Quick Question: On Number 6, the value for C is -2 and when you plugged in the values for A, B, and C you put positive 2 rather than -2. Was there a reason for that, that I am not understanding? P.S. Thank you so much for the video. It helped tremendously!
You're right! c should be -2, it was mistakenly written as 2. However, the points, graph and vertex are all correct. Thanks 4 pointing that out to me Chelsey! I'll try 2 be more careful in future videos!
I have never been able to understand math until i starting watching these videos. This man is a god send to the math game :) THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Fort Bend Tutoring Thank you so much. The school i go to online does not offer the greatest way of explaining things and i failed my math class last time. I decided to go outside of the school and boy am i glad i did. Please never stop doing this because you have a great gift :D
You're a magician! Once again, you've made math not only lucid but entertaining. Thank you for teaching this so completely. I can't wait to share it with my students and see the lightbulb of understanding come on in their faces! You're the GOAT!
As always, it is an absolute pleasure to watch FBT videos. Mr. Whitt, you have a way of teaching that makes the topic understandable. I hope that you are recognized as an outstanding professor. Thank you.
I sure wish I would have found your videos about 5 weeks ago, when I got stuck taking an Algebra class for college and I have onky had 5 weeks to do it in. I am lousey in math and have been banging my hesd against the wall trying to get through it in time. My math class finishes today at noon, and I have jyst now found your site. I actually understood what steps I was to follow and everything. You made it seem so easy. I have only gad 1 othrr teacher in math that could explain it to me , like you did, and a light bulb go off in my head, like " no I understand". I tried several times to see the teacher yhis semester, because my class is online, but whenever I went to see her, she wasn' t there. To make a rambling story short, lol, I will now havrbto take yhe course again starting in January, but at least now, I know where to go for help! Thank you soooo much!!!
I have used your videos to help out a LOT in multiple classes now, Wanted to send you my thanks! Picked up one of your mugs since I know TH-cam probably doesn't pay the bills. Keep up the good work friend!
I have a maths test tomorrow on this exactly. I had no idea what to do, and you helped me so much! Your teaching style is so fun and interesting. I am a visual learner and the way you set out the points at the beginning made it so much simpler. Thank you. :)
I have my final on thursday and I've seen so many of your videos that I feel like I have learned more from you than from my teacher, who by the way sucks and makes everything confusing and all over the place! Thank you so much Mr. Whitt !
Your videos are amazing and are such a great help, I dont even know how to thank you enough. I did however want to let you know that some of the videos have a large amount of audio feedback ( humming noise) especially using headphones. Other than that you and fort bend turtoring help a lot of people and deliver a great service to the educational community THANKS
this helped so much, especially after finally figuring out that what you referred to vertex form, my textbook calls standard form and your standard form was being called quadratic form ...
Hi Mr. Whitt. The equation you are using is Y=a(x-h)^2+k but, the one I'm being taught at school is Y=a(x-p)^2+q. I was wondering if there's a difference between these two and I'm just looking at something else or if they're the same and just the variables are different?
My teacher never showed me this useful formula h=-b/2a and k=f(h). I had to go long process to get to standard form y=a(x-h)2-k. and I don't even think she knows this useful trick but I will let her know. I'm sure she will like it and let future students know it.
You're the best! I've been doing an online class with no teacher so I've adopted you....super helpful, better than the textbook by far. BUT, on this transformation of the functions, to find the vertex, I understand the (h,k) thing and how to find "H" with that formula but confused on how to find "K". Can you help?
Professor Whitt, this no real big deal really, but in problem #6, should not the C value be -2 instead of 2? Also, in problem #2, if we wan to change the parabola form of the equation into the vertex form, can we use completing the square to achieve that> Thank you much for the great videos sir~
You are correct. The c value should be -2 and you can use completing the square to convert the equation into vertex form. Thanks 4 the correction, it was warranted.
18:08 If I were you, I would not label all my "x" values from "-2" to "2" by a change of "1". I would list them from "-4" to "4" with the change of "2" because your leading coefficient is a fraction and graphing fractions is pretty tricky! I am trying to see how finding discriminants will help me check my work.
Hello Ritesh. The video is correct. For x = 1 → (1 - 2)² - 4 = (-1)² - 4 = 1 - 4 = -3 for y. For x = 3 → (3 - 2)² - 4 = (1)² - 4 = 1 - 4 = -3 for y. I hope that helps! Thanks 4 watching!
Hello good sir! Love your videos, it made me learn from Algebra to Graphing Functions (I'm in Grade 8), your soothing voice probably made me stay xD. But I would like to ask if you have a video about f(x)=(x-h)² It's part of the Graphing Functions, I was expecting that here as it was in my review list given by my teacher, hoping it will come >_
This video can be used for functions of this type. The difference is the “a” value is 1 and the “k” value is 0 when using the vertex form of a quadratic function. Therefore, the vertex will always lie on the x-axis and be in the form (h, 0). Hope that helps!
Where the heck are the videos that explain what these functions and graphs are for? Why do people think it's reasonable to teach stuff without explaining why you're using it?
+Jay Sprout One useful application for a quadratic function is a projectile or when something is thrown or dropped. The object will generally follow a parabolic path. Therefore, we can predict when and where something lands.

