Retirement is wonderful if you have two essentials - much to live on and much to live for. Invest wisely and get good returns.

My husband and I spent a decade btw the 2008 wall st collapse and the covid lockdown traveling the eastern US as pet sitters. We liquidated assets in NJ where we couldn't afford to stay even if we'd wanted to. Our annual income was about $26k. Our car was paid off. We used my sister's TN address so I could register the car and vote. Car insurance dropped 50%. We used 2 clearing house sites to nook pet sit gigs. We bartered for shelter. I calculated if we could sit 3 weeks per month we could make it work. Our food budget was about $300-400/month.cellphones were $26/month.

We are traveling to London Paris and Fjords of Norway in the next couple weeks.
16 days for 3 adults and it will cost us $14,500
I am 59 and my wife is 56 and daughter 22
We decided to do these bucket list trips while I am still employed and healthy.
Last year we did Italy Rome, Florence and Venice, Spain Madrid, Barcelona
We walked 28 k steps a day and we did not see anyone in their 70’s doing what we did and that is why we decided to hit it hard while we still have good health.
We plan our own trip and cover three times what a tour group can do.

My observation is that this very very US-centric, which makes sense as you are american. Most budget travelers in Europe would to consider $40k - $60k as a huge luxury. I am 53 and find spending more than $24k a year very very difficult, this includes food, tours, 3x flights back to the UK for SE Asia, lodging mixing resorts and hiring motorbikes, insurance, visas. It also includes maintaining a property in the UK. So if I was to double this, as your budget suggests, I would really live like a king.

I travelled all the way around the world solo in 2017. It took me two months and cost me $8000. I spent five weeks in Europe then three more weeks heading east to west. I’m now retired and plan to do it again but take longer in more places. The most expensive things for me were the air transportation from one country to the other. I got Airbnb’s with kitchens and bought food from local grocery stores, never ate at a restaurant.

My 3 sisters and I recently went on a “7-nites, 3 continents” cruise around the Agean Sea that will probably fall in your mid-range circle that we enjoyed very much. Our age range is 60-74. The Celestyal Cruise Ship was not huge (1200 capacity, we were told there 700 pax on our cruise), not fancy but adequate and efficient. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Shore stops included Cairo for pyramids, Jerusalem & Bethlehem, Cyprus (Limassol) Turkey (Ephesus) and Rhodes, Greece. We embarked in Athens where we did the budget route. Total time was 2 weeks but spent less than $2000, including cruise, tips, meals and hotels + transportation, museum tkts in Athens. (My sis and I flew from 3 different countries, so that does not count the flight to Athens.) Bottom line, the experience was special!

We stayed in a guest house for a week and it cost less than 100 dollars a night. It had a kitchen area where we cooked. The biggest cost was the 4 wheel drive rental car. In Italy, we hired tour guides for many of the sites since that included a "skip the line" ticket too. It's hard to stand in line for hours _and_ then tour the location for several hours too. The Vatican was particularly worth it. We only stood in line for stuff we could not get a guided tour or tickets. After a week, our legs were very sore - so we were happy to be on the way back home.

Just looked at another Ireland trip in the Spring , we love it and Scotland. Found a highly rated AirBNB for 980 a month. Airline direct round trip flights for 2 at $768 total. The only other big ticket item we are considering is whether to rent a car or not. Car rental is more than the shelter if for a month. So we are thinking car rental to get to the location we are going for a week, then turn it in and use buses the rest of the month. That's $1800 with the rest being groceries, some going out, bus ticket and/or rail passes, fees for some sites, etc. All in all, we plan to spend 3k for the month. You can travel on a budget !

@@bridgetwoodward8031 Use things like Google flight to locate best time to travel. For instance, on the other end of the season, if you leave Aug 5 and come back sept 2 or that week or so, For 2 people it's base 795 round trip with a quick stop in Iceland which we prefer since it breaks up the flight. Depending on bag fees, we travel light and do laundry every week. That brings you in under 900. Or go non stop for a couple hundred more. Piece of cake.

I know budgets are a very personal thing, but I do find what Americans consider "budget" as being huge to everyone else.... I'm from the UK and easily fly around Europe, stay on good hotels, do all the tourist stuff and about £1500 easily covers everything, no skimping or thought about what to do needed. Once we head over to Asia or Africa... £1500 is nice and luxurious.

