For those who want fast transitions but hate cycling and running barefoot, like me, this helps with the socks: Coat the inside of your socks with a little bit of baby powder, just like you do for your shoes. Next, roll your socks down so the only unrolled part is what covers the first half of your foot. With that, you should be able to slid the cap over the front of your foot and then immediately roll the rest of it up your foot and leg. Takes only a couple of seconds per foot if you practice it, much quicker than trying to put a sock on a wet foot the old fashioned way. In my last tri, my swim/bike/run AG placements were 7/11/12, respectively, but my transitions were 5th and 3rd fastest.
I do socks - better to do the socks and no blisters especially half ironman. I do my socks in T1. I still got 5th in my division for T1 even with sock putting on. 1 minute 28 so pretty please with that last year. Totally agree with with just having them all rolled out ready - only takes a few seconds. I also just run in my bike shoes and hop on my bike rather than jump on. I'm too paranoid about falling off.
If using a power meter, pair and calibrate in transition. With auto pause enabled on your head unit, you can then press start - the head unit will immediately stop since bike isn’t moving but it will keep the power meter on and paired while you are swimming.
I love transition Ironman Weymouth 16 mins although was preparing for the the wet and windy ride along with a wee break..... resulted in awesome ride....
When setting up the bike computer use the settings so it will automatically start recording your ride at a given speed. I set it up to start recordind at 10kph. Press the start mutton prior to the race and it will auto pause until you get on your bike. This saves you from forgetting to press the start button in all the excitement of the race. It also auto pauses when you get off and rack your bike😁
Can you do a video on flying mount? Or have you done one? Global Triathlon network has done one, but hoping you can do one with some nice breakdown for those of us who are scared to get on and off without our shoes.
I was particularly interested in the section of the segment about having your shoes already clipped to the pedal, when/how do I get rid of the rubber bands? Thanks for the awesome content!
@@djlemma Thank you! I assumed it was something simple like that, but I didn't want to try. I'm still getting use to pedal clips so I didn't want to get too adventurous LOL
@@jjbellfrey I don't want to scare you but I did fall a couple times while learning, but now I really feel weird any time I ride a bike without them. Especially when I'm standing up and climbing a hill, it's so nice to feel connected to the bike. When you decide to try tri shoes and the rubber bands, just find an empty parking lot somewhere and just do a bunch of mounts and dismounts.
@@djlemma Thanks! I appreciate the tips. I have taken a couple of spills. One on carpet (I was practicing clipping in and out in the living room with one foot) and a couple times in the neighborhood but I managed to get myself to a moderately soft landing. LOL
Hello Taren, great video thanks for that. Quickly, when it comes to the elastics, once you have placed your feet in, they will basically be stretched and cut correct? There is no danger having them stuck anywhere right? Hope those questions are not silly. Thank you very much for your time!
Excellent video, Taren. You make transitioning look like art (and effortless)! I was wondering about something else that I find hard to get clarification on regarding triathlons (especially Ironman halves and fulls)....penalties. I am relatively new to the sport and training for a full Ironman for next year. I recently learned different courses have different penalties (and conversely, allow certain things that other courses deem penalties). The websites do not really make it clear so I was wondering if you could do a video on penalties (what are possible penalties, how do you handle them, what does it mean for your race, have you ever gotten a penalty, etc)? I am most worried about biking penalties but that is also my least experienced sport of the three so perhaps the anxiety will go away once I get into a group and learn etiquette/rules? Thanks for all you do for us, Taren!
Basically, every race is different so it would be tough to do a video to cover every possible penalty. Before a race, typicaly the info would be on the website for that race... and there will always be a pre-race athlete meeting where they'll outline that stuff for you. Always. If you have other questions, though, you can always contact the race director (do it about a week in advance before they become too busy) and ask.
Another great video, thanks Do you wear your heart rate monitor for the swim? Do you connect it to your Wahoo bike computer or your Garmin watch or both? Thanks again👍
These tips are awesome! Maybe except the Vaseline haha. (I like my socks!!) I just use no show running socks so I can have socks without compromising that iconic triathlete no socks look! :D
Hi Taren, cool video again FREE SPEED. I like that! Ive got the powerbreather too. Water gets in your nose because of the pressure difference. flipturns just don't work (not even with the special extensions on it). You have to get used to the extra lung power you need, just to breathe. but that can be a cool extra dimension in training. Open water is a blast though: nose clip on and go! all in all it seamed like an awesome device when I bought it, but surely improvements can be made for poolswimming ;)
Although this is nothing to do with the video. I have a question regarding indoor trainers. Now I have a WattBike at my disposal and really like training on it, just wondered if you know if it can connect to Zwift? Or if anyone else reading this knows?
I'm going to tell you a secret. You pee while on the bike, not while in transition. Yes, I know, disgusting. But trust me, everyone does it. That's why everyone's bike shoes smell like pee. (I'm not kidding.)