Sorry about all of the previous mispelled words. I have only had 11 hours in the past 3 days, working on my algebra.
No "problem"! I completely understand! :-)

BUT, on this transformation of the functions, to find the vertex, I understand the (h,k) thing and how to find "H" with that formula but confused on how to find "K". Can you help?
Amy Henry Sure! Once you find "h", plug that value into the original equation. Then simplify, to find "k".
Fort Bend Tutoring Thanks Mr. Whitt!
Hi, Mr. Whitt! Question: In problem #6, why was the c value not -2?
+Seven OneEight I made a mistake. The correct value for c is -2. Great catch!
Oh! I thought all I had learned from you had gone down the drain! Lol! Thanks for clarifying...
+Seven OneEight Nope. You're good, I'm just human and will make a mistake every once and awhile.
No problem at all. You do an amazing job! I appreciate you!

18:08 If I were you, I would not label all my "x" values from "-2" to "2" by a change of "1". I would list them from "-4" to "4" with the change of "2" because your leading coefficient is a fraction and graphing fractions is pretty tricky! I just watched the discriminate video, and you said when you have a discriminate of zero, you have 1 x intercept and 1 real rational solution. So, here we have a zero discriminant, I hope. So, I am assuming that the x intercept here is 0? So, if that is so, does that mean that all 0 discriminants will be on the x axis? Just touching? I am trying to see how finding discriminants will help me check my work.
+EZEPROJECTS Yes, all zero discriminants have x-intercepts that just touch the x-axis.
So, it doesn't matter what is put in for x ? On the chart
No, it doesn't. But, your graph will be even and easy if you use our suggested values.
What if you need to graph a quadratic function that doesn't have c-value:
Such as:
y=x^2-1
+Fiaau Tautolo then the c value is zero
pedro cortes
What?
the c value is 1 you noob watch the video again
Do you have to insult me?
im stuck!! how do I solve 2(-1/3)
Place 2/1 and multiply (-1/3) straight across to get -2/3.
mr whitt how come in example 3 for x=1 you got y=-3 its supposed to be y=-4 and for x=3 its supposed to be y=-4 not y=-3
But I would like to ask if you have a video about f(x)=(x-h)²

This video can be used for functions of this type. The difference is the “a” value is 1 and the “k” value is 0 when using the vertex form of a quadratic function. Therefore, the vertex will always lie on the x-axis and be in the form (h, 0). Hope that helps!

what's a vertigo palabra?
+Mladin Alexandru Lol That's what I want 2 know! What IS vertigo palabra?
it's how you graph your aquatic functions.
Done AND done.
+Mladin Alexandru Awesome! ;-)
I don't understand how you got the rest of your XY values. I see how you got your Vortex and AOS, but not the rest of your XY values.
+septube26 I chose them from the domain of the function. Basically I just picked values next to the vertex.
For #2, on test point for -1, I plug in -1 for x value then solve it then I got -1 not 1.
Check your work and make sure you’re using the correct order of operations.
