  • In this video we’re going to take a look at each Ironman gear bag, we'll go over suggested items, start a checklist and give some hacks that help your Ironman transition. Links to downloads below:

    -------------
    I suggest spreading out each of your transition bags, labeling them with the number that Ironman has provided you and you might even want to use a checklist for each bag so that you know you’re not forgetting anything.
    Morning Bag -
    This is the bag that you’ll put everything that you’re wearing down to the race start. So if your race starts early and the weather is dark and chilly, you might have some warm up pants, sweatshirt, headlamp, and a bike pump.
    T1 - Bike Bag
    Most Ironman races that I’ve participated in have required that your helmet and bike shoes not be attached to your bike before the race. But I’ve always been able to put water bottles and nutrition on my bike before the swim. So I’ll typically put the helmet and shoes in this Bike Bag. You’ll typically have a tent or changing area that you’ll have access to so you could change clothes completely. Other items that you might consider for this bag : bike shammy cream, sunscreen, nutrition.
    Bike Special Needs Bag
    Typically, you’ll have access to this bag in the middle of your race somewhere. But Ironman will typically publish an “Athlete Guide” about a week before the race and it really is worth reading. Two things to keep in mind as you pack your bike special needs bag,
    #1. You will have to slow down (and probably stop) to get this bag. You can call out your number and the volunteers will do a really great job finding your bag as fast as possible but it just takes time for them to find your bag amongst the 1000s of special needs bags.
    #2. If you don’t grab what ever is in your special needs bag, it’ll often be thrown away or donated to charity.
    I put an extra C02 cartridge and some extra gels or nutrition.
    T2 - Run Bag
    Running shoes. I also put a hat in here and some more gels that I’ll carry with me on the run.
    Run Special Needs Bag
    I’ll typically only put a few gels in here but the last IM race I did, I didn’t even put a Run Special needs bag out.
    HACKS
    Some people will put extra water bottles in their special needs bags with inspirational messages written on them. - Jenn Brooks
    I’ve seen people put ribbon on their transition bags to distinguish their bags from all of the other 1000s transition bags. I haven’t used ribbon but I’ve used tinfoil.

    Matt, Thank you! This video was helpful. I'm doing 70.3 NC next weekend. It's my first split transition 70.3 and your video helped with a lot of my questions.

      +Scott Donaldson - That is so nice to hear. Best of luck at 70.3 NC and hopefully you’ll have one less thing to worry about. Are you on Instagram or anything? I’d love to see how you end up doing in your race. Thanks for watching and taking the extra time to comment!

    “Not too much, not too much in this bag.” • And solid idea about ribbons ... or especially TINFOIL on transition bags.

      Thank you Jeff - It's surprisingly effective. I think I came up with that while scurrying around an Airbnb looking for something that might work. Hope your training is going well 👍

    I also like packing two small towels to dry my face/hair (I’m not balding ehe) and feet if they’re too sandy after the swim. Makes the ride way more comfortable.
    Love the tin foil idea! Definitely adding that to my next race thank you.

      Just me balding? 🤦🏻‍♂️ I love the foil trick. It's so fast to find your bag and you'll wonder how everyone else is going to figure it out. Report back and let me know how your next race goes and thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

    Good vid... very useful info. Have noted as your recovery progresses... your sarcasm increases!!
    A hack @Justindoestriathlon suggested was taking a picture on your phone of the contents of any bag you pack for race day laid out so that when you panic and wonder if you have a certain item, just look at the snapshot rather than unpacking which runs the risk of something getting left out.
    As always good vid. Keep'm coming.

    Hi Matt, I'm looking at getting a new bike, the one behind you in this video looks pretty awesome, any chance you could list the components?

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is an older Trek Speed Concept with a mix of Dura Ace and Ultegra Di2 components. It's got Enve wheels. I think I'm going to sell off all of the components except the frame. Are you training for an Ironman? I have a video coming up where I look at the top ten pro triathletes and what bikes they're riding. Might be interesting. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

    Thanks Matt! Training for my first 70.3 taking place in Sept 2023 and this video was helpful. It doesn't look your transition bags are in your specific designated area (ex. by your bike). So do you grab your transition bag then head to your bike? Do you have a transition video I can watch? I haven't participated in a triathlon yet.

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  ปีที่แล้ว

      Each triathlon can be different so check with the race instructions but for Ironman races you’ll probably exit the swim, find your bag, and then go to your bike (T1). I’d recommend you find a small local Olympic distance race before your September race so you can practice all of these little things. Best of luck and let me know how it goes!!! 👍

      Depends on the race. Check the race instructions. They'll provide drop off times for the transition bags. Best of luck Chris! Keep me posted on how the race goes!
