We "have next to nothing" is not an exaggeration. It's true. Most of us Filipinos are poverty stricken but we're happy and hospitable. Why? Hmm... I don't know...
American born Filipino here… I visited my younger cousins in the Philippines when I was still in college. We played many kids games like that in the street and can say that was one of my most favorite pure joyful experiences I’ve ever had on vacation anywhere - even some almost 30 years later. Thank you for sharing this video Jonathan! Great stuff as always.
Of course a Filipino comes out and gives you some of his wife's sopas! I am married to a Filipino & am learning about the art of showing love & generosity to all people you encounter. Love love love the Filipino generosity & kindness! Thanks for this lovely vlog showcasing how this naturally occurs. 🥰
Giving gifts for a new friend is one of the Filipino cultures.. It's like souvenir..but honestly, i was touched by this kids that they still have that culture I thought that you can only find it in the province of the Philippines.
that last part where the kids ran after you and said "sa iyo na" (it's yours) - meaning the ball, is so touching, they really appreciate you, sir for getting to know them & spending time with them.
Those kids are genuinely wonderful, they can be happy for just the simplest of things and to realize that, there's no better way than to join in their game. I just can't get enough watching them. 👍

When you are a traveler going to the Philippines you are automatically a part of the family. We Filipinos are unlike most Asians because we are not shy of expressing ourselves and we are also very curious. Enjoying your blog.
That’s good news that you have decided to make Philippines your base. You have a positive vibe that Filipinos naturally gravitate to you and show kindness and hospitality. I hope I bump into you next time I go to mnl .
I was born in the Philippines and has been living in the US for nearly 2 decades. I am glad to see children still playing on the street / outdoors as opposed to just being on their phones or laptops or game consuls. And love you showcasing the hospitality of my fellow kababayans. Those children are so adorable!!!
Nice! Just smile and be humble. People coming to the Philippines, just smile and be humble like this man. This is great. I'm also an American that chose the Philippines. Best people in the world.
What a great vlog! I could not help but laugh and smile the whole time. A wonderful reminder that there is still so much humanity in the world, the Philippines in particular. Such an attitude of happiness and joy in life among its people. This, despite the fact that they're much more materially deprived than in other advanced economies. Proof that there is indeed joy in simplicity, where life and living is founded on God and family-centeredness first before anything else.
The girl in the blue shirt said, "what's your name kuya?" In the Philippines, unlike in many Western countries, children have to refer someone older than them as Ate or Kuya. It's considered disrespectful to just call a person by his/her first name.
One so hilarious part is your selfie with the kids where one of them rubbed your head innocently like it was a crystal ball. Not making fun of your head, but the innocence of that boy made me and my son laughing for quite a while and you’re just so cool about it! You just don’t know how you touched us directly in our hearts by mingling with the locals especially the depressed areas and roaming around the rural environment. Indirectly, you are supporting the Philippine tourism, then our economy and the whole country as a whole. We support people that support our people. Greetings from a Filipino family in Brooklyn, New York! USA!🇺🇸 USA!🇺🇸 USA!🇺🇸…you know exactly what l mean, Jonathan…politically😊 Strange world we live in…tsk tsk…
Hi Jonathan, great video and enjoyed seeing the excitement on the kids faces while playing the game. They have so little, but find a lot of joy in life. The Filipino hospitality and friendliness is next level. That soup that you were eating looked exactly like Chicken soup with noodles in America.
Sopas literally means soup, and what they offered was basicsaly chicken noodle soup. Something to snack on while chilling with friends or something for a cool, rainy day.
your traveling to "my" sense of place for the last 4 decades warmed my heart. Very few YTbers are open and humble enough to really understand the true beauty of the PI which is the people. Bravo young man. Bravo.
Cebuano here watching from Virginia. Really appreciate your willingness to interact with the kids. In the Cebuano-speaking provinces we call the game Bato-lata. You got the main gist of the game but what you also need to know is that the “it” cannot tag you until he sets the “can” back upright. Meanwhile you need to retrieve your slippers/flip flops and try to make it back to the place where you were throwing the slipper from. That area is a “safe” area and you can’t be tagged from there. Enjoy your time with family (assuming you’re still stateside).
One important detail to emphasize. He has to retrieve his slipper before the "it" person can put the can upright and tag him. If he gets tagged, he is the new "it".

This is what’s great about travelling, not just the place but actually knowing the locals. Thank you soooo much for all the kind words about us, Filipinos. What’s just sad about other people when they met even just one person from one country is that they generalize all the people if that one person treated them bad or rudely. I can say if not all but most of us are kind, caring and respectful. Most parents just wants their children to grow up as a good person and of course, having a better life. It’s true, Filipinos are fond of foreigners, I guess, when you don’t typically see someone or something, you get excited. If some Pinoys ignores you, most of the time they are just shy but not to mean bad towards you.

