St Ives suffered from the same thing that happened in many pretty places in the UK. Rich people from London and other cities bought property to have holidays in, and rent out. This caused a lack of affordable and available housing for people growing up in those areas. Some areas have tried to put restrictions on outsiders buying in if they are not planning to live full time. It's sort of understandable. We would all like a nice place to live, but if your money comes from being a complete "banker" in the city, what do you do?

I have to say that St Ives is maybe one of my favourite places on the English mainland. I spent a week there in a bed and breakfast place high up on the hill that overlooked the surfing beach (that's Porthmeor beach). BUT, if you liked the look of the sea and the beaches there then you have to look at the Scilly Isles at some time, well worth the ferry from Penzance or the short flight out that goes from a couple of places

The cornwall housing crisis is a situation where a lot of people from outside Cornwall are buying up homes and turning them into holiday homes they rent out to holiday makers at a premium rate. This is happening on a huge scale which leaves local people literally unable to find a home in the area. Young people from the area are particularly finding it very difficult to get on the property ladder as all the affordable homes are now holiday lets.

It is all part of the societal move as part of the 15 minute cities, they are not only cutting cities in major areas up into 15 minute cities, they will soon start removing people from out of the 0
It is intended to re-wild areas, in fact huge swathes of land so that normal people can’t and don’t live there. That is part to 15 minutes city system

Where I lived some landowners were given permission to develope tiny stone terraces that fit into the local architectural vernacular. Almost impossible to get in a National Park. The proviso was they could only rent to locals with priority given certain professions. Rural workers were to be given top priority, teachers and there was another category but I cannot remember it. The rent was also controlled and affordable. I know management costs were covered by a charity. I know My friend was lucky to get one as she did not strictly fall into the category when she was investigated as she had already retired 4 weeks prior. If there is a will there is a way. Only if you vote in people who will do it.

Your appreciation for the UK has actually made quite a number of Brits sit up and take notice of our country! We become so used to it that we have a jaded view of things. It takes other nationalities to bring home to us how beautiful and varied the UK is and how grateful we should be. I don't live in UK anymore, but my heart will always be there, especially in the North.

My family are Cornish and I spent almost every childhood summer in some part of Cornwall. It's a shame that none of them can afford to buy homes in the area due to the housing crisis, but it's still a beautiful part of the country.

Few people out there know how incredibly varied the landscape of Britain is. It has practically everything. Nice sandy beaches, rocky coasts, big cities, quaint villages, rolling green fields, forests, wild moorland, flatlands, mountains, highlands, beautiful islands. And that's just the land. Added to that is the long history, the varied cultures across different areas of England, Scotland and Wales, the huge variety of accents and even the languages. In such a small country it's pretty amazing.

@Barry Steven I can vouch for that. I know you meant all of the Island, but I was especially struck by the radically different scenery and how quickly it can change in the West Country. I’ve only been to Cornwall once, but I took the bus from Victoria Station to Penzance at the Western tip, incredible. Just the variety of scenery you encounter traveling across Cornwall from the time you cross the Tamar into the Duchy till you get to the other end is phenomenal. I’ll never forget looking through the windows as we drove into Bodmin Moor on a sunny late afternoon. The bleak barren landscape looked like parts of the Western US. I mean if the Brits ever decided to make a Western in their country, I think Bodmin Moor would fit the bill. Then on to so many beautiful villages with cottages built of that amazing Cornish stone. Brilliant yellow Gorse bushes blooming in the sun, just amazing. And passing seaside towns with stunning bays and coves and mountains descending to the beaches. Words fail me trying to describe the beautiful, mystical charm of Cornwall. You’ll have to go and see it yourself N & D.

So in places like Cornwall, Devon, the cotswolds and the Lake District, the houses used to be cheap and we’re bought out as second homes or holiday lets, which has driven prices up exponentially, while local incomes are really low. Cornwall is actually one of the most deprived areas of the country, with huge numbers of people either unemployed, on very low incomes or seasonal work, while the property prices are some of the highest in the UK. I was raised in the Jurassic coast in East Devon and we have the same issue. I could never afford to live there! The South Hams in south Devon is somewhere where every other house is well over a million but local people don’t earn that sort of income.

Even in summer, however, it's relatively peaceful in the early hours of the morning when all the "emmets" are yet to arrive. Great to wander around as the shops and restaurants get ready to open.
The guy that did the previous video was obviously just filming his vacation. He didn't come far enough west to the Penwith Peninsula. St Ives is close to Lands End. A further 20 miles west across the sea are the Isles of Scilly, which are even more tropical. Worth a reaction.

