Funny thing is, I don't think street food could have exploded like it did without GPS and Google Maps. Using a Thomas Guide and Yellow Pages wouldn't work at all! Maybe some other analog way, like driving around?

Man I love the explanation of the Thomas Guide. When I moved to LA back in 2007. My employer gave me a T-Guide and said good luck finding your way around. Takes me back. Fun videos.
How about a review of LA’s oldest surviving restaurants? (Galco’s, Tam O’Shanter, Musso & Frank Grill, Coles, Taix, The Original Pantry Cafe, Barney’s Beanery, El Cholo, El Coyote, etc etc)
@bemorton Yes to all those (esp Barney's Beanery) and please also do Fatburger (orig is on Western but I grew up loving the one in Westwood Village-wd be a new LA area w lots of history- for you to explore), also Tail o the Pup in W Hollywood-has been there forever, & Du-Par's diner, & Marie Callender's, all go way back.
Enjoying the culture / history segments and the challenge aspect of your videos! My partner's dad, before retiring a couple years ago, was still using a thomas guide to map routes out all around california - feels like a lost art. Looking forward to more !!
Funny thing is, I saw a Thomas Guide in the book area of Sam's. I almost bought it just for entertainment. Then I realized we probably have a few out in the shed.
I love the positive vibes of your videos! I’ve been here for so long that I forget how magical and adventure-filled and beautiful LA can be. Nowadays I’m usually just complaining about the traffic. But your content reminds me why I love this city and why some traffic is worth it :)
I just found these videos and have happily gone through them immediately. I love this content, and love seeing someone exploring the food around my home. Please keep up these fun videos ❤
Brian I think your videos are really good and also at least to me very very funny. Having been born and raised and grown up in LA with a Thomas guide in my trunk since I was 16 years old I find it funny that you have to explain to people how it works. And yes, Langers has the best pastrami in the world. Keep up the great videos! Now I'm going to see how a dog gets cremated. 😂
I’m so glad you’re enjoying the vids! Thank you so much for the support. I can’t stop thinking about that pastrami 🤤. The dog video is a deep cut, pretty different from the vids I’m making now 😅

I found an old Thomas guide in my parents garage and I was like, the fuck is this, this is nuts!! Hahaha. The best thing I did tho when I moved to LA in 2015 was forcing myself to get around on weekends without google maps. I learned the city so well and got to actually see it and discover random new places.
I used to be a point to point messenger in LA and didn't get a smart phone until 2014 so watching you cross town using a Thomas guide was super nostalgic
My dad used to use Thomas Guide’s growing up. I used Mapquest 15 years ago, and have been a tech addict since smartphones came out. These handicap challenges you’re imposing are fun. Keep it up man!

I enjoyed the content and your presentation style. As an antique Angeleno I like how you bring an appreciation of the city to a wide audience. L.A. is so demographically and geographically vast and varied that it's easy to overlook a lot of the good stuff it has to offer. The Thomas Guide was one of my work tools for several years. I think it's brilliant how you broke it down for the uninitiated. It's like the dial phone or cassette tape, something we oldsters used on the daily, but the youngsters have no clue about. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to have to limit your content to a manageable length and budget, so you're forgiven for keeping it to only 6 icons. Perhaps this is 'Icons, vol. 1'? Maybe in the future you can add Tito's Tacos in Culver City, Carney's on Sunset Bl, the last Bob's Big Boy in Burbank? Technically Tito's and Bob's aren't L.A., but they are iconic to So CA. Keep it up!
