What do you do on your birthday? Simon runs in the Nulkaba parkrun near Cessnock in New South Wales, Australia. Right in the heart of the Hunter Valley wine region, this is a lovely place surrounded by vineyards and wineries. It doesn't get much better having parkrun and world beating wine all in the same place. #parkrun #5k #australia

Why This Australian Parkrun is SO Special
มุมมอง 377ปีที่แล้ว
Lots of parkrunners enjoy trying out events in different places, it's even got a name - "parkrun tourism". Simon and Louise enjoy it too, and Shellharbour was a special one after having spent the previous night in a very dodgy hotel in Kiama. #parkrun #5k #shellharbour

Cracking video, glad this came up on my list. Iv just venturing into longer distances myself. I hope this gets the traction you deserve.
Thanks Dean, I'm pleased you liked it 😊
Really enjoyed that. Not a track I would have guessed tho! 🤘🏼
Yes, surprised me too!
Great effort guys. We are so lucky to live along the Tyne, with so many great routes 😎
It really is! Do you fancy doing it with us next time, Mick?
@ yes mate if I can make it I shall, thanks 😊
Great job, both of you! It looks like a really nice route and cracking marathon training run 👍
Thanks Paul 😁
great video Simon
Glad you enjoyed it, Andy 😄
Nice video! Would you recommend filming with a chest or head mount for hands free recording?
Thanks for watching 🙂 I wouldn't recommend it really because you end up with only one camera view point. In addition, I like to get as steady a shot as possible so use my arm to absorb camera shake.
Thanks for putting the video together decent time for such a hilly course, compared to New York and London there wasn’t much crowd although looked like a decent crowd at the finish. Nice to see some local for me running club runners in your video, its on my to run list for 2025 and or 2026.
I'm pleased you enjoyed it, Bevan. I'm certain that the amount of support will increase over the years as the event becomes more established on the WMM circuit and Sydneysiders becopme more aware of this globally recognised event. I'm sure you'll enjoy it when you do enter :)
Great time. Well done. I believe that Sydney overtakes NYC marathon for elevation gain in a major. Now that it will be an Abbott major in 2025 I hope the crowds will be better. It looked quite quiet for a lot of the race. Next year the race will be moved to August so maybe they will start it later in the day and hopefully that will encourage spectators. I ran NYC marathon earlier this month and the crowds were unbelievable. I get goosebumps remembering the wall of noise there. Sydney will really have to go up a gear to make it worthy of being a major. Nice video, thanks for sharing your experience.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Mark. It's a super course and certainly challenging. I gave the organisers feedback to suggest having more entertainment along Anzac Parade and Centennial Park to encourage more spectators to attend. It was a very early start, so a bit later in the morning would probably help. It's a little disappointing that we didn't get a WMM star retrospectively too, but that's what they always said.
Well in Simon 🔥🔥. Get ready for Boston
Thanks Dominic, I'll be working on it 😁
Go on Elswick! Great video, Simon. Told you I’d watch on my break tonight 😁😎
Marvellous, thank you 😁I'm glad you like it, and isn't it great seeing the famous Elswick vest in locations around the world? There was one spectator who recognised and shouted to me - unfortunately I my camera wasn't rolling at the time.
@ it is indeed great seeing the vest in different countries! Well done on the race mate. Must add quite a bit more difficulty recording it also 😎
@@Mick19822 It does, I suppose, but I don't really think about it at the time. If it was a really serious race where I was keen to get the best possible time I wouldn't carry the camera. But although I want to do well in the marathons I'm also keen to record them for my own memories of the events 🙂
Brilliant video Simon, suddenly my marathon itch has re-appeared! Loved the oggy part😂
Thanks Kisi, I'm pleased you like it. It's strange the way one forgets the pain and is ready to enter another marathon. I have Boston in April, and then after that I don't mind not doing another. But who knows...
Great vlog, Simon. I’m back for a 6th go tomorrow 😊
Nice one! I've decided that the marathon is my maximum distance, so I applaud you 👏🏻
Great vid of my local parkrun :)
I loved it, Louise and I really need to do it again some time. Thanks for watching :)
I ran in that, it definitely was a tough one, well done on the filming Just subscribed
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it :)
What is going on? Snow? I feel like im in a timewarp!
I think it's me in a timewarp, Paul. I've been so busy with other things I have left 4 sets of filming unedited. My last one was Edinburgh Marathon - I'll get it done soon 🙂
@NERunner Just dropping by to see if you've posted anything. I hope all is well Simon!
@@DevRunner Hi Paul, It is, although I've got so much work on at the moment, plus doing my level 4 coach training, that I haven't had a chance to edit any of my footage recently. I've got four outstanding videos in the can!!! Hopefully it won't be a long wait until the next one ⏲ 😀
Hi Simon, great video. I'm running this next Saturday and the weather on the day (and leading up to it) is looking like a washout. I'm trying to work out whether to go road or trail (Inov8 Trailfly G270) so was wondering what the ratio of road to trail surfaces was like and if there were any areas that had the potential to get really muddy/boggy in those conditions? Thanks.