Returned there in recent years with my half Catalan children, used to overseas holidays and Mediterranean islands and fell in love all over again. The reason for the wind is partly that we’re an island so all of our beaches are coastal rather than on any lakes as some are in the US, but also because we’re further north than the US - Cornwall is parallel with northern Newfoundland in Canada - it’s easy to forgot how northerly the UK is. And the further north (or south) you get from the equator the stronger the winds get

    • @hmv6666

Cornwall (or Kernow) also gets the full force of the Atlantic winds. There's a dramatic transition much further east near Weymouth - climb Chesil beach and you'll feel the difference. There's a reason why St Ives points east.

Tourists go to London and not St. Ives because of the journey time. Heathrow to London is 30 minutes on the train, Heathrow to St.Ives is 6 hours on the train or 5 hours in the car.
2nd/holiday homes are a massive issue for the Southwest, out of season coastal towns have a fraction of the people there, no employment or industry and house prices that the locals cannot afford. In the summer though, the tourists bring in the economy - it's love/hate.
St. Ives is amazing though, the north Cornish coast is mind-blowing. You should check out South Devon next, it's worth a visit on the way down.

Another few places within this part of England would be The Scilly Isles (pronounced silly) which are an Archipelago of islands just off the Cornish Coast. Ferries from Penzance (2hrs 45mins) or flights on a helicopter or little Sky bus from Lands End, Penzance, Newquay or Exeter will take you across in a shorter time (between 20 mins to an hour). It was fun to see Debbie's face light up when she saw the ice cream van and then the shop. So glad you can see beyond the lure of London which has it's merits but I know where I would rather be and see and I live in the UK! All the beautiful views look different when it's raining, stormy and cold. St Ives is loverly but you wont find many local Cornish living there, the housing is very expensive in large parts of the county because of outsiders buying everything up so locals find it hard to afford a home. Lots of very famous and rich people live there, and of course, a large part of Cornwall is owned by the Prince of Wales/Duke of Cornwall Prince William and managed by his Duchy of Cornwall. I also warn you that the Cornish are a VERY! independent people and still consider themselves to be an independent Kingdom like they used to be and are NOT!!! English!!! 😊

St Ives is very seasonal. A lot of people work on zero hour contracts in the town because the companies can't guarantee hours during the quiet months. They get busy during school holidays, its also a popular honeymoon destination so they get semi decent traffic between April and September. Outside of the pandemic they do well around Christmas and new year as there's a big fancy dress thing that goes on on new years, the town gets closed off to traffic and is just full of people dressed up. They then do a firework display off of the pier. There are videos on TH-cam showing it. People come from all over the world for it.

Here in the UK there is 5000 miles of coastline believe it or not. And there are some absolutely fantastic beaches. In the north west of Scotland, the sea is crystal clear, and in mid summer it doesnt go dark until 11pm. One of my best memories is swimming in the sea in Dumfries and Galloway, during June 1988, I was 11, and the se was so warm at 10pm. 😊😊

Measuring the coastline of a country is one of the pursuits that led to the discovery of fractals; essentially, if you include everything down to grains of sand and mud, the coastline is always infinite.
If we draw straight lines where there are none, or follow the three-mile limit of the 'official' border as on some atlases, or just the smooth sea-defined edge of land uncovered at low-low tide, we get different figures.

It sounds odd, but the quality of the light is exceptional over there. Something which, no doubt, helps to attract painters and sculptors. If you wanted more Cornwall content, might I suggest Tintagel. It's one of my favourite places ever to visit in Cornwall. They have tons of little shops with souvenirs and knick-knacks and gems. They also have huge cornish pasties in one of the shops, and you can see them being made! Besides the village itself, you can get tickets to see Tintagel castle, which is where King Arthur is said to have been conceived and born. There's also a little beach and Merlin's cave down towards the castle, which is where Merlin supposedly lived.

Wind-breakers are more of a custom and not necessarily needed against wind. They're often used as a privacy thing, so the people sitting next you can't see everything you're doing and it also just gives you a little house feel on the big open beach. You can bunch personal items right up next to it and it might make you feel that they're safer and less likely to be stolen. The wind-breaking effect, such as it is, more often than not is used to prevent sand blowing into your picnic food.

The whole of the South-West coastline of England is gorgeous - and it continues to be so all the way up to the southern-most coastline of Wales. There's a reason why we have a whole stretch of the South coast nicknamed the "English Riviera" ... there are even palm trees growing along the front and within the little towns and villages! Gives off a _very_ Caribbean vibe, as you said! It's a bit farther East along the coast, between Dartmouth and Exmouth - so that's another area I would strongly encourage you to visit!

