Back then I mostly played with no sound at all or sometimes with the simple PC beeper, and I even didn't know there was any music in the game! Thanks for sharing
As simple as the samples are, the Adlib (ESS) still has my vote here, I love the chunkiness of the synths, adds a LOT of impact when they're used like this.

Yeah I don't know anything about the hardware processing but the version you said seems to have plenty of reverb that ties the whole thing together and so it feels a more complete listening experience
Adlib/SoundBlaster - Basic but awesome. Balanced and easy on the ears. Soundscape Adlib emu - What the hell? Soundscape - Great, but lead instruments are a bit louder than they should be. AWE 32 - Great, but some instruments are a bit softer than they should be. GUS - is a mixed bag. What should be (I assume) a percussive xylophone not only sounds like a flute but is also in the wrong key. Dreamblaster X2GS - The best. balanced and has great samples. I'm not a fan of the electric guitar in of the GUS in E1M1. One could improve it by using a different version of the driver since it uses different samples, but I'm not sure if the percussive xylophone would improve.

right I couldn't afford a sound card. Played this and that Indy Car sim game with the BEEPS
I love hearing the opening notes in different soundcards.
Such a soothing vibe, it is.
Doom and its music are inseparable. Without the music, you don't have Doom.

I love the gnarly FM Adlib sounds!
2.1 Soundscape slapps. Thanks for the nostalgia
A big reason for this is probably that ENSONIQ was primarily a keyboard/synthesizer company. I agree, it sounds great.
I thought the same, really great quality

That Seinfeld bass on the Ensoniq rules.
Thank you for this.
The adlib emulation makes me laugh, I think it's hilarious! :D
4:14 that's the sound card the crappy PC at school had when I played it until late 2004. Good memories!! Edit: I screwed up, meant to say 4:14
Dreamblaster has the best balance imo and the muted parts sound the most natural.

Fart Fart FArt Fart
adlib sounds horrible.. unfortunately that's how most people heard it in the 90s, if at all!