Giving a gift to a new friend is one of our Filipino culture that is slowly fading. This kind of giving a souvenir is an act similar to a blood pack tradition in our ancestors. I used to play tumbang preso when I was a child (I’m now 64). I have forgotten the name until it was mentioned on your video. Thank you. The literal translation of “tumba” in this context means fallen or knocked off. “Preso” means prison or prisoner. Thanks for taking me back in time during my childhood. I’m all smiles watching you and the children play with so much fun.
This vid just popped up and I'm so touched by your positive and impromptu reaction to the people of Pasay, my birthplace. I'm all smiles seeing you play "tumbang preso" with the kids. They are happy playing among themselves and also with you. The Filipino kids don't have many toys but they usually make do with what they have or invent it, just like the yoyo. Yes, everybody can communicate in English, and we are hospitable, a cultural trait that stays with us whether we live in the Philippines or Pensacola. Re the game, "tumbang preso". It's depicting a prison scape. You hit the cup and if you fell it, you tag someone to be the next prisoner who would attempt to scape. This game would be more fun if there's plenty of room for kids to run away from the tagger. Off I go to your other vlogs. Keep vlogging, Jonathan.
Dear Jonathan (I hope I am spelling your name correctly), Today (21 Oct 23) I was watching your videos on Manila. I love your getting involved with the children. They are happy, playful (as children should be), and interested in you as much as you are in them. It is really great to see. Thank You & God's Blessings, Irish
Kudos to their parents who gave them time off from their ipods or gadgets ! Playing those growing up myself thought us friendships and empathy…how to deal with people and knowing when to give! So many values you can learn just by playing with neighbours you learn the value of relationships when you grow up.Even up to this day I still make contact with my childhood friends and laugh at our improvised toys…
Filipinoes are naturally warm and curious... they are love givers especially to those who really deserve it. The kids and the people are very appreciative of you because you are very accommodating to them. Most of them are poverty stricken, and yet you chose to show them kindness. Hence, the ball. It's a little boy's way of saying thank you. 😊 This is one of your best uploads. No fancy music. No tricky edits. Just pure and raw. Just a quick reminder though, eventhough filipinoes are generally kind.. of course you also need to be careful especially in the metro where some opportunist lurk. Other than that, enjoy and safe travels to you! 😊
Tumbang preso ("knock down the prisoner"), also known as tumba lata ("knock down the can") or bato lata ("hit the can [with a stone]"), is a traditional Filipino children's game. The game involves throwing a slipper at a can or bottle, which one player - the tayà - attempts to guard. The game is usually played in backyards, parks, or in streets when there is little traffic in an area.
Thank you for doing the Filipino’s justice. You’ve captured genuine life, kindness, hospitality and happiness of Filipinos no matter what circumstance they may be in. Your vlog of the Philippines have been the most enjoyable to watch of all travel vloggers. Keep traveling. I look forward to the rest of your trip. Cheers, mabuhay.

Surprised to see kids still playing tumbang preso out there in the street of Manila when nowadays kids are glued on their cellphones all day long. Nice kids interacting with a foreigner. And they're well mannered too. I like your content. You're friendly and Filipinos like that. Those kids did a good job making conversation in English and explaining the rules. It's good that they get exposed to talking to foreigners and not get shy about speaking. With all these talk about deteriorating education in the Ph, it's nice to see those kids proving there is hope.
Education in PH deteriorating.. of course that is just black propaganda by the Aquino DILAWAN PARTY, who wants the outside world to believe we are dirt poor with dumb people, who needs aids and help all the time.. which would actually go shamelessly to thier open hands.. Thank you so much!!
What's up Dude ? You have really blown up since that ferry ride... Congratulations !
Thank you for loving PHILIPPINES,take care always.
This is one of your best uploads.
Those kids are so beautiful and full of life. I enjoyed the video very much.
Thank you so much for saying that!!
Very nice video especially with the kids I’m little bit shocked that those kids speaks good English and seems to be well mannered 👍👏👌
I subscribed because you talk with the local kids. None of the other vloggers I watch bother with the kids, they find them "annoying" and "uninteresting." But, I find them entertaining and it is fun to see their excitement. ty for sharing
Loved this episode....so authentic!
thank you!!
OMG...Pasay represent 👌 grew up there but left when I was 13 years old...one of those kids could have been me...my friends and cousins used to play tumbang preso also... missing that place so much... this was a great video Sir.... those kids were adorable and 😊👍😁
Wow! Very interesting video, Jonathan! You hit the right day and spot to highlight the daily lives of regular people in Manila. They love you already. Enjoy😊

Such a nice gesture! I know how much he must love that ball... incredible!
Jonathan what a unique of you playing with kids this is how we grow in Philippine our childhood is very fun and enjoyable
Surprised to see kids still playing tumbang preso out there in the street of Manila when nowadays kids are glued on their cellphones all day long. Nice kids interacting with a foreigner. And they're well mannered too. I like your content. You're friendly and Filipinos like that. I got emotional when one of the kids wanted to give his basketball as a souvenir after learning you will go back to the States. He has showcased the endearing trait of a Filipino.
That’s what we play growing up in our street “tumbang preso”. Brings back memories.😀👏👍🏼🇵🇭🇺🇸
I had a great day watching this and seeing my people entertaining foreign visitor, especially the kids. This has been my fave vid of yours.

Watching from Cavite 🇵🇭❤️
thank you for watching! I love interacting with all of them also!
( Remember the unaccounted billions of Yolanda typhoon funds from abroad!). Thankfully we have another Marcos as president now, so expect we will be flying high again in the near future😊
Same sentiments
