It's the thing I'm trying to work on the most because I've said some mean things to people I care about over the years and even as I'm saying them I regret them :( I usually apologize immediately but obviously I've still hurt people's feelings. And sometimes I make a fool out of myself by crying out of frustration at the worst times. (I'm not using ADHD as an excuse btw; I take full responsibility for my actions.)
At least it's getting a bit better as I age, and my family says I'm much better when I'm on ADHD meds. I don't feel different inside but I think I can control how I express my emotions better when medicated, if that makes sense.

I was just going to say that this is why we don't call it "mood" swings and instead call it "emotional dysregulation," because moods are pervasive and global, but ADHD hits us in the feels! Regardless of the name, I too, am not a fan.

The worst part of ADHD mood swings is that it doesn’t even have to be all that bad to make you cry. Someone could just tell you that you shouldn’t do something and you just start crying!

I started doing this multiple POV thing it’s were I have my pov, the pov of gathered unemotional information, my secondary pov and If possible the other person’s pov that helps me stay on common ground with this person more rather than just giving in to emotional response. @@MarianaFerreira27gatoslindosHello! I’m assuming they mean bipolar disorder since that’s a mood disorder. (As opposed to borderline personality disorder, which is also referred to as BPD.)
The answer is it can be hard to know. Bipolar type 1 has manic stages too, which makes it a little easier to diagnose. But bipolar type 2 can really look like depression most of the time. It technically still needs hypomanic periods to be diagnosed, but mine were mostly very minimal, and it went ignored for almost a decade. 😞
If your depression is not getting managed adequately by depression medication, you can float the idea of being bipolar by your doctor. Mine isn’t quite convinced, but the thing is, medications for bipolar also often work for depression. So they might be willing to medicate you like you have bipolar, even though they’re not sure that’s your diagnosis. For me, this was a huge game changer - I’m so much more stable. I’m not crying all the time. And I’ve been able to go back to school.
I really hope it works out well for you too. ❤

My dads the same way. I can’t focus whatsoever in school, which can lead to my grades dropping every so often. My dad is one of those strict parents that if my grade is anything below a B, I get grounded, no matter the reason. I’ve tried explaining hundreds of times, but he just says, “That’s not an excuse, just do the work.” Which I have trouble doing said work. On top of that, I have severe depression and anxiety. The depression has be manageable, but the anxiety is a different story. These are also two things my dad doesn’t understand. I have a lot of trouble ordering at restaurants. It gets so bad that I can have trouble talking of a few minutes afterwards. When it comes to depression, just getting out of bed it hard, much less getting out and doing something. I don’t know if I started rambling at some point. If I did, sorry. I’m gonna be surprised if someone actually reads all of this.

Dr. Russell Barkley made this point so clear to me when he said emotional disregulation is not a mood disorder because with e.d. it's the correct emotional response to the situation, but at a disproportionate volume. So something happens and, sure anyone would be annoyed, but you're so past annoyed, you're livid. And a few minutes later you chill tf out. I lost a lot of friends before I learned to bite my tongue

    • @katarh

That's a great analogy. I've learned over the years to disengage from social media and the news a few hours before bed, because the last thing I need is something making me upset and skyrocketing my blood pressure when I'm supposed to go to sleep.
And it can go the other way too. Sometimes a thing that is funny but not really THAT funny will send me into a giggle fit that lasts for much, much longer than it ought to. When I was in 7th grade once I nearly passed out laughing in the library.

that's a great point. it's more like bipolar can have episodes NOT AT ALL based on life events and seemingly out of the blue versus other people NOT.
adhd will always be reactive to things happening around them. same with other people. they just don't have that "waking up broken" kinda feel, or the impending doom when something is about to shift.

Rage Is a hard one for me too like getting angry for me is like breathing no effort I just do it but idk if you go but I go to church and one day I was listening and the dude said “you must desire love in the same way you desire this evil you want to do”. It took years of trying crap that didn’t work but starting with me not my adhd not my emotions but me truly going out there to make an effort to say yes to love and no to anger even if it hurt say yes to love. The damage I cause with rage is to high a cost but with God walls fall down, doors open, and the impossible becomes possible even taming this wild beast. Just food for thought.

