I am an American. I started coming to Thailand in 2006. Met my spouse here in 2012. Got married in 2016. We lived in Bangkok exclusively for 7 years. Now, this year, we decided to live 50% in Thailand and 50% in Ohio. We love both, for very different reasons. So alternating 2 to 2.5 months in Thailand, then 2 to 2.5 months in Ohio, then repeat, repeat, etc. That's our plan. So far we are loving it. We own a home in Ohio, and a condo in Bangkok, and a condo on the beach in Jomtien. So Happy! 😊🎉

Just moved to Bangkok two weeks ago by myself, 24 yo from Portugal working online and I must say that I really really like it here. What you said about the values is so true, I never feel the need to show off anything here, literally renewed by wardrobe with unexpensive clothes and now I value connections with people much more. I cant even imagine what my life is gonna look like 1 year from now.

You nailed it man. Everyone likes to dump on America, but it still has so many benefits. I grew up dirt poor and my wife is a cuban immigrant. She came at 11 while not speaking a word of english. We both grinded the system and are now doctors in our 30s. We finally paid off student loans and are making around 700 to 800k annually. Everything you said is spot on. I want to use America as a vehicle to generate wealth for the next 10 years and then move to SE Asia to enjoy a healthier and more communial lifestyle. I stayed in thailand for a month in 2020 and going back this year for another month. That whole region just brings me peace. Keep posting dude your videos give me hope that there is more to life than just materials and individualism.

I came to Asia 45 years ago when Asia was very different compared today!! If you were raised or born in the west compared to the rest of the world you were the lucky 20% financially. The idea that Thai people have this life style of สบายๆ , is only partially true, there are many Thai people who are stressed out, as life in Thailand is expensive for the average Thai !!! The rate of suicide in Thailand is high. If you ask many Thai people in Thai how are you, they will answer ไม่สบาย, when you ask what's wrong jokingly they will say no money and giggle, though behind that giggle there is a lot of worry and stress. Before and just after WW 2 most families lived a collective life style in the west 2 to 3 generations in one house. Come the late 50 to early 60 the economy was very strong and was a major cause of people having independence . Your average Thai person can't afford to live by themselves, life in Thailand for your average Thai is a struggle. Also in Thai society if you don't conform to societies values you will have a very hard time to fit in and be excepted. Many foreigners think the Thai people have this simple life styles but the rules and cultural values are very restricting on how you speak, behave, belief systems such as "face and greng jai " are used to control people.

Hey Paul- It's so true that Americans are likely to say something politically correct out of fear of being canceled. I find it very frustrating when I try to get a real answer that deviates from American ideologies. When I express an opinion different from theirs, they often take it very personally and feel entitled to righteousness.
    Great video!

It was very enjoyable to watch your video, especially because you are so candid about your privilege with an American passport and the ability to spend much more in Thailand with dollars. I believe that the greed for earning more money is more ingrained in the American or European systems. Despite this, in less affluent countries like Thailand, there is also a strong desire for prosperity and better livelihood security.

Many get too busy with their nose to the grindstone thinking someday I will be retired & travel etc etc. Sadly when older many can no longer travel. Also living in Thailand yes many pluses & I have to say it is a developing country & while USA is great for all the reasons you mentioned it feels like it is declining rather than developing any further. If I may be so blunt the majority of Americans live from a split mind and separation. Unification is missing. Mistrust, and a large part of folks holding each other suspect with little to no regard for harmony and yes Americans are spoiled myself included. In my thought system I think every American that relocates to Thailand needs to take $13000 right off the top of whatever money being brought into their country and use it to put a Thai child through school. This relocating without service to Thailand in some manner simply escapes me. It’s not our country. We are guests and going there to live more cheaply, seek women, and imbibe in any substances alcohol or not is not something the Thai culture needs. I am not saying everyone goes with either poor intent or me, me, me attitude, yet a lot do. I am thousands of miles away grateful to someday be able to kiss the ground Thailand is planted/rooted on and be of service to the culture. It’s insane these gracious people are working the hours they are for the little compensation they get when somehow a lot of Americans have more. And I am aware a lot of Americans at present aren’t feeling the love in the states yet for any to simply relocate and not contribute in some manner doesn’t sit right in my soul. I hope you are treating your girlfriend like the queen she is -it seems so. We can contribute so much to the culture for anyone moving there 🙏🏻

Hey Paul. Saw you on CNBC's Make It and checked out your vids and I have to say that, man, a lot of this just feels tone-deaf.
So like, maybe it's just me, but doesn't it feel nauseating to be sitting across from your partner talking about this amazing life you live for $2k a month, comparing that to the 10k+ a month it probably cost you to live in NYC, as she's sitting there telling you about how she works from 7 AM - 10 PM for $41 dollars a day? And in the same breath you have the gal to talk about how the simplicities of life are all you need while she eats a pizza worth 5 hours of her daily salary? Something tells me if you were to ask her if she wanted to work 15 hours a day for $40 in Bangkok or work 8 hours in America for 5 times the pay, she'd probably start packing her bags. I imagine many Thai people would.
Paul, is it possible these joys and simplicities in life aren't inherent to Thailand? Maybe Thailand is amazing because of Geographical Arbitrage? I've gotta say, I've watched a few of your more recent videos and it honestly feels like you're fearmongering. You paint the US as this huge rat race where everyone is out to get one another, all we do is argue about political party lines, and cities are filled with crime and hate. But there are tons of communities where people help one another, people smile as they pass by, and people are just generally kind. I get NYC can be hectic but I live over here in Austin, Texas and I have a group of friends who always have my back, I can knock on my neighbors door at 2 AM and they wouldn't hesitate to answer, and life is generally great except for one major thing I'll mention soon.
I think what makes Thailand (or Colombia, or Bali, or Vietnam, or wherever expats congregate) so amazing is that you're able to live a simple life of playing with your dog, going to the gym, eating amazing meals for breakfast lunch and dinner but most importantly not having to WORK because of the cheap cost of living. Your situation is different since you were like a millionaire, but the vast majority of the people watching your channel hate WORK and the stress that comes with it. They hate the idea of working all day every day and retiring at 65+ juuuust in time for cancer to rear its ugly head. If you asked me if I wanted to live a life where all of my needs are met and I had to choose between an American city of my choice or Bangkok I'd choose America every time. Believe me, I've watched countless hours of Bangkok cost of living videos, vlogs, etc. Thailand is an amazing, beautiful country that opens up a lot of opportunities for people born in the West. But none of it would be possible without the millions of people working 16 hour days, day after day, year after year, for a mere fraction of what we make.

You don't need to be afraid of being canceled for stating your mind, especially if you are coming from a place of empathy. Those who complain about cancellation are those ones who want to say really horrible things about minorities or marginalized communites. Remember when you had the interviewed the ladyboy, and those rabid conservatives were foaming at the mouth posting the most bigoted comments with anonymity. They just want to be able to say those thing in person without consequences. They deserve to be called out.

Less stress also equals 🟰 Longer life. You probably extended not only the quality but also the quantity(lifespan)by at least 7 to 14 years by choosing Thailand over Manhattan. 👌
