Historians find the first mention of Bucharest in the documents of Prince Vlad III the Impaler from 1459, who built a fortress on the site of the modern city to protect Wallachia from the Turks.
Two hundred years later, Bucharest becomes one of the capital cities of Wallachia; the capital of the principality was finally moved here by Constantin Brancoveanu.
* Palace of Parliament ( Palatul Parlamentului ) is considered the largest civil administrative building in Europe, as well as the heaviest administrative building in the world.
* The Romanian Athenaeum ( Ateneul Român ) is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest (Romania). One of the main landmarks of the Romanian capital. Now the main concert hall of the city, the venue for the annual international music festival. The building was designed by the French architect Albert Galleron. The Romanian Athenaeum today is a symbol of Romanian culture. In 2007 the building was inscribed on the European Heritage List.
* The Cathedral of the Salvation of the Nation ( Catedrala Mântuirii Neamului ) is the patriarchal cathedral of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Bucharest. Upon completion, it will become the tallest and largest Orthodox church in the world.
* The Central Library of the University of Bucharest ( Biblioteca Centrală Universitară ) is a library in the center of Bucharest, located across the street from the National Art Museum of Romania.
