I've spent the last month researching my next laptop. I enjoyed your delivery and the cons don't really effect/bother me. I went for a I7/3070Ti which I think is the sweet spot for the resolution.

I did the same with the 360hertz and 3070. I was also surprised to find out the power brick was much sleeker then the first review videos I watched. Finding a way to carry it around was a challenge, the only solution I found was a Samsonite laptop backpack. It also didn't come with the light up pad, but over all I am happy with the purchase and plan to enjoy it for a long time.

I'm also thinking of going with the i7/3070ti combo. My heart naturally wants the i9/3080ti combo, but most laptops spec out at $1,000+ more for that and all tests I've seen show it gives, only around a 10fps increase... so $100/frame lol

Great review justin, however its almost always that the top model of any computer gets reviewed, and the results are often what you would expect from such specs. I think it would be great to at least mention the lower models with the 3060 and 3070, as im sure many people will be aiming for those. Thanks!

And I guess it would cost a fortune to get the various models of each manufacturer to review also. I get that viewer's logic though for sure. The more views we get for Justin then the more models and larger staff he'll be able to get to review various models. 😎

From what i read on the laptop version of the 3080ti it was a poor performer compared to the 3070ti less thsm 10 percent faster. This wasnt the case on the desktop versions. After reading that i would never spend all that money on it and if I end up getting the x17r2 it will be the 3070 ti for me.
I dont know about the new i7 and i9 but they have the same number of cores snd threads and with the heat generated by the i7 in some games, I would never spend all that money and get one with an i9. The i7 is looking iike it will be the most bang for the buck for laptops.

I have four generations of Alienware 17s, 17 R4 (GTX 1070), 17 R5(GTX 1070), m17 R4 (3080) and the x17 R2 (3080TI) sounds far better. Thanks for the great review. I think there is a second type of market for this kind of Laptops: Software engineer and obviously 3D artists. I am a software architect and I am also a casual gamer. I bought the fully loaded i9 version of the X17 R2 and absolutely love it. I run a lot of Docker containers and virtual machines and occasionally run 3D programs. My previous laptop was a Dell XPS 15 2020 fully loaded and I see a big difference in performance and fans noise. For non gaming stuff, I rarely ear the fans and the temperature is pretty low: 39-43 Celsius idle to about 60 when doing day to day tasks. Keep up the good work!

My r2 is on the way, it should deliver in about 10 days and I can’t wait anymore!! It’s my first top quality gaming laptop so the hype is real.
I ordered one with i9 12th gen, 3080ti, 32gb ram, 165hz, 1Tb ssd and 3 years premium support. The total cost was just about 300€ more than the r1 with the same specs but with 11th gen and 3080, so I am more than happy to pay a few more to have the top of the top, even if it is just a small boost in performance.
Also, bad thing they removed rgb trackpad but great thing they redesigned the power brick, since I’ll take the laptop on the move and the last power brick was really unmanageable.

@@andrewvrhovnik6774 a lot, really. The design is stunning, after over 4 months I still stare at it. Alienware is on another level on build quality and aesthetic when compared to other brands.
The performance are at the top. To be honest I don’t make the best use of it since I mostly play moba games or games that don’t require huge specs. But I gave Halo infinite a try and it ran perfectly smooth, at max graphic.
Only problem for me is the overheating. It’s ok when you run normal games but the temperature become really high with heavy games like Halo.
I don’t think that’s a specific problem of Alienware tho, it’s just a thing of the i9 12th gen chips, so nothing to do about that if you want that kind of hardware.

The 3080ti+ i7, with 512GB SSD and normal keyboard on Dell sells for $3249 ($50 more for 1 TB SSD). I think that’s actually a pretty decent launch price considering the Raider with the same gpu and cpu goes for $3599. Dell’s annual 10% off sales are coming next month, could be worth it then.

Me watching this video on a Alienware X17 R2. Great Laptop. I was playing on an Alienware 15 R3 hand-me-down. I could only play semi-demanding games for like 10 minutes before it would get too hot and the gameplay would start to glitch. Then I worked alotta OT, saved money, and bought me this gorgeous laptop. Also the company I work for has a partnership with Dell so I got it on an Employee discount plus BlackFriday Sale discount. This laptop does get hot especially when playing on High Settings. A simple TCC command via Bios and you it lowers it to a programmable max temperature.

Great review Justin! I have to agree with you on the x17r1 value over the x17r2. Thanks for showing how to move around Alienware's control center. One thing that stood out to me is that advanced optimus allows you to switch into dedicated gpu mode without going into the bios. With advanced optimus you can just change the setting in Nvidia's control panel. It was one of the reasons I went from the x17r1 4k screen to the 360hz x17r2 fhd screen. Do you think using even faster ddr5 RAM as it comes available will help the x17r2 stand out more?

    • @JustinTechTips

Mine doesn't push more than 75C under heavy load with fans at 100%. I really had no choice but to spend only $2800 on mine (my account had heavy discounts as it is the third 17 inch laptop I've bought since 2014). I had to get a new one as my five year old 17 R4 has an HDMI port that is going dodgy and the screen is showing darker spots that look as if there is something spilled on my screen. It has a 6GB 1060 and even till I bought this new system a few weeks ago, the old girl still rocked the latest games as I upgraded the RAM and M.2 SSDs BIG time. So far the only downside to this new X17 R2 has been the storage size. My old system with M.2s and a SATA SSD had 6TB of space while this new system is 4TB RAID 0 with no room anywhere else to add another M.2 SSD. If there had been one more port I would have moved the 2TB M.2 SSD to the new system to expand it to 6TB. Oh well. Had to pick and choose what to load on here. I can always use the external M.2 SSD case for less important things. I do still have the old system as an emergency backup. I am forced to buy laptops as I end up in hospital frequently for weeks to months at a time. A desktop and monitor would be impractical. Laptops have saved my sanity since the very first I bought back in 2002 when I was going to be hospitalized for at least a month. I forget the exact model but it was an IMB Thinkpad which was better than most other laptops at the time as it actually had a dedicated ATI GPU rather than a shared RAM GPU. It was VERY good at playing the games of the day.