Thanks Karl, I hope it's given you a good feel for the event. Most of it is off road but on tarmac paths. The trail parts are between Crawcrook and Greenside, then again around Chopwell Woods, and finally a bit when you get to Derwent walk area. In my view only Chopwell might be claggy if it's very wet I ran it in road shoes and that's what I'd choose this weekend too.
@@NERunner Thanks Simon, certainly did and I'm really looking forward to it now. One last thing and then I'll leave you alone! How did you find the navigation? You didn't seem to have any issues in the video but I've read a few reviews saying markers and directions could have been better in certain areas. I'll have the GPX on my phone but ideally won't have to keep getting it out!
@@karlmaguire234 No problem, Karl :) It was all well marked and marshalled but I think some joker had been messing on with the directions markers, hopefully it was a one off. The only place that caused any problems was coming up from Wylam (heading south) where you bear left off Sled lane (w3w.co/dock.slept.shortens), then there's another bear left at the top of the hill (w3w.co/plotter.windpipe.pranced), followed by a switch back onto the side of the B6137 (w3w.co/flattered.asleep.finders - which heads west out of Crawcrook. You need to cross the road, and bypass (A695) to head up "anklebreak alley" which properly called Coalway Lane. Apart from that small section it's very obvious. 🙂 I hope that helps.
@@NERunner Brilliant, thank you so much Simon. Much appreciated!
@@karlmaguire234 No problem - good luck and enjoy it 😄
Lovely run out for you both in the the snow. Best wishes.
Thanks, it was gorgeous that day :) It seems so long ago now and I have a load of videos to edit to catch up on...
is it 1 big lap or multiple laps?
It's a figure of 8 course, which makes it a bit unusual, and keeps it interesting too :)
@@NERunner I i did it the day , pretty tough course , great run though
@@andys121. Yes, chellenging but a good one - and you did it in a great time, I've just checked the results - well done :)
Doing it in a couple of weeks - good to see some of the course. Feeling more hopefully after a 58k run a few days ago and it looks like doing UTS has been a good decision 😂
Good luck, your 58k will help prepare you significantly for the Wall. Thanks for watching 🙂
Ah yes, the Simon experience of walking (or running in this case) around Northumberland and being told the history of every tree. You know a lot! Also looks like a cold day to be running
It was cold, but perfect conditions for a run. I know you love it, Fred 😂
Great to see you both out on local route! Hope all goes well with your marathon!
Thanks Michael - after you showing me the first part it was great to see more of it with Lou 😄
Good bridge !
Thanks for watching 🙂
Im doing this for the first time this year. Excited but very nervous. I've trained and I can now make the cut-off times! Not going to be setting any records, but excited to complete my first ultra :)
Fantastic, good for you. If you've done the training you'll be absolutely fine :) The main thing I learnt from it was to hydrate with electrolytes - it made a massive difference in subsequent ultra running. Good luck, and thanks for watching.
coming from a fellow filmmaker and marshall at this parkrun, this is very well put together and a very entertaining watch, well done!
Thanks for that, Callum, I really appreciate your nice comments ☺️
Beautiful countryside Simon, but those bottlenecks would have driven me crazy! Well run race my friend!
Thanks Paul, it was a little annoying, fortunately there was only the one. Other than that it was a really good experience ☺️
Looking strong! 💪
Thanks Alperen, it was probably my best cross country of the season. After over a year of injury I've been careful not to overtrain - things seem to be going well 🙂
Fantastic scenes with all the runners and the club colours. Best wishes.
It's a wonderful event to be part of, I certainly recommend doing the National at least once ☺️
Well done, Simon! Although was it against the rules to carry a camera?
No rules banning carrying a camera at all. Freddie. But some people just want to stop you doing things sometimes and assume rules that don't exist.
I was knackered just watching you - as I sat here with my Wispa Gold and coffee ☕. Congratulations really fine effort 👍 I ran the Yeovil Easter Bunny 10k last Monday so the puffing and gasping was familiar!
Yes indeed, it's funny how reviewing it brought it all back - I remember it being hard, but the feeling has gone so I'll be happy to run the next XC season. Thanks for watching 🙂
Awesome run in some brutally muddy conditions! It blows my mind how many people of all ages groups were participating! Cross-country is so demanding - well done Simon!