I approve this message. this is what I do because I just can't run barefoot without getting crazy blisters.

I realize Im kind of off topic but do anybody know a good site to stream new movies online?
@Jayce Jaime try FlixZone. You can find it on google =)
@Jagger Valentino Definitely, I've been using Flixzone for since april myself :D

Use cheap rubber bands, they'll snap once you start pedaling. If they don't you can reach down and snap them as you are velcro-ing up your shoes.

Thank you, Taren! I had no idea that they had a pre-race athlete meeting for things like this so this is very useful knowledge.
What about using "second skin" or a similar product to help prevent blisters? I may try that.
Thanks for the tips
Mahalo for another helpful video, Taren. I'd really like a vid(s) from you on Xterra racing/training. 5 Wks until Xterra Worlds!
Another great video, thanks

How do the shoes hold up to that much vasoline? Is some type of special cleaning needed afterwards?
Nope, it seems to pretty much dissipate after that many hours!
Would you please do a full review of the Ameo Powerbreather? Is it worth the money? Thanks.
I've only tried it once, so far not a great experience but I wouldn't ever review something on one try only.
When you have more experience with them, could you then do a review?
Question: what (if anything) do you do with the residual vaseline in your shoes after the race? Do you clean them in any way?
It's all pretty much absorbed and gone by that time, actually.

Great point, I used it in the pool and it was tricky as heck... but might be different in open water! Great tip!
What do you guys recommend about triathlon specific bike shoes?
I'm not sure what you mean...? I don't recommend any specific shoes, if that's what you're asking. I use Shimano and I like them.
@@TriathlonTaren thank you very much!
Where did you get your wall mounted bike racks from?
They're called DaHanger -- you can get them online!
Triathlon Taren roger that. Keep up the good work!

Taren, during all my half and full ironman event I have lost around a minute for the pee stop in T2, how do you deal with this? Thanks
I'm going to tell you a secret. You pee while on the bike, not while in transition. Yes, I know, disgusting. But trust me, everyone does it. That's why everyone's bike shoes smell like pee. (I'm not kidding.)
Triathlon Taren are you going to do a video to teach the technique? Lol
you have to put your race belt on in T1? I thought you only needed it for T2
You need to wear your number the whole time...
Oops. You can't just use your helmet number for the bike? I haven't used my racing belt the only 2 triathlons I've done.
Hows it goin Transition Taren?
Why do you have 20kg plates leaning against your disc wheel? I'm concerned for the health of your wheel. #triathlontarenwheelcare
Same...
I think they're helping hold the bike up, but it is disconcerting
Just holding the bike up, it's all good. :)
Well that's about as interesting a hack for keeping your bike upright without a bike stand or trainer as I've seen!
awesome ! ;)
👍
What the actual fuck. Check out the graphs, someone actually took 14 minutes on T2
Had a bite of brunch, then onto the run. Haha.
