. I'm 12 years in and #2 or was it #1... No #2 🤣. Write does that hit home and my #1 reason I am not more successful and it's become more of a hobby 😔
My first manicure at school was a disaster! It till haunted me today! But I learned from It ! The woman had Parkinson’s diseases and I didn’t know how to handle it!
hey i just watched this video as well as just finished my first week of nail school. Do you have any suggestins from where to start on learning art design? i watched a couple of your videos but like she said, you should know someone to ask questions to and get advise..... can you be my nail "person"???? #greysanatomy haha If you read this, thanks for your time...... Maddie
en la escuela te dicen si vienen clientes con hongos hay que mandarlos al doctor y no hacer el servicio,y si todo hacemos eso creo que perdemos el 60 % de clientes
I’m confused are you saying in nail school they aren’t teaching anything about nails?? Lol can someone elaborate exactly what that means? I went to school in NYC never did a nail in my life and learned how to do nails in school
just a constructive comment; ye might want to start referring to techs & clients as they because times are changing and there are people of all genders as both techs and clients. it can be quite isolating hearing professionals say "she" when you are not a female in the industry. all love, thanks for the amazingly helpful content
How do you deal with when you're a new nail tech training and you feel bad about yourself? I'm new and started training and the girls were talking about my shaky hands in vietnamese and it was very degrading :( Update: today I went to learn again and the other employees were very nice to me helping me learn despite the language barrier!!!
Find a salon that you fit in with. Don't beat yourself up over their ignorance. They were new once and had to struggle like all of us nail techs. Good luck!
EVEYTHING THATS HAS BEEN SAID ON THIS VIDEO IS TRUE !! you don’t learn nothing in beauty school beside infection control, clean and disinfect, and how lazy your instructor is ! I love failing as weird as it sound because I always learn something valuable and with wining is already something I knew deep inside I can achieve. please charge what you are absolutely worth!!!!!
I‘m 18 and JUST got an acrylic kit from you guys. I’m super nervous going into the nail world because I know I can pretty hard on myself if something doesn’t come out perfect. Gonna start watching a lot of these videos and hopefully build some confidence & knowledge!
I'm self taught all through you tube, constant practising and constantly watching nail tutorials for the past 4 yrs im from the UK so I don't need a licence to be a nail tech , I'm now running my own nail salon from home and doing amazing 😀
You go girl boss!

I’m in school now and I feel like I’ve been wasting my time. I’ve learned nothing but I’m going to continue attending and thank you guys for the daily videos. They have taught me a lot

You're not alone, and when you think you are think of us! You got this!

Glad it was helpful!
As a new tech in this industry I must say I love love love this series 💜💜💜