It's great being able to run and compete in small events against some of the UK's top athletes, Paul. And the running club scene here is so vibrant attracting people of all ages and backgrounds. We'll be starting the track season soon too. I'm glad you liked it 🙂
Yes Simon! That looked really tough mate! The mud and hills were terrible! Huge kudos to you mate for giving it 110% bud! 👏😎🤘
Thanks Ben. XC isn't an easy running event but they are fantastic to do - I really enjoy them ☺️
mud and hill
Thanks for watching, Ajay. You've summed up cross country races very succinctly 🙂
Now that is a lot of mud. Must be that northeast weather
We were benefitting from Lancashire weather in that one, Freddie. But many XC runners welcome the muddy conditions 😂
I'm really looking forward to my first Parkrun.... Very happy to have on near me now in North Carolina! Well done Simon and Happy Birthday!
That's great news, Paul. I'm sure you'll enjoy it and become a regular. I'll look out for it on your Strava feed ☺️
well done simon lad & belated happy birthday
Thanks Andrew, I was very pleased with myself on that one ;)
Best wishes from Lancashire, England.
Thank you, Nigel :). I can't belive it's now mid-March and I've only just got that video out. I still have a load more footage in the can from other events in the UK; so watch out for more ;)
Another parkrun in Australia? It's almost as if its a massive country. looks like a really beautiful place!
There are over 450 parkruns in Australia, I think only second to the 1200 in the UK, Fred. It's a wonderful organisation :)
Dreaming of 21 degress here 😂
Thanks for watching, Stu. Now we're back in the UK Louise and I are too. At least it's not dark at 4pm now 😊
Great video. I live not too far away from the Northumberland Branxton 😁
Glad you liked it Neil 😊 That was the second time we'd visited Branxton, NSW. It was a surprise when my uncle and aunt moved there last year.
Huh, Branxton looks a lot different from what I remember... Didn't know they had wild kangaroos!
You should visit yourself sometime, Fred. John and Jill would love to see you 🙂
Great video and so good to see what the Australian Branxton is like. Very different to the Northumberland one.
Thanks Nick. It's much bigger, for a start. I don't remember many 'roos in Branxton, Northumberland either. The weather was similar though 😂
Thank you Simon for coming to our parkrun. Look forward to seeing you out there again.
Thank you, Scott :) You have a lovely, friendly atmosphere and it was such a pleasure (once all the hills were done) to have spent our time with you all. We enjoyed our breakfast at the café there too :D
@@NERunner I was not there on that day but glad you lived after running our 2 hills😉
They were fine, all in a day's work and added to the course "personality" - it's one of the things that makes running special 🙂
great video , guess you wont be doing the XC on Saturday :)
Thanks Andrew, I certainly will be running it :) Not sure I'll bring my GoPro on this occasion though. Are you going to be there?
@@NERunner yes I will be their , see you their ( Gateshead harrier}
21 degrees is not that warm? An interesting statement. Also, what a lovely parrot at the end
It's not that warm in an Australian summer, Fred. It's really just room temperature so it doesn't feel hot or cold when you're outside :)
wow what an incredible route!!! Thanks for taking us with you Simon 👍🏃♀👟
I'm glad you enjoyed it Phil, it was a lovely location and quite challenging too :). The rain was a bit of a surprise, but they've been getting a lot of that in eastern Australia recently. We drove along past the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers for a while where there was still a lot of flooding.
@@NERunner yeah it looked just my type of course...I MUST make the effort of getting to a few of my local park runs! 🏃♂️ 🏃♂️ 🏃♂️
It's easy to get out of the habit of going to them. It took me a year after it returned after lockdown to get back to one!!!
Well done Simon and Louise! Fabulous views as well. Watch out for snakes….. 🐍. Not a warning I’ve heard on a Park Run before! 😂
:) Yes, it was a first for me on a parkrun, although I do have a story about running and bening very aware of brown snakes in the vicinity. And on one of the runs on this trip we did have to avoid a red-bellied black snake in the road: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-bellied_black_snake
I had seen a snake on the course once ( the old course) when I did a freedom run once.
Snakes are not something we get warned about in UK parkruns, although there are a few in some of the more rural locations - but they are very shy. The biggest risk is dog poo in the park!!!
@@NERunner you will never have a issue with dog dropping at our parkrun as dogs are not allowed
I bet that was one epic trip Simon! I am extremely jealous! Some stunning scenery out there! Can't wait until I can don a vest for running again. Good to catch up with you mate! 😎🤘
It was a fab trip, Ben. I can heartily recommend planning a crazy journey like that. We covered 3,150 miles in total, through ever changing landscapes - memorable hardly describes it. Planning the next one now 🤠 But first I've got a few more Aussie runs to edit together. Thanks for watching 🙂
Much like the wicked, it seems there's no rest for the runners. Looks lovely, even if it is overcast!
It was a nice run, Fred, and felt good to be exercising after that long journey :)
Great effort. Well done.
Thanks, not one of my best runs - but they can't all be, can they :D
Looks cold! Would you rather be running here or in Australia?
Both locations have their merits :)