    • @oceansunset6147
      @oceansunset6147 ปีที่แล้ว

Regarding the coastline yes English Riviera is a good name but the quality of life is pretty shocking really and some places look pretty grim! Most locals are struggling and quite a few places are very run down due to lack of jobs and the rich people from the city buying up all the property … it’s shocking really that the councils have allowed this to happen. Now with the catering Industry and hospitality suffering the atmosphere is slowly changing. All these rich people who have homes down there need to spend some of their money on maintaining the external appearance of the towns in the south west because the locals can’t afford it. This whole part of the country needs a spruce up; houses need painting, gardens need looking after, homelessness needs to be resolved, take away food and restaurant food needs to improve and be more healthy and appealing. Instead of continuing building the HS2 train (which really only will benefit commerce and corporations coming out of London) our old train connections need to be rebuilt to reduce traffic …. car bans need to be set in place in parts of the South West in conjunction with this. How do all these people in high positions get their jobs? The mentality of the rich is to only think about themselves! They need to be investing into areas where they have destroyed local people’s lives.

The tidal range around the Cornish coast runs between 15 to 30 feet, which means that most harbours are completely dry at low tide, and the boats are left to rest on their keels. In the Bristol Channel and the Severn Estuary, tidal ranges can run as high 40 feet or more. Tidal ranges on much of the US coastline are significantly smaller than this.

I live about 15 miles from St Ives, and was born in Cornwall. Pretty much all of our prettiest places have become very touristy, however, still worth a visit. I would also recommend, Falmouth for independent shops, Tintagel, and The Lizard (the most southerly point in England) for spectacular sea views and cliffs. You can also get to see the Cornish Chough, which is a bird that re-introduced itself fairly recently, a black bird from the crow family, with pure black feathers, red legs and bright red bill. Hello from St Ives, It's lovely to see you guys react to the town.
This video does show St Ives at its best, and I can guarantee it is a lovey and welcoming town to visit if you're ever aiming towards Cornwall.
Couple of top tips tho: If driving to the town, NEVER aim to park in the island car park, there will not be a space as everyone's sat-nav will have told them to go there I've lost count of the number of times I've had to start yelling and directing traffic, to get it moving again in the small windy roads at the island. The rugby field or up by the leisure centre will have space, and don't need you to slowly work your way thorough town to get to them.
Second, we have some of the best beaches in the world at our doorstep, and they get packed fast, but we also are surrounded by even more miles of empty golden sands and quiet retreats, if you think the town is busy, a half hour to an hour-long walk will reward you with miles of secluded beaches and a little adventure.
Three, the housing crisis, is. brutal. Please understand if you complain about parking or how much you have paid to stay in town or make a complaint to someone working there, most have had to travel miles into St Ives (public transport is great for day trippers, not commuters.) to then work a minimum wage job, and as a group we have developed a rather brash/mean sense of humour. We want people to enjoy the town and are keen to gossip and give advice, but will rarely suffer fools gladly.
That being said, if you're ever in town. Dydh da my love.

3 miles of beautiful golden sand, the same beautiful stretch of sea, but what Hayle has are these amazing dunes, but also, when the tide goes out, it leaves these awesome pools, which when heated by the sun, you can just lie in, read a book....Bliss!
BTW Lovely Ladies, you shouldn't be too surprised how beautiful the British coastline is, after all, we are an island, with some of the best beaches you'll find anywhere in the world!
Keep up your lovely posts Ladies!

In 2012, I moved down to this area of the UK for my job, which is driving trains. One of the routes I drive is down to Penzance, which means going through a place called Hayle. From Hayle station you can see right down the river mouth, and across the bay to St. Ives.
In fact, I saw it this morning 😀

Cornwall is my second home. Iv been visiting since the 70's. St. Ives is beautiful but packed with people. My dog loves the beaches and literally disappears into a speck on St Ives beach. The food is yummy fresh seafood and most pubs and restaurants welcome dogs so its a perfect holiday for all the family.

St Ives is a lovely place with a really charming feel. Unfortunately, during peak season it is crawling with "emmets" (Tourists, from the old word for ants) the same as many of the larger towns in Cornwall. However, there is a definite surfeit of lovely places in Cornwall so it isn't too difficult to find somewhere quieter even during the busiest times.

Thank you for a truly inspiring look at St Ives. From the stone structures and walls to the crystal clear waters, this is stunningly beautiful. Love the little boutique shops. My kind of shopping. Thank you so much ladies 🤘❤️🇦🇺😁

Great video. I've heard people say avoid going during school holidays. You guys are going to have to come to the UK for a year to visit all the places you love.

@The Natasha & Debbie Show I'd love to see you react to Plymouth, my home, its where the pilgrims left to sail to the new world (america) we have the Plymouth marine aquarium, with the world's largest seahorse breading program, we have the lighthouse "Smeatons tower" this was where what we all recognise as the typical lighthouse was invented. And if you get bored of the coast, we have dartmoor, beautiful Moore land, with amazing walks.
Love your content, keep up the great work.

I live in Exeter. It's not that far from St. Ives. I've been there, it's beautiful. Believe it or not the night life is good there too. I wanna go to some US beaches.. :)

Whenever I go to Cornwall I love visiting Looe and Polperro, both lovely villages, the views from the rail journey from Liskeard to Looe are spectacular
