  • After a two year wait Simon runs The Wall, a 70 mile ultra marathon staged by Rat Race (see ratracethewall... for info). The race loosely follows the route of Hadrian's Wall, starting at Carlisle castle, through north Cumbria into south Northumberland, along the banks of the Tyne valley and Newcastle Quayside, finally crossing Gateshead Millenium Bridge to the finishing line. This is the story of that gruelling but rewarding adventure.

      It certainly was! :) It's something that I could have edited out, but I think tripping over the words helped get the full extent of my weariness over. Thanks for watching :)

    Excellent Simon, well done. I'm 'running' the wall this Saturday, and this video has been a great resource in helping to mentally prepare me for the task at hand - thank you!

      Thanks for watching and I'm glad you've found it useful :) Good luck on Saturday. I found from Hexham to Newburn to be the hardest part, it seems particularly long, so be prepared . I'll be out on the route somewhere between Hagg Bank Bridge and Newburn, so if you see me give me a shout :)

    Well done, Simon. That's a long while to be feeling exhausted and to continue on regardless. Great effort 👍🏻🏃‍♂️

      Thanks Mark, the section between Hexham and Newburn was probably the hardest bit, I was running on willpower alone - but the elation at crossing the finish line is beyond explanation :)

      Thanks, it was definitely mind over body. The last 7 miles in the dark were hard, it's a route I've run many times so wasn't too bad. It's that part the most people drop out of that ultra. I just wanted it to be over!

      @@NERunner it must have been about 2012 or 2013, it seems ages ago now, it was good to see your footage. My memory was there was too much road and not enough trail but the medal was a nice chunky bit of bling 👌

    • @NERunner
      @NERunner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there's not a huge amount of the wall left for there to be a trail. Much of it was demolished in the mid 18th century to build the Military Road. The main section of trail in this run was between Walltown Quarry and The Sill, which is only 7 miles. There was a lot off road on this course, but it was still on tarmac paths etc. I have run most of the route on the actual Hadrian's Way footpath, which is a lot of trail and it's rough going.

    • @johndixon6353

      Hi Simon thanks for getting straight back to me. My main query is regarding the amount of kit people carry. In your video it mentions some people carry a lot but there's also runners with virtually nothing. I was under the impression that the mandatory kit was quite strictly enforced? I'd be interested to know if that is the case and what you had with you? I'm currently training with a weighted pack in preparation for carrying the full kit list.
      Many thanks and much appreciated
      Regards John

    • @NERunner
      @NERunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johndixon6353 I also stuck to the mandatory kit list - but probably didn't need to add the few extras I took along. It looked to me that there were some people carrying extra, extra stuff too, and this filled up their bags and added to the weight. While it's sensible to be prepared, it's also not sensible to carry extra weight you don't need for 70 miles. There were definitely people who had skimped on the mandatory kit in 2021. Maybe they took the risk of not being checked - it was random checks because of Covid distancing for this event. My suggestion is to stick to the full list, but pare it down to the least you can - there's loads of support along the way should you need help. Plus a lot of other runners throughout the journey. Wherever you think to yourself, "I'll just put an extra one of those in" stop and realise it all adds up and it's a long way to carry it all.
