Japan has sort of abandoned their edge on certain tech (such as consumer electronics and maybe high-speed rail, too) to other countries and moving on to more profound developments, such as aerospace and automation. China has probably not edged them there yet. BTW, when it comes to newer tech countries, I'd probably go for Israel.

As well as gadgets. Amazon too sell many highly rated Chinese products for a great price that lasts. You will be surprised how many high quality, high performance products there is in China.
