  • In the 2020s, fans have been fortunate enough to receive LEGO pirate sets, in the form of not only a couple of remakes - those being Pirates of Barracuda Bay and the Eldorado Fortress, but also a Pirate Ship put out under the Creator theme, and a few GWPs. But that leaves the question - what's next for the LEGO Pirates property? This is The Fascinating Future of LEGO Pirates.

    This video unfortunately marks the end of my LEGO Pirates retrospect for the time being, and I'd like to thank you all for your support.
    This series has transformed my channel for the better, and has challenged me to make the best videos I possibly can. Fear not, Pirates content isn't going anywhere - tier lists, reviews, livestreams of building legendary sets, and other commentary videos will be hitting your subscription boxes soon.
    Again, thank you so much.

      Really nice look at the pirates theme and the retrospective.
      I imagine that Pirates themed sets are with us from Lego as appeasement vs. Lego going to launch 🚀 a super theme.
      Lego does a lot of market research and my guess is there isn’t an overwhelming demand or ask for the theme. Hence, the Creator set being out, like you surmise while Lego just released a nice Pirate set here and there.
      The only true way we would know is through knowing their sales on those sets........and I don’t believe the sales for that them is going to warrant LEGO to create bountiful amounts.

    You can forget islanders, Lego wont revisit stereotypical depictions of indigenous cultures for various good reasons. But lego would do a heap of market research into who is buying what, and It would seem that younger audiences arn't generally interested in ongoing unlicensed themes, unless there is some sort of app or media hook attached. So it seems likely that the classic themes will only appear as large adult sets or the odd gwp. As for the space mega theme that is a bunch of interpretations of "space" but there has really only been one classic space set, one classic gwp and two other fun gwp that would sort of fit the classic space theme. Maybe at best you might get some sort of sailing, or high seas mega theme that would have a few nods to classic pirates but I don't think we will see a classic themed set of any description for a $10 price point on store shelves any time soon.

    Lego did also release that Pirate themed rollercoaster.
    I'd love to see another full on non franchised Pirates line, but I'd welcome set concepts that haven't been explored before. What about a pirates base on an island that is mostly hidden inside a massive cave? A ship that uses oars well as sails?
    I could see a series of nanoscale ships being released almost like the architecture line - famous ships could include the Golden Hind, the Mayflower, or more generically a viking longship, a trireme, etc.

    Glad you showed crocodile cage because that is a set I grew up with. Gonna be weird to say but while I think LEGO should give us more smaller cheaper castle sets I think they should keep doing what they’re doing for pirates. Castle has so many options for small sets because pirates is more conducive to select locations. The bricklink designer program island type set leans perfect for what LEGO should do with pirates. The bricklink designer mountain fortress however is just more of the same castle aesthetic we expect rather than branching out into the rest of the medieval realm

As a result, I don't think Lego has as much faith in Pirates as they do with Castle, or even Space. The Imperials specifically under perform, hence why we get Pirate Ships, Lego can count on those to sell. Imperial or other faction sets... They struggle unfortunately.

    So, the future of pirates... I don't see it having one, or at least not in the form we know and love. LEGO doesn't seem to be willing to do original themes anymore, at least not unless they can make it a huge multimedia "big bang" theme like they did with Ninjago, Chima, Nexo Knights, Monkey Kid or DreamZzz, or if they want to once again try to experiment with augmented reality like with Hidden Side or Vidyo. What I think is most likely going to happen is a slow trickle of occasional nostalgia sets like we're currently getting. However, it's _also_ possible that down the road we might see LEGO try another "Big Bang" theme, based on pirates this time. Or Disney might decide to make another Pirates of the Caribbean movie and we might get another wave of that. But LEGO Pirates as we know them are most likely a thing of the past.
    A note on islanders, while I will say that I feel they were handled relatively tastefully during their run, the current political climate would never even give them a chance.

    I'm not so confident Lego will continue to pump out new pirates sets sadly I think the best chance we have as pirates fans in the near future is the bricklink designer programme series 5. So many great pirates designs hopefully one or two make it 🤞

      I'm afraid you could be right. I'm really curious to see if LEGO continues with releasing a retro remake or two a year, or if they suddenly decide to stop. I for one wouldn't be surprised if the Creator Pirate Ship may be the only pirate set we see for another 5, maybe even 10 years.

    It’s not Pirates but if rumors are to be believed we’re getting the Endurance Polarship for Black Friday with a gwp to go along with the set. Maybe there’s still hope for something Pirates related if Lego is willing to take a chance on a pretty niche set.

    For me, Lego simply equalled the pirates and castle themes plus maybe space.
    As for how they could continue to successfully keep the theme alive.. there are a million ways they could do it. I would like to see them partially reintroduce old theme factions, remaking a few old sets and filling in the gaps with one or two new sets. Do that once a year or so and the landscape will look a lot more interesting.

    A full theme sounds nice but like in reality who'd buy it. Older afols ofen have larger amounts of disposable income, smaller sets don't appeal as much or make as much profit. Kids? Kids want a pirate ship a government ship and smash them together.
    Those kids invested enough to get a fort are probably already lego fans that would spend that money on something else lego anyways.
    Corvettes (aka midsized to small sized ships) are still something that would sell competiting at a lower price point but any other set.