These schools don't teach you anything about nails. I wish I had a practice hand and they worked with the students more on nail shapes and product ratio
Yeah they should cover more about nails and specifics, that is why we really enjoyed doing our One Week Courses, we can see the improvement/help in just that time.
Yes very true. They dont sit down with you, and teach you how to build nails. Very disappointing. Thanks to people like you all, this is how most of us are learning how to sculpt nails. Thank you all very much.
Been in school since May. Learning nails from. Tracy and Greg. Learning how to survive the stink-eye glares from my instructor (i
😁 Best of luck in school! Thank you for making us part of that journey!
Leah S We’ll get through this..Chin up.You got this!
Kelley Wood thank you girl!!!! Yessss!!!!!!! ❤️❤️
Love you guys! Watched this video at exactly the right time in my nail tech journey.
We ❤️ you too! Thank you for watching!
Thank you very much for your words of wisdom. 💕Very informative. I've been learning to do my own nails since quarantine (for fun) & am continuing to learn from you guys & other nail techs. 🥰 Thanks again for sharing your skills, your support, & advice.
You are so welcome! Keep practicing consistently
Love y’all ❤️❤️❤️
Well said, agree 100 percent, Haha, the vacation was full of sun and water 🌱
Nail school doesn’t teach you nails say what?!!So glad y’all told me lol my nail school was cancelled for now, so I guess it was a sign! 🤣 !
I can relate to all this!! Failure is not a negative bc so much more positivity and success comes from failure in many many aspects in life! ❤️ Love you guys and appreciate all you do for us!!
Absolutely!! Love that, we appreciate you !
My goal was to start school and become a nail tech (for a side job) in 2020. Do you think this is possible during a pandemic?
I’m already a nurse, BUT I’ve always wanted to do nails and work out of my home! What is your suggestion on how I should pursue this during this time?
awesome talk! thank you for the videos you are doing!
I resonate so much with this!!!!!
Yes I have learned so much from you guys🥰🥰🥰
I so agree with Tracy. I was 58 when I went to school for nails and hair.. I came out I knew sanitation but not how to do anything, Paid all that money!
Exactly.
Thank you so much for this clip. I think it is ok to be scared as well. Like the wonderful Paul Newman said in a movie "You can't be brave unless you are scared"
Exactly!!
Thank you for this. I am 1yr in the home business and I dont charge much for my art. I spend 2 hrs creating a masterpiece but charge $30 canadian for art and gel polish manicure. Only because I am a newbie and scared and not very confident.
Im so glad I watched this video thanks for the advice both of you ❤️ it’s ok to fail 😊 it makes you better !
You are so welcome!
Thanks for this video 🙂❤️
My pleasure 😊
Tracy givin off some fall vibes with her cute clothes! Thanks for these videos. 3 years in and loving the life
You are so welcome! Thank you so much for watching and being part of team YN
Oh wow, it's our pleasure, so glad we can help! Definitely keep practicing!
Wow that is a story to tell, but think of how that experience lead you to where you are today! Thank you for sharing!
YoungNailsInc very true
I wish i would have known i could start nail school at age 16 in my state. I would have started my career earlier! I wish i knew earlier about Slow Season. I would have saved myself some stress.😵😁💅
Those are the things that time experience shows!
Loved this!! Thank you guys! 💕
Our pleasure!
Lol!! Yeah right!🤪
Haha changing the word failing to learning officially! 😁
The 3 things I wish I knew before becoming a nail tech are:
1) All the drama and backstabbing there is in the industry
2) The lack of salons that hire nail techs. It’s so hard to find a job and forces you to rent (in my area)
3) Always research the classes you take for continued education. Some who teach, shouldn’t. I was so excited to take a continued education class and the ones “teaching” showed one thing and then talked shit about other techs out there. $350 down the drained
I’m currently a student and I agree that they don’t teach you anything about nails! 😒
It's really unfortunate, remember lots of resources online, practice practice....then practice some more!
They don’t even let us use drills at my school it’s crazy
Whitley Brajá what! My school pushes using files but they do allow e-files
Felicia Jolly thank you 🙏🏼 but I do this already. I should start carrying my business cards and whip one out when asked. But thank you for responding
Friendly reminder if you trim that plant to put the trimmings in a cup of water and you’ll get more free plants lol
Thank you for the advices 💖💅
You are so welcome!
Schools teach you how to pass the board exams and that's all. YN videos are the best!
❤️💖
Thank u both
Our pleasure!
Sanitation is in style, especially during these times you have to make sure you protect yourself and your clients!
I don't look at anything as failure. Everything is fixable, and learnable
Love that!!
Patience, consistency are both very key when practicing! Also every moment is an opportunity to learn more, especially in nails.
For sure but I can see how it can feel overwhelming for nail techs there àre always new designs and techniques to learn and you gotta keep up with the trends and new products such as polygel though im not interested in polygel at all
That's so so me I'm so scared of doing hair coloring hair all I realy care about is doing Nails and facial and mens hair cut
I went to grabber and the administration sucked but my teacher was great and she taught us nails
Love great teachers, they are priceless!!
Thank you. I'm 12 years in and #2 or was it #1... No #2 🤣. Write does that hit home and my #1 reason I am not more successful and it's become more of a hobby 😔
My first manicure at school was a disaster! It till haunted me today! But I learned from
It ! The woman had Parkinson’s diseases and I didn’t know how to handle it!
Every moment is a learning experience!
YoungNailsInc yes! Now I know how to handle it working in a nursing home doing nails
hey i just watched this video as well as just finished my first week of nail school. Do you have any suggestins from where to start on learning art design? i watched a couple of your videos but like she said, you should know someone to ask questions to and get advise..... can you be my nail "person"????
#greysanatomy haha
If you read this, thanks for your time......
Maddie
LOOWWEerd ExpectAAaations 😂🎶 truer words never spoken!
Lol yes!
en la escuela te dicen si vienen clientes con hongos hay que mandarlos al doctor y no hacer el servicio,y si todo hacemos eso creo que perdemos el 60 % de clientes
I’m confused are you saying in nail school they aren’t teaching anything about nails?? Lol can someone elaborate exactly what that means? I went to school in NYC never did a nail in my life and learned how to do nails in school
I think they mean you’re taught just the very basics and how to pass state board!
What cosmetology/nail school did you go to in NYC?
@@JolieTueurLoup Christine Valmy
I'm in the middle of taken my written test right now
Best of luck!! You can do this!
just a constructive comment; ye might want to start referring to techs & clients as they because times are changing and there are people of all genders as both techs and clients. it can be quite isolating hearing professionals say "she" when you are not a female in the industry. all love, thanks for the amazingly helpful content
Hi I went on your website but saw that you can only order from you if you are a nail tech 😭😭😭😭
How do you deal with when you're a new nail tech training and you feel bad about yourself? I'm new and started training and the girls were talking about my shaky hands in vietnamese and it was very degrading :(
Update: today I went to learn again and the other employees were very nice to me helping me learn despite the language barrier!!!
Find a salon that you fit in with. Don't beat yourself up over their ignorance. They were new once and had to struggle like all of us nail techs. Good luck!
Love the update, never be afraid to ask questions, kindness exists and we all started the same way at some point! Just don't give up.
That it’s not that easy
100%
Three things I wish I knew: How to do taxes, business and more anatomy. Now, you need social media training.
I totally agree with u, i especially need social training my ass is ghetto as hell
Definitely need those, and social media is definitely key for marketing your business!
