The cardboard hexes are actually about half the thickness of the acrylic hexes, but the cardboard hexes have text explaining what the tile does on the back. The graphics are also sharper on the cardboard hexes.
I love that everything can fit in the single box (even all the acrylics) if you get rid of the cardboard. The only thing that doesn't fit is the 3D terrain from the higher pledge level. Those go in their own thin box.
Yeah I was worried a bit, but it works perfectly. Initially in the crowdfunding they said they would not send the cardboard tokens for those opting for acrylic, but i was happy they sent it anyway, it is nice to have an option. I put all cardboard tokens in the acrylic boxes, and now like you said everything fits in the main box, except for the 3d terrain but it is fine.
Regarding the tiles rules recap on the back of the cardboard tiles, Awaken Realm released recently a pdf with stickers that one can print and stick to the back of the tiles.
Castles of Burgundy special edition vs retail 30$ game + any other 100$ games, is simple to choose. Two games always brings you better replayability, different experience and options. If you are having the playmate, sundrops and acrylic tiles, this goes for a price of 5 other (70ish games) or 3 100$ games. But if you want a game that you would show your friends how expensive it is this is it. My recommendation is, get the 30$ version and buy yourself a small collection of games that you would have different experience.

Does anyone know if the box will fit in a Kalax shelf? It doesn't look like it will.
If you lay it down yes
