    I'd take the Tokai, both on looks and sounds. I like a brighter Strat. And I was listening while working on the computer and all of a sudden I thought "that sounds great!" and looked up to see the Tokai.

    Interesting to hear the comparison from you Dave . I own a '84 Goldstar that I've played for 25 years and a mexi classic player that I've had for 5 or 6 years. It's the neck on the Tokai that makes it my go to guitar. Conversely , I preferred the sound that you got from the fender . It doesn't sound as 'muddy' as the one I own .

    Hi Dave, have to say that both strats sound awesome, but my choice would be the Tokai, as it seemed more musical to my ear anyway. But both are great, lived the sound of the Tex Mex pups. Great playing as always, keep on inspiring mate, well done

  • @joejitsumusic

    loved both. the tokai seemed to have some sort of edge on a clarity thing but i'd play either. it would definitely come down to feel for me and I'd probably end up with the white because I love me a white strat :) btw.. awesome sounding DI on that MG. Im just dying to get my hands on an MG100HDFX

    Hi Dave, you play the Fender slightly differently to the Tokai, with more emotion, so it lends a better tone to those Tex-Mex pups. I do love the look of the Tokai, it's gorgeous; but that Fender is something else. :-)

    I swapped the zinc block on my Japanese strat to steel and the difference was night and day. The extra brightness was good on the neck pickup but the middle was almost ear piercingly bright. I've gottan used to it now though !

  • @TheEricsnet1

    I do a lot of recording so a guitar that "cuts" through the mix will always get my attention and the Tokai nails it. The DI doesn't lie. Lol

    Hey Dave I remembered reading years ago when Nile Rodgers had Stevie Ray Vaughn come in the studio when he was working on the " let's dance album "he wanted him to use the tokai Strat. I also read that Nile was a big fan of those guitars. I had a Fernandez 63 reissue Strat pre-lawsuit with the fender headstock. I had it refretted and put Seymour Duncan vintage pickups in it. That was my main gitar for several years .I wish I still had it. I love your videos they're filled with so much passion and great playing.

    I have a Tokai version of a '62 strat made in '85 or '86. I did a concert a while back with a friend who plays a Fender strat (among other things), but he was playing bass in this setting; we switched off so he could play "Little Wing," and he described the sound as "really bright!"

  • @hybridnoisebloom
    @hybridnoisebloom 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been gassing for months for a Classic Series 60s Strat like your #1. But honestly now you're selling me on a Tokai, because the specs are so close to 60s vintage. I really want a Strat similar to Jimi's white Strat he got from Linda Keith (that she took from Keith Richards), or the Strat he acquired right around the time the Linda Strat was stolen--the sunburst Strat he played in Mar-May 1967. I think this period is my favorite period of Jimi's tonewise. The Tokai seems to nail it. The only remaining question is whether the pickups are period correct. Anyway, great video. Have a great day, Dave!

  • @400_billion_suns
    @400_billion_suns 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    They both sound great, but your white strat has that extra something special (honestly I think it's one of the best-sounding strats I've ever heard). The Fender has more bass and smoother treble (great clarity without harshness), and just sounds fatter and fuller overall. For me the Tokai tone is an A- and your white strat is an A+++.

  • @achill3usoverclocking874

    Over the years I have learnt to take whatever a guitar can give me and love it for what it is. Some give more than others but all give something that is distinct and unique to them and I never place one above another but focus on what it gives me that the others can't. I am not a great player - Dave would explore the boundaries of my guitars much more fully than I ever can. That these two guitars have found their master musician to push their limits is their particular karma at work. Mine had to make do with finding me :).

    I've done a bunch of tests with my mexican and fender custom shop strats and I feel that the difference in your guitars is more the wood / finish how theyre built aside from the pickups and hardware. Because they sound really close the Tokai is a little brighter. I have a Mexican strat that has a big bottom end on it kind of like a G&L that kept that sound no matter what pickups and bridge I put in it. I can strum my guitars side by side unplugged and hear the different base tones.

    I prefer the Fender. The Tokai electrics are shriller, like a lot of japanese products. I had a Goldstar ST50 and the tone controls were always on about 4 or 5, whereas on a Fender I use the tone controls from about 5 through to 10. I did not get on with the poly´ neck finish of the Tokai, sweat and it was uncomfortably sticky for me. Don´t know about the blocks - people say the sustain is better with a steel block, but I did not really hear a big difference.

The only Fender strat I have played is a Mexican and that's probably not a fair comparison. But the sound of your guitars -- the white strat is, as someone else said, fuller. The Tokai is brighter. Like you said, they both have their points. I have to say that my Tokai sounds fuller than what I heard from yours. I don't know if that's the amp or the settings or what.

    To my ears, the Tokai pickups have a lower impedance and better note clarity. And, somehow the Tokai sounded more articulate. I wonder if that was you being less familiar with the neck, and having to 'focus up' more to play the riff.
    Personally, I prefer the Tokai, but it really just comes down to personal preference and situational application. Cheers.

  • @antmax
    @antmax 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The fender sounds like hotter more full bodied with slightly more volume. I assume the Tex Mex are more modern higher output pickups. The Tokai sounded a bit thinner and brighter which is probably more vintage. I know that the 50's Classic vibe vs the 60's has the same kind of difference in tone between the two eras they are trying to replicate.
    I noticed the steel block thing too, I recently made a new partscaster out of spare parts using old squier tremolo. In my case I wasn't sure because the guitar with the steel trem also had a roasted maple neck and stainless steel frets which all are supposed to add a bit more brightness.

    I prefer Dave Simpson on any guitar. You make my evening. ;-)
    Today I played outdoors in a garden here 48°13'34.6"N 16°22'26.0"E
    for a very thankful audience. Lots of blues and some Sixtu Rodriguez and some Amy Winehouse stuff, people were very charmed. I hope I can pass some of the good vibes on.

      Check his "how i setup my guitars" video. He does not have exact measurements but you get the idea.

    yeah dave man, toki a little thinner but not thin , sounded nice , the fender a little fuller , both are nice ,they both should do the same job.i have 2 am, standards 97 and 2008 the main differance is neck profile , just a hair wider in the shoulders on the 08 model both have dlta tone pickups ,in my opinion are the best ,the later fat 50s were too fat ,not as stratty .ive played dozens of fender strats old and new ,late 90s up to bout 2008 sound and play best .not much of a fan of thenewer pro, models dont need or want push pull, they are good but jacked the price for a unwanted switching ,and my american standards do feel and sound a little better ,dont know why they just do .i think jimmi H. would have played am, standards .Or maybe added a floyed?

    Monkey metal is indeed a crap type of cast material. I’m sure some people would believe it a genre of music.
