Victorians and the Curse of Drink (Poverty, Jail and Death in the 19th Century)

  • Drink was both a pleasure, and a curse, in the Victorian era. Beer and Gin was affordable for the working classes and safer than drinking water! Public houses were everywhere, and intoxication offered a temporary means of escape from the stark realities of everyday life. Drink was closely associated with poverty and was often the focus of attention for philanthropists seeking to address social ills with the morality of abstinence.
One such man was John Gough who battled with drink and became an advocate for temperance. In this video you will hear an account by Gough on the evils of drink - following his travels, the people he met and the letters he received. You will discover just how much a part it played in people's lives from all walks of society, and how its influence could drag a man, and his family along with him, into poverty, gaol, or, worse still - death.

I’m 67 days sober today. I was never an alcoholic. I just felt that being drunk or hungover was a waste of time. The damage alcohol has done to human society is indescribable.

Addiction is slavery. Lost 25 years of my life to it. I've been free for eight years but I'm never more than one moment of weakness away from kneeling to the master. That's what keeps me green.

This year on Jan 1st will be 30 years since I drank. I come from a long line of alcoholics and feel so happy and grateful that I am a gap in the line, because my life was becoming more and more derelict.

The UK has a terrible problem with alcohol, whereas young people get dangerously drunk on weekends, end up in the emergency ward of hospitals. Sometimes nothing but entire rooms of vomiting, drunk youths, cared for free by NHA. Free ambulance rides as well.

I think it's interesting how in the eventual prohibition (in the US) there were massive consequences, but the prohibitionists weren't wrong. They were RIGHT about how destructive alcohol was to people and society. They had first-hand knowledge of what it does and how it works. And not only that, it was an early flexing of women's power trying to change society and their own families for the better. But it also makes sense that in such a horrible society, especially in poverty, that some wanted to get blasted drunk as often as possible. It's interesting how the drinkers can be villains and victims at the same time.

Listening to this brought back memories of when my dad was a violent alcoholic and drug user. For 9 years, we ( my younger sister and myself) had to witness this, and we came from families addicted to something, and we vowed to never forget what we went through and to never become addicted to anything.
It’s a decision to pick up the bottle, the decision to drink until blackout drunk, and a decision to put drink before family.

If I had to live like that I would have been a cryin drunk. I couldn't drink enough to take my mind off that squalor. Alcohol still does that. It's not like it improves life I don't care what people tell themselves. Debtors prison was the dumbest idea ever.

I like that too. I find history fascinating, especially wrt how people of middle-to-lower classes lived. It gives Dickens' Christmas Carol a greater historical context. These folks weren't just poor. They were just flat destitute. I never knew they lived in such rodent-infested squalor.

Nothing to do with this vid, which as usual was wonderful but...
I was browsing on line, in the many assorted mysteries of clearance items when I saw a book, costing $93.
It was a text book titled "Slums and Slum Clearances in Victorian London"
And I found myself gloating "I can get better info, better explained, from Fact Feast"
So I had to tell you straight away!
(Full disclosure, there was another listing for the same book at over $900 but that's just silly. Unless one was in print n the other online?)
Anyway, as always, thank you for your insightful research and poetic narration. I wonder how many saps spent $90 when they could have been entertained as well as educated...for free.. technically.

You can ask your parents and grandparents what their parents and grandparents told them about their lives when they were young. Chances are you will find word of mouth history of your family during Victorian and Edwardian times.
If you ask you might be surprised that some of your more ancient ancestors were pre Roman Britons or/and Celts and even the main tribes. Of course tribes did intermarry and interbreed but one marriage partner would usually go to live in the tribe of the other and become known as a member of that tribe, although many tribes came here and settled in large enough numbers to not need to intermarry too much to avoid inbreeding. I know quite a lot of tribes my family came from. I wish my own adult sons would take more interest so our history isn't lost in the global cauldron.

How are you doing sir merry Christmas happy new year in advance as always iam gathering main information about topics you mentioned briefly here it’s actually Victorians and Edwardians drank for pleasure but they also drink for pain as use of alcohol as treatment in medical practice continued throughout 19and 20 th centuries. Druckness was huge problem not just in London but throughout whole of country in later decades of 19 th century. Press coverage that ended to focus on East end of London as being breeding ground for majority of vices that blighted Victorian society as drinking habits victims of drink tragic results of propensity to drink husband goes to bed his wife is still out of doors drinking with her friends many men are unaware their wives take their husbands Sunday clothes on Monday morning to pawn shop spend money obtain drink

JACK. [Rushing over to MISS PRISM.] Is this the handbag, Miss Prism? Examine it carefully before you speak. The happiness of more than one life depends on your answer.
MISS PRISM. [Calmly.] It seems to be mine. Yes, here is the injury it received through the upsetting of a Gower Street omnibus in younger and happier days. Here is the stain on the lining caused by the explosion of a temperance beverage, an incident that occurred at Leamington. And here, on the lock, are my initials. I had forgotten that in an extravagant mood I had had them placed there. The bag is undoubtedly mine. I am delighted to have it so unexpectedly restored to me. It has been a great inconvenience being without it all these years.
JACK. [In a pathetic voice.] Miss Prism, more is restored to you than this hand-bag. I was the baby you placed in it.
The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde.
Edit: If not for Margaret Rutherford (who played Miss Prism on screen) I would never have heard about "small beer" via her Miss Marple series. Small beer being a term for non alcoholic (temperance) beers. She was tea total.
