@matuopm I can charge my almost four years old Hyundai Ioniq electric in 18 mins, why should this brand new car not be able to do the same? Audi use the same battery technology and they also produce very consistent and repeatable fast charging speeds. I'd be more skeptical when it comes to range.

Generally, the first 50-80% of a battery recharges the “easiest” and fastest. So I’m not too surprised that this is feasible with technical innovations. It’s also better for the battery... charging to 100% puts more stress on it, and reduces the total lifetime charge cycle count. I’m not a long haul trucker... I need breaks so I don’t fall asleep behind the wheel. I don’t know what the estimated highway range is with that 80% battery charge, but (apart from last year) I drive about 630 miles every year to visit family a few states away. Three breaks along that trip sounds about right for how often I have to stop already.

Obviously, both IONIQ 5 versions have the same cells, that's why both the 58kWh and 76kWh versions of the IONIQ 5 charge in 18 mins, just like my 28kWh IONIQ does. However, the 76kWh version charges 350km in those 18 mins, the 58kWh version 280km and my 28kWh IONIQ charges around 160km in said time, that's where battery size comes into play (charging speed in km per hr). The IONIQ 5 uses LiPo NMC pouch cells, just like my old IONIQ. You can easily verify the 18 mins charging time of the original 28kWh IONIQ by looking at its charging curve on numerous websites. It starts at 62kW at 0% and then linearly increases to 70kW at 77%, where it throttles rather sharply, dropping to 50kW by around 80% which is where I usually pull the plug. That's a very different curve compared to, say, Tesla or the Kona, but the same as that of the Audi eTron 55. It is thus save to assume that the IONIQ 5 employs similarish cells and has a similarish charging curve. Hence the 800V System.
My parents, who were extremely anti EV (they're classic "Boomers" so to speak) bought an IONIQ 5 on the highest trim level 4 months ago and they're still in love. Now they question themselves, why they didn't make the switch to electric sooner. That's the power of a great EV; it convinces petrolheads to try out something new, something futuristic. The car that first had this effect was made by Tesla. Now that same feeling is induced by Hyudai, a brand laughed at for their ugly cars and zero quality before the 2010s.
Just WOW from Germany. - There is so much more to this car than driving and beeing more efficient and cheaper than a fossil car. -> It gives you the opportunity to stabilize the whole grid system, power your home slightly, and just be a moving energy storage instead of a moving heating device which side effect is movement (fossil). I drove an original 1986 Hyundai Excel GLS off the lot at Cerritos Hyundai with 17 miles on the odometer. I drove it for eight years, and it was, in a word, a nightmare to keep on the road. I swore off Hyundai vehicles for years, and then we bought a 2005 Tucson for my wife. What a difference 20 years made. That Tucson was unstoppable, and we had literally zero maintenance issues with it. It got taken out when a stolen panel van hit it going close to 50 mph - despite the violence of the accident, the Tucson did exactly what it was supposed to do and protected my best friend from harm. I wanted an all-electric vehicle, and I found a 2017 Ioniq Ultimate that had been shipped to an Oregon Hyundai dealer on accident. If 20 years had made a huge difference, the 12 going from our Tucson to the Ioniq were just as dramatic. My Ioniq is, without a doubt, the best, most comfortable, most reliable car I've ever driven. Seeing the Ioniq 5 launch video just shows that Hyundai is in it to win it. This new marque is going to be a game changer. They hit the ground running with the original Ioniq, and the forthcoming vehicles are only going to push them into the stratosphere. Well done, Hyundai, well done.
The _pixelated_ design element, as found in the headlights and turn signal designs, is _genius._ I would love to see this design concept evolve further in other future projects! The metallic exterior paint choices are, um, literally _brilliant_ as well. Kudos to all the design teams involved! 💗

You probably haven't seen the Hyundai ev charger yet. Can go above 800 volt (1500volt i think) And charge on any side of an ev. As the cable comes down from above the car.
@@ATM648 The e-Niro was (and is!) great but the Niro was always meant to have ICE/hybrid drivetrains as well. Of course, despite that, it's amazingly efficient. Some people look at an e-Niro and Tesla and say "the e-Niro is so old fashioned!" but I don't think the same criticism can be levelled at the IONIQ 5 with 800v architecture, OTA updates, 220v outlet. That said, let's wait and see! Obviously Tesla still have Superchargers...