Mood disorders can be triggered into an episode by life events though, they don't just come out of the blue either they typically run in a cycle and that cycle can be triggered to one extreme or the other by life events, for example in my case I have rapid cycling bipolar disorder, So I experience mania and extreme depression and on occasion I have mixed episodes, so I have even cycled within the same day when triggered, but I have also been triggered into months or weeks like you said, and life events have definitely quickly triggered me into either extreme , mood disorders definitely are more complicated than this.. is also a spectrum similar to autism and ADHD!

it’s also very similar to bpd which i was recently diagnosed with although bpd is more commonly confused with bipolar. bpd triggers include being triggered by someone close to you or feelings of abandonment. also bpd episodes usually last for a few hours to a few days at most and are usually displayed as a type of panic. also the biggest thing separating mood swings from bpd episodes are that they aren’t actually your mood but feeling emotions too intensely where your body physically and psychologically doesn’t know what to do with it and usually have two sides: a panic/outburst caused from feeling too negatively or euphoric caused by feeling to positively

I'd love to see a further analysis short clip on ADHD mood swings and Borderline "splitting" *mood swings where your thoughts go into black and white thinking: all or nothing. As borderline as a mood disorder is more quick than some other prolongued mood disorders

    • @lurklingX
      @lurklingX 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

your comment is cut off (stupid YT bug recently). but that's the thing - splitting is VERY specific to BPD. i call it pedestal versus gutter. it will center around a person or people and the reactive mood is like a defense mechanism. instead of feeling devalued or some other negative emotion (could even be disappointment), it's like yeeting someone out a window as trash or useless or not worth the time.
ADHD can have a similar thing, the rejection sensitivity, but the negative emotions are more likely to be felt instead of blasted away by splitting. some people with BPD don't even totally notice the flip, it can happen so fast. they can also feel like they just changed their mind about someone or lost interest.
BUT, like with ADHD (and bipolar, to be honest) BPD can have mood swings just based on events or things happening. all 3 can. the only difference is that bipolar has the additional layer of overall mood states. and this other thing is a layer on top of it.
BPD generally has the instability with relationships to a greater extent than the other two, though bipolar can show some of this. depends on the person. BPD will usually have a 'favorite person', who gets the bulk of attention and focus. and there is often a 'wanting to be everyone's number 1, even if those people aren't theirs.'
i have an intimate knowledge of all 3 of these things: BPD, Bipolar, ADHD. i won't go into details but people close to me as well as myself have an array.

So I switched my second medication (Lexapro) to Wellbutrin since I don't have a proper diagnosis for ADHD. It used to treat ADHD and has helped with some of the hyperactivity. However, it is not comparable to Adderall at all. It was a night and day sifference.

    • @atree4487

@@mkat8505 I can't speak to effects, but wellbutrin is an NDRI (norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor). Adderall is similar but it composed of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, which act like dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. I've heard Wellbutrin be called Adderall Lite - that meaning it _can_ perform similarly to Adderall but it may not be as potent

Having both, this was very helpful in making it easier to identify the difference in what emotions are my ADHD and what are my other diagnoses. It sucks having ADHD combined with a multitude of other things, but it’s nice to know there’s reasons for all their effects and I’m not just bonkers when sometimes I will have months of depressive episodes without a trigger and then other times change moods like traffic lights over small events.

Ha this is similar to me, my parents really wanted to ignore it when I was first diagnosed... my initial diagnosis was PDD-NOS which is sometimes considered "mild autism" so I think that made it easier to ignore things. Now I have full ADHD and Autism diagnoses. x.x It's really unhelpful when parents do this, I understand why it might feel terrifying and overwhelming for a parent to hear that their child is going to have way more struggles than average, but also your kid is depending on you! Figure it out!
Also, more often than not at least one parent has strong traits of a neurodivergent condition even if they're not diagnosed, so whatever their kid is experiencing could just seem normal. My dad was like "what do you mean she's on the autistic spectrum she's not she's just like me" and Dad... I have news for you...

It's really fun having both because you get into this cycle of looking helplessly for your trigger when it's not been triggered at all, leading to a very late realization that it's the mood disorder not the ADHD. And then when it's the ADHD mood swing you tend to just....assume you're stuck for a while because you can't remember the trigger that happened...