That's because our cost to fly is sky high compared to Europeans. That's a huge added cost. I know from London, I flew all the way to Krakow for only $60, a 5 hour flight. It'll cost at least a $700 at cheapest to fly from L.A. to London. Also, what kind of places are you staying at? Even 20 years ago, staying in hostels were still $30 per night or more average. That already is $900 for a month. Add transportation and food and admissions it adds up. I think $4,000 to $5,000 is reasonable for a month for 2 people, so $2000 - $2500 per person, and I wouldn't be staying at hostels when I retire 😂.

GREAT idea! We are planning our inaugural retirement journey based on one week stays. Would love to have all stays be 2-4 weeks but it simply isn’t practical for us. We have decided one week stays with short bus or train journeys will let us soak in a fair amount of a region. And if there is a region that just grabs us heart and soul we can always return for a longer trip on a different segment of the journey. We try to imagine 24 checkins, checkouts, train/bus rides over six months and just can’t quite visualize it.
I love that one week stays are how John and Bev are traveling also. Every single thing about them and their lifestyle and choices jives with ours (except we have no pensions🧐). THRILLED to have found them after weeks of searching for exactly this type of traveler and content.

It’s so cool when locals recognize you at the market and want to talk. A month allows me to fully experience the downtime I had promised myself for retirement. My wife and I have a similar lifestyle. We sold our home in Hawaii, gave away nearly everything, and the remainder (family albums, etc.) is in a 5' x 5' locker. Domestic travel throughout the United States is using a Sprinter RV van. Recently, overseas travel increased to 8 to 10 months per annum. After 9 years as retired nomads, a few concessions were added. The first is business class due to a bad back requiring more comfortable seats on long flights. The second is increased use of cruise lines. The post pandemic prices are currently reasonable off season. The third is overseas health care including dental and vision.
While there are vlogs about independent retirement travel, few address the issue of assisted living and nursing homes. Too expensive in the United States. Better care and lower cost for custodial care overseas.

Thank you for taking the time to post this video, I have only just come across your channel and enjoying how informative it is.
A quick question regarding the monthly breakdown of an 50k pa for 2 travelers, I do find the lodging budget of $1041 to be quite astounding, that's $34.70 for 2 people per night. Are these figures just a way of calculating what a couple has available to spend if they have a budget of 50K or actual figures. I would have thought a 50k budget would be good, but looking at your breakdown in that way makes it look quite unachievable. I am looking primarily at Europe and that budget definitely would not work for 12 months.

Thanks. We believe 50K is definitely on the low end. It requires lower cost countries and longer stays. (i.e. monthly rentals much cheaper than nightly) We also spend a couple of months a year staying with family, which can skew the yearly numbers.
      Hope this helps,

We are in a recession. It is very vulnerable to a depression.. Most of us have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, we are finding it impossible to replace it. My condolences to anyone like myself retiring in this crisis, it gets tougher by the day.

As a fellow retiree lI totally feel your pain, l'd
suggest you look into passive index fund
investing and learn some more. You should have
looked into earning passive income years ago; its
still never too late to get started. For me I hired
an expert advisor for assistance, and following
her advice, I poured $50k in passive diversified
safe-haven assets and its yielded $175k so far.
Nothing special, just proper diversification and a
cut loss and take profit strategy.

@Richard Owen My advisor is Nancy Ann, she is a one-off fee license advisor and
came highly recommended. You can search her
name on the net to verify, She's well pronounced.

@@adamdiroff4869 The crazy part is that those advisors
are probably outperforming the market and
raising good returns but some are charging fees
over fees drain your portfolio. Is this the case
      with yours too?

      @@jasonbutler1149 Nah | Cant relate,
Nancy Ann's charge is minimal and very reasonable
when compared to what I benefit in returns.

32$ lodging/ night is indeed challenging, tonight you are at a 70$ hotel, so tomorrow, you guys will need to sleep in the street 😊
Ideas : always keep a roof that belongs to you somewhere in the world (rent it short term while not there) & alternate 3 months travel & month=> 1 month home

Thanks for the tips! The short term rental didn't work for us due to HOA restrictions in the neighborhood we were living, but we could see how it could make sense.

This budget seems very reasonable. Then general rule I always read for retirement: You can usually go by about 60% of the costs of living you had while working. I am sure you made 200k or more per year before retiring and clever folks as you seem to be you certainly put the necessary amounts aside while working full time. And I am sure you could sell the house better than you bought it, thus you have some additional margin. So my guess is you would end up near double the costs of the budget traveler, because you can afford it - and seem to enjoy every minute (or at least many minutes) of it. Last point: With the effort you put into YT you still do have kind of a job, which brings some revenue too. Not as much as everyone thinks, but with the number of views you have still something. Keep it up and I hope you can keep moving as long as you can and want to!
