At 14:46 when he makes a realization... It is truly haunting and real of him. A genuine look of terror and sadness and horror. That's when you the game developers knew they did something right, by doing something so wrong.
I know, right? Like, he's always getting scared in this game anyway, but, like, all the jumpscares and monsters are the "Ah! Scary game and jumpscares!" kinda scary. As in, it's a funny kind of scary that the rest of the game is.
Here, however, that realization of what the shoe pit means is ironically much scarier, because that's the "oh God, so many innocent people have died here for probably no reason" kind of scary, which, despite not having any jumpscares or a creepy atmoshere, is MUCH scarier because what it means is much closer to reality than any Slenderman monster or could ever be. That look on Mark's face, along with the faces on the rest of us when we first saw that shoe pit, probably held more terror for that realization than for the rest of the entire game combined.

But seriously, it is haunting, mainly because most people will recognise the Holocaust reference. Empty shoes are now internationally known as a representation of mass death.

I have a very interesting theory that I would like to share with the community,. This theory supports the fact, that the Chef enemies you encounter later in the game, are most likely women. By now you are probably confused and think this theory is absolutely dumb. SPOILERS: As some people know, when you complete the game you defeat the Geisha or the Woman who appears to be a some sort of Paranormal entity wielding a suspicious power. When you defeat her you gain her abilities. But before you do all of that, when your in the "Lady Quarters" there are pictures hung on the wall which are closely resembled to the Geisha herself and possibly her sisters. On the internet, it is believed, that the Geisha is obsessed with beauty, and wants everyone to be ugly. Including her relatives... So I think she made her sisters ugly, creating the Chefs, and cast them down to kitchen to feed the "Guests" strange food to make them ugly as well... So that about does it for my theory on how the Chefs came into existence. Please respond on what you think.