After discounts it was 2800, 3.1k after tax with 2 years premium support and 2 years accident protection. Everyone was talking about how overpriced they are. I actually just got the X17 R2 i9 / 3080Ti. The performance is amazing on it, though the fans do kick in to max seemingly randomly (sometimes when afk in-game) and it's pretty loud. The system also doesn't like opening chrome when in game, because that kicks the fans to max, as well. I can live with the secondary rgb not being lit, but I do wish there was a number pad and side ports. I got the standard keyboard and it really is amazing to type on. Best keyboard I've used. Overall, the system is a beast and I love it. I kind of wish there were more screen options, but the 1080p at 360 and 1 ms response is actually pretty perfect. I will take fps over a bit of resolution any day. Like you said, and I agree, the price point and availability compared to competition is worth it if you're trying to max out.
Edit: I also want to add, actually, that I am disappointed that HDR seems to not be supported for this screen. I would have expected it be standard on a system of this price point.

Which worries me because then you don't know if you're actually doing damage to the system. One thing: You may want to get in touch with Dell Fuhrer about the speakers. I have a X17 R2 and haven't experienced any of those audio issues. Granted it's no 16' MacBook Pro but I've been generally impressed with the speaker output of this device. It sounds like maybe you have a bad speaker or need to futz with Dolby's software? Dell's/Alienwares infamous lackadaisical quality control might be rearing it's ugly head here.
Also for anyone wondering: IMPE; if anyone is planning of getting one of these, and you're just using it to game and watch videos, I'd strongly recommend saving yourself the money and get 16GB RAM config. It's upgradeable later and shaves a nice chunk off the price tag. Mine with 16GB doesn't really effect gaming or benchmark performance all that much in my experience if at all. Maybe a few frames.

How are you, Justin? Greetings from Australia! Thank you so much for your reviews! I’ve found them to be extremely insightful and informative and I’m certain a great deal of others share such sentiments and appreciate the work and time you’ve dedicated to educate us and put us in a better position that will hopefully enable us to make more informed purchasing decisions.
Do you reckon that Dell will do the same thing they did with the R1 last year and unlock the i7? Either way, the i7 would still be a better purchase for value for both work and play, right? From what I understand, if they choose to keep it locked, it will still run cooler than the i9 and perform extremely similar as it’s the same chip really only missing the higher clock speeds, and if they do choose to unlock it, that would once again render the i9 chip essentially a waste of a few hundred bucks.
Both your advice and David’s have been so helpful guiding me through my purchasing decision, proving very helpful in my research these last few months, and I’m just about at the end stretch. I’ve settled on an X17 R2 to upgrade from my old five-year-old laptop since currently, I’m sitting on a quite sizeable, meaty twenty percent student discount that will bag me an R2 for only 600 or so AUD more than a comparable R1. And while money does not really concern me, it still doesn’t sit right with me to just blow hundreds so frivolously on a marginal at best, possibly redundant upgrade. In my case, what configuration would you recommend the most? What would you opt for considering for both a healthy mix of work and play? What would be your ideal config?
Please feel free to correct any gaps in my knowledge Justin-a big thank you very much for all of your hard work and in-depth advice, for all your videos, and comments (which I have admittedly scrolled through for long hours pondering what course of action to take). Sending much love from down under and wishing all the best for you and your channel man!
PS: Sorry for my long rambling-I’ve just had a lot on my mind and it’s so relieving to finally get to the home stretch. Once again thank you again for all the effort (and for your patience) Justin 🙏

SCAM ALERT: Once you contact this guy, he will claim that you've been selected among his lucky winners and will ask you for address to deliver his gifts. He will then ask you for payment straight forward. Untraceable BTC payments. He will ask for that upfront. He's been keen to get me to pay as soon as possible, just like what every scammer does. I knew it but I gave him the benefit of the doubt and played along with his scam and asked him why hasn't my name been announced as he usually does and he said that he only do that AFTER THE GIFT IS DELIVERED and that I must record a video of myself while receiving the package. This is of course ridiculous and doesn't even make sense. Not only is he a scammer, he's not even good enough at his scam. When I turned back to TH-cam to write this comment, I found out that he has even deleted his reply in which he tells me I've been selected among his winners. You know, a precautionary measure as if it never happened, but I do have a screenshot of that. That's exactly the scam he tried to run on me, and I do have screenshot proofs of our telegram chat.
So everybody stay safe and never trust this guy.

That's a great question edwin fernando reina herrera! Hey gundamfight1 sorry for the late reply. I think in the long run you will be happier with 4k. Unfortunately since this machine got so hot with an i7, I don't recommend the i9 if you go with an Alienware. But after having tested several more top ranking 12th gen machines, I recommend the GE76 above this one. Better cooling, Better fps, secondary key illumination on the keyboard, a motherboard and better speakers. And because it had better cooling, it's actually worth it to get the i9 version.
