Yeah I thought this too. In a way it makes him almost child like because he can’t think of the words he’s wants to say. But the fact he doesn’t snap back with something disrespectful and disgusting shows he’s actually changed as a person slightly (as much as some one like Tommy can change) which is probably because of Ryan visiting him and softening him a little. Really great writing.
I don't think he was a psychopath. A true psychopath has zero empathy, yet he genuinely cared for his son. I believe he was destroyed by his childhood and that's why he turned out like this.
What I loved about this was the build up because James acted being physically hurt so well. In too many programmes the protagonist (or indeed antagonist) gets 10 bells beaten out of them but they carry on as if they’ve been barely scratched. Tommy’s severe wounds were obviously so painful and debilitating and James winced and gasped his way through the entire ordeal. Exceptional high quality TV.
This was one of my all time favourite scenes. The acting was mesmerising. This conversation was so satisfying. I was in tears the whole way through it.
Especially since they aren't delivering 'perfectly crafted words' at each other: the dialogue is messy, neither of them is sure of their points all the way through, they talk over each other.
God what an actress. That's Oscar-worthy acting right there. And in a TV show! She did that - voice, body, face, eyes, everything - within the schedule of a TV show. Holy crap. She's not trying to look beautiful, or all that shit. She barely even moves. But she's full-on acting a human being in that human situation, and it gives chills, and goosebumps and holy crap awe.

Thus scene, whoarrr!!! I was veering from feeling empathy for him to yelling at her not to provoke him, to watching the flashes of anger in him and going oh no oh no, especially when he started saying "really really" and looking like he was about to lunge. Amazing plausible scene, especially when Catherine wasn't in a huge hurry to put out the flames 😶
I just hope that Sarah Lancashire and James Norton, and all the other actors and writers read these comments... But when you see just about the best acting there is to see... Just makes you wonder. Can the BBC even top this? I have no other words ... the timing in the pauses where impeccable on all the scenes that needed it.. even the make-up dept was blinding.
Amazing scene! James was able to act out the physical pain from the injuries and made that so real. And then also act out the emotional anger and all the depths of the psychopath. Brilliant actor. Sarah is fine here too.
Daniel Day Lewis would approve of this from both, but Sarah hit an elite level right here This really top notch from these two! Brilliant show Great actors Awesome scene
A war of words if done right, is far more thrilling and fulfilling to watch than a fight, and by God this was done so right! The best battle I have ever seen on TV! Both Sarah and James were so incredible in their roles!
Can you imagine the tension Sarah must have to deal with after a day’s shooting. It must take hours for her to recover after each episode. There is a drama book called “Acting is Believing” and she portrays every character she has ever played in such a magnificent way that we often have to hold our breath to see if she will manage to break free of situations. Mesmerizing is almost too weak a word to describe her ability to draw us in. 💓🧑✈️
This series and this scene was phenomenal. It was the best choice to focus on speech and their acting in this final scene it is mesmerising. Two of the best actors this country has.

the acting masterclass that is this scene leaves some of last year's Oscars in the dust of its dust. Mag-effing-ificent! Whatever Sally Wainwright and Sarah Lancashire touch turns is a ratings sure thing!
It took me a couple of starts on the first episode to get into it. It looked like it was going to be a bit boring. But for some reason, I watched the first episode and I was in. If she wasn't before, Sarah Lancashire is now a national treasure. She was incredible! And it's strange that you never see her character as unbelievable, despite her being a woman who wasn't a spring chicken. You believed she could take on the biggest and hardest of the big and hard because she was just tougher, even when we saw her vulnerable side. The only 'down side' was not really knowing how much sympathy could be afforded to Tommy. What was the real story with him and Becky, since the truth is usually somewhere in the middle of the two sides of a story. It's just sad that it's over, unless they follow that throwaway comment where that detective suggested that Ryan gave off police officer vibes. Catherine retired and Ryan solving cases with a little help from his granny whilst they all try to deal with their past's?
Great review Michelle. I think it’s a tremendous testimony to the writers skill that we can even consider feeling a flash of ambivalence about Tommy. And the fact that the actors could communicate that so powerfully!
I think it's pretty clear what TLR thinks of women from his murder of Kristen and rape, etc of Ann, so I doubt he was any better towards Becky, who was no angel but surely was driven to suicide after getting involved with him and his degrading behavior and speech. Any man (or person) who can strike another without hesitation has more than a few screws loose.
That's partly why the series is so good - even now, even knowing what Tommy has done, there are still moments where he might actually have a point (Hmmmm. no) and really might not be an evil schemer as much as someone who really is just not bright.
I do think Tommy loved Becky in his own twisted and awful way, he seems genuinely upset to find out she’s dead in series one. Perhaps the reason he’s so fixated on winning over Ryan is because he is his only link to her.
I feel her anger… it’s like arguing with a bloody child when it comes to Tommy 😂 “yeah well ur just not… very bright by saying that” 😂 solid comeback (you delinquent F) 😅
Please upload the line from Tommy after this also. “Yeah well know this, last night I had a petrol can and a box of matches and the thought did cross my mind to burn your house down and all the sh*t in it. But I didn’t, and then I was looking through old photos of Becky and my son. And, do you know what I realised…I realised what a nice life he’s had, and what a nice life you’ve given him. A better life than I ever had. I hated you, I hated you, for not telling me that I had a boy. But then last night I had a glimpse of what a nice life he’s had..and I don’t hate you anymore” Brilliant finale and performances as ever. The first time I watched James Norton was in the 2016 adaptation of War and Peace so it was odd starting Happy Valley after that. It was a little too rushed for a final series for me but still pure quality. Did anyone else think there was going to be a twist at the end? I thought it might be discovered that the boy wasn’t actually Tommys son or there was a different more ambiguous side to the backstory after the last few words before (you know what)
I guess the twist was that Tommy really did love the daughter so couldn’t handle it when she wanted nothing to do with him anymore which is why he raped her.