      "Corvettes (aka midsized to small sized ships) are still something that would sell competiting at a lower price point but any other set."
      So much this. It's no coincidence that 2009 and 2015, the two worst-performing waves of pirates ignoring the 4+ line, were lacking in midsized sets and didn't have a single small ship to their name. Pirate themes needs their sloops, ketches and yawls to survive, brigs, barques and full-rigs are too expensive to carry a line and small impulse-buy playsets don't have much of an effect. And the mid-sized island and base sets don't have quite the same draw as ships.
      Heck, if LEGO is really hesitant on releasing a mid-sized ship based on the hull pieces they could always use the cargo ship from the El Dorado Fortress rerelease as the basis for other smaller vessels. It's actually perfectly sized for a short-ranged sloop or ketch used by pirates based out of an island hideout.

      @@OurToyWorld The 2009 theme had the Imperial Flagship, so that CLEARLY pushes it over 2015. If you take away that set... It's closer than you would think. As a Pirates fan, I'd take 2020 to present releases (even without a proper wave), over 2015 and 2009. With 80's and 90's being #1 overall of course.

    Can't comment on Pirates of Barracuda Bay, though I might try to pick one up on eBay soon.
    I recently picked up the Creator pirate ship, and honestly I have very mixed feelings on it. The level of detail is comparable to the 2010 Imperial Flagship, but in a smaller and more accessible package - which is definitely a plus. I also like that it's the first LEGO tallship to actually feature a proper forecastle, whereas previous ships just had the main deck stretch from the cabin all the way to the bow, assuming they even have a full main deck. The downsides, however... it's small. This is a Caribbean Clipper sized ship, which I do like the idea of having more of those but this segways into the next problem - as a creator build it has to rely on generic parts rather than being able to use the more specialized hull segments, and this results in an inflated parts count for its size, a lot of its interior space used for structural framing and SNOT bricks and as a result a lack of interior detail apart from the cabin. It just does not feel like a good value if you're buying it for the Pirate Ship build. This is honestly one of those 3-in-1 sets where the alternate builds are what actually provide a serious portion of the set's value. I also absolutely hate the brick-built sails. I've seen decent brick-built sails before on various mocs, and this set's absolutely pale in comparison. Again, it's a creator set so they had to use generic parts, but this set MASSIVELY benefits from being retrofitted with cloth sails.
    El Dorado Fortress... I have this set and it is honestly one of the best sets _in general_ that LEGO has released in the past several years. That being said, it does have me wanting a proper pirate ship to go with it, as without that, what's the fortress going to defend against? That being said, I wouldn't count it out yet. Regardless of whether it's sold well or not, LEGO seems to be intent on keeping it on shelves for its full run, unlike what they did for Pirates of Barracuda Bay.

      @OurToyWorld  26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the two pirates sets still on shelves. You provide a lot of detail on the creator set which i wasn’t aware of- I also have seen people buy two and expand it and I think it looks a lot better that way.

    The Spanish, or "Armada" as most will call them, is a faction that really needs love and was officially killed off by LEGO California. This is also why no one really got to see more of them as LEGO California wanted to promote America more and thus the infestation of American type sports was a thing suddenly along with other pointless themes that shouldn't have been released. It would make a lot of sense for now woke company LEGO to make what fans want, which is a decent full set line of Armada. This indeed including a big base and a new ship, or rather 2 sizes of ships.
    The islanders is a faction that likely won't return due to modern day woke bs making it a touchy subject that probably will get cancelled real quickly. Now I personally am educated and I do know the realistic idea behind it. So I personally would like to see a new set regarding that. Problem is that it will be kinda difficult to really do much with it as it stands now.
    I however do wish to see a more Dutch East India type faction that could turn out to be a huge game changer for the theme as a whole. Think about merchant ships, merchant type city bases and things along those lines. It would be a faction that should have been added a long time ago and technically speaking, there is a single ship (although fairly small) that is part of a merchant fleet. Which is repeated to some extend in set 10320. So technically 2 ships? Problem is the second round it's a blue coat ship which makes no sense with the sail and flag it shows.
    I personally believe the next big thing we might see are the 2 big pirate islands from 1989 combined into 1 island. They did it with 2 soldier bases, which technically makes no sense as it's 2 different factions (Blue being French and Red being British), but oh well. It does state there is a big opportunity that they will make both islands into 1. Another option would be one of those islands combined with one of the Islander sets, which would give a unique idea to it.

    • @OurToyWorld
      @OurToyWorld  26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I’d love to see some more merchant type sets. I wish we got more imperial trading post type sets. I love the forts and bases, but normal location sets are desired as well, at least from people like me.

    • @SIG442
      @SIG442 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@OurToyWorld Imperial trading post should have been a separate set, not mixed in with another set. Such a iconic set and with so much more potential. But yes, I would strongly agree with similar sets appearing. The main focus of the Pirates theme is more on ships and not a single one can actually dock. So a decent harbor set, or for all I care in several sets that would form 1 big harbor, would there for be a huge plus.
      I however do think the well known baseplates need to get put back in these sets as it really makes it a lot better over all.
      I know many will disagree, but hear me out on this one. The sets are meant for children mainly, that means they need to be able to play. If you have to worry about thinking up your table being blue or specific parts being green, this would take away from the playability of the set. But also for veterans in te scene will seriously have benefits from baseplates. Not just for the actual set as intended, but also for MOC's and many other reasons.