The scene is very powerful and touching. Too bad the series is over. The filmmakers -- director and scriptwriter -- could have kept Tommy alive. There is still work to be done on his personality and on the series. Yes, the crimes of the pharmacist are not disclosed. So a slight disappointment.
thanks for the clarification. I watched the series. This is not an investigation. Many pharmacists sell medicines without prescriptions. And the place of residence it's not proof of murder. In the detective, the investigation process is interesting. What traces did this killer leave? Just saying to someone on the phone what the viewer has known for a long time -- since the season before last -- is bad for a series of this class. So does the text message about Tommy's death. Logically, she would have to personally check in the morgue to make sure that the body hadn't been changed to another burnt one... And the theme of the girl in the jacket ( one of the pharmacist's daughters) is not disclosed. There was a phone dropped from the victim in the house. The film crew was obviously too lazy or funding ended. n short - the end is crumpled. And this strong good scene does not excuse.

I think I now know what drug addicts mean when they say they're always chasing that high they got when first trying drugs but never really getting anything close to that feeling again. This show.. the writing, the acting, _THE_ Sarah Lancashire.. it's ruined all other tv shows for me. Nothing else even comes close to this.

Impeccable, basically. The fact it's set in Yorkshire and isn't steeped in waxy OTT USA-like rubbish makes it that little bit more realistic, special. Authentic. Believable.
I was so convinced by James’ brilliant acting in this series that I can no longer watch him in anything without thinking he’s a psycho 😫 I tried to watch him in Grantchester where he plays a crime solving Reverend but whenever I saw his face, I just couldn’t get this wicked character out of my mind so couldn’t get through the first episode 🥲

For a moment i think even he realised how full of shit he was
Perfect
I was tense watching this they where amazing. Amazing acting and so got me drawn. In2 and I had tears . I will miss it. Well done guys
Sarah Lancashire and James Norton were great in this scene .Great acting here .Oscars for both here and The Team behind the scenes also deserve oscars for this showdown scene involving both James Norton and Sarah Lancashire,Top Performance from both .🎥😯😪
1:23-Me to anything over the past 3 years ranging from Boris Johnson, Covid, The Russia V Ukraine war The Cost of Living Crisis, Liz Truss the shortest PM ever and of course the small matter of Partygate as well.
Incredible acting!!
Just remarkable writing and acting ! Have been binge watching all previous episodes since last week - Sarah lancashire needs to be made a dame given Helen Mirren is one ! Dont know what to watch now 😢
Its a good job that scene didn't last much longer ! there would have been people all over the country passing out from holding their breath !
Wow wicked show
Two absolutely brilliant actors!
Sarah Lancashire in ‘Rose and Maloney’ series, great stuff
‘I take its Marbella is off the menu’😂😂
James Norton should be DC Universe Ultraman
Tommy lee really did love his son, hes a nutter but he def loved Ryan
I adore both actors. James Norton is 🥵
I think I now know what drug addicts mean when they say they're always chasing that high they got when first trying drugs but never really getting anything close to that feeling again. This show.. the writing, the acting, _THE_ Sarah Lancashire.. it's ruined all other tv shows for me. Nothing else even comes close to this.
This scene broke me.
Happy valley and line of duty best bbc dramas
Fantastic❤
The script here is actually believable and feels natural, that's impressive these days.
He’s very northern, I love the northern accent it’s a good show
the real hero of this story is ryan xho despite all the shit he gas, been through (suicide mother rapist father his grandmother who didn't khow how to love him and show him affection and who did her best)he made his choice to denociate his fucked up crazy psycho deluged genetor and has proven to everyone including his grandmother that he s nothing like him what a Hero hatts off
Impeccable, basically.
The fact it's set in Yorkshire and isn't steeped in waxy OTT USA-like rubbish makes it that little bit more realistic, special. Authentic. Believable.
This is season 3? How does it end?
It sure ain't an afternoon amusement. This needs a few more serious. It's gripping and entertaining. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was so convinced by James’ brilliant acting in this series that I can no longer watch him in anything without thinking he’s a psycho 😫
I tried to watch him in Grantchester where he plays a crime solving Reverend but whenever I saw his face, I just couldn’t get this wicked character out of my mind so couldn’t get through the first episode 🥲
Acting fantastic..........
But the "wrapping up" of this brilliant series was Poor..!!!!
Wow! Extremely dramatic and free with the “f” word which doesn’t bother me. In fact adds reality to the scene. Norton is a very good actor as is S. L.
I liked how this sign showed he wasn't a criminal mastermind. He was just a sick, violet man
And this year`s Bafta goes to . . . . .
Wow 💝
The best ending ever!
UK have the Best Drama shows . When is this coming on Brittbox?
Raquels still gorgeous 😁👍
